You can run an Indian music channel as a continuous YouTube livestream with an encoder: first clear the rights for the exact recordings and compositions you plan to use, then enable live streaming, connect an encoder to a YouTube broadcast, test it, and arrange monitoring and recovery. YouTube does not provide a single setting that guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, and a successful test does not establish that you have music rights.
Plan the channel before you go live
Decide what the channel will play, where viewers may watch, and whether the live programme will be saved as an archive. Those decisions affect both production and rights clearance. For a bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani, Hindi-music, or other Indian music channel, do not assume that owning a copy of a track—or having permission for one kind of public performance—also permits a continuous YouTube stream.
Define the programme and its scope
- List the recordings you intend to play, including versions, remixes, live recordings, and any music embedded in video.
- Decide whether the broadcast will be archived and whether it will be monetized. Ask for permission covering those uses rather than relying on an informal understanding.
- Specify the territories where the channel is intended to be available. Permissions and rights-holder arrangements may differ by catalogue and territory.
- Choose a format: a manually operated broadcast from an encoder, or a continuous prerecorded programme assembled from files and playlists. Keep the format consistent with the permissions you obtain.
Choose an operating model
A software encoder runs on a computer; a dedicated hardware encoder is another possible path. YouTube for Artists describes encoders as a way to gain customization and control, and YouTube’s materials also discuss hardware encoders. The available sources do not establish a required model or benchmark one against another. Choose based on the operator’s familiarity, the production controls needed, and who will maintain and restart the system.
A live streaming encoder is an equipment category to consider, not a mandatory purchase. Before buying hardware, confirm it suits your video and audio workflow and that you have someone who can operate it. A managed cloud playout service is a different continuity option; assess its actual YouTube workflow, monitoring, recovery, availability in India, and rights-handling arrangements rather than assuming these are included.

Clear music rights for the actual YouTube use
Rights clearance is a separate workstream from connecting the encoder. India’s Copyright Act defines communication to the public broadly, including making a work or performance available by diffusion at times chosen individually. Government copyright guidance describes copyright in musical works and sound recordings, including rights such as reproduction and communication to the public. IPRS explains that a song may involve both a sound recording and underlying musical and literary works, and that its licensing applies to works under its control.
Clear the recording and the underlying works
For every selected track, identify the relevant rights holders for both the particular sound recording and the underlying composition and lyrics. Ask the label, distributor, publisher, collecting society, or other rights holder what it controls and whether it can authorize the planned online use. A licence from one party or for one right does not automatically settle the others.
PPL India states that its PPL licence does not cover non-physical or digital use. That does not establish who can license every online right or what permission a particular stream requires. Do not treat a collecting-society or public-performance licence as blanket permission for YouTube, every track, every territory, an archive, or monetization.

Get the permission and allowlisting details in writing
Ask rights holders to confirm in writing the catalogue or tracks covered, YouTube live-stream use, the territories, the permission term, whether an archive is allowed, whether monetization is allowed, and any conditions that apply. If the owner uses Content ID, ask whether it must add your channel to its allowlist and confirm that the correct channel has been added before launch. YouTube for Artists advises music channels to coordinate with the label or distributor when using protected music.

Enable live streaming and create the broadcast
1. Enable the channel in advance
Use the current live-streaming flow in YouTube Studio to enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube for Artists advises verifying the account at least 24 hours before the planned first stream. Do this well ahead of launch, not on the day you announce the channel. The precise Studio screens and labels can change, so follow the current prompts rather than relying on an old screenshot or tutorial.

2. Create a broadcast and connect an encoder
YouTube’s live documentation treats a broadcast and a stream as separate resources: the broadcast is the event, while the stream carries the audio-video data. Create the planned event in YouTube Studio, then use the stream details shown there to connect your encoder. Follow the current YouTube and encoder instructions for the selected setup; the available sources do not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or encoder configuration for every channel and network.
Keep the stream key private. Enter it only in the intended encoder or service, do not publish it in a description or share it with people who do not need access, and replace it through YouTube’s current controls if it is exposed. Check that the encoder is connected to the intended channel and event before starting the programme.

YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test before a high-investment stream. For a continuous music channel, use the rehearsal to check the whole operating process, not only whether the encoder connects:

- Confirm the intended audio and video are present and at an acceptable level.
- Check the event and stream status in YouTube Studio and verify that the programme is reaching the intended broadcast.
- Confirm that the rights-holder permissions and any required Content ID allowlisting cover the selected tracks and channel.
- Practise what the operator will do if the encoder, computer, power, or internet connection fails, and who will notice and respond if the stream stops.
This rehearsal is practical operating advice, not proof that every track is cleared or that a public broadcast will remain uninterrupted.

A continuous stream is an operational commitment. The official material cited here does not guarantee an indefinite YouTube broadcast or prescribe an end-to-end design for 24/7 playlists, redundancy, power, networking, or restart coverage. Decide who monitors the channel, how they will detect a stopped or degraded stream, and who can restore it. If you operate your own equipment, plan for the computer or encoder, power, network, and playlist process to need attention.
Make the restart plan specific: identify the person on duty, the equipment or service they can access, how they will confirm the correct event and stream are active, and how they will handle an interruption during a track. Keep a record of incidents and changes to the playlist so that an operational fix does not accidentally introduce uncleared music.

Understand YouTube’s music checks and possible interruptions
YouTube Help says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube detects third-party content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image; if the content remains, the live stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A licence does not necessarily prevent that interruption: YouTube says licensed content can still trigger one when the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist.
If a completed live stream is archived, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the live stream completes. A live match warning or interruption, a claim on an archive, a copyright strike, and a contractual rights issue are distinct matters. Do not try to evade Content ID, and do not infer from a clean rehearsal that your catalogue is cleared.
Choose between self-managed and cloud playout

These are operating choices, not substitutes for rights clearance. Compare the exact controls and responsibilities you need; do not assume any provider will secure rights or resolve Content ID issues for your channel.

What a continuous channel can—and cannot—promise
YouTube for Artists reported that over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That is platform-wide context, not a forecast for an Indian music channel or a prediction of its audience. Build the channel around a rights-cleared catalogue and a realistic operating plan; treat uninterrupted availability as a goal supported by monitoring and recovery, not as a guarantee from a YouTube setting.
