You can run a 24/7 gaming video stream on YouTube without OBS, but the right setup depends on what you mean by “gaming video.” For live gameplay, another compatible encoder still needs a device that can run the game, capture it, and send the feed continuously. For prerecorded gameplay videos, a cloud service can send stored footage to YouTube without keeping a computer at home on.
In either case, YouTube needs a stream URL and key, a supported encoder and settings, and a source that can stay online. This guide covers both paths, YouTube’s recommended settings, testing, reliability, and what to plan for if you want a complete 24-hour archive.
Choose between live gameplay and prerecorded gaming video
These are different kinds of 24/7 stream. YouTube does not run a game for you: live gameplay must be rendered and captured by a device, then encoded and sent to YouTube. Prerecorded footage is already rendered; a compatible cloud service can send those files as a live stream.
| What you want to stream | What must keep running | What the setup does |
|---|---|---|
| Live gameplay | A device running the game, a compatible encoder, power, and an internet connection with enough upload capacity | Captures and encodes gameplay as it happens, then sends it to YouTube |
| Prerecorded gaming videos | A local encoder and connection, or a cloud service configured to send uploaded videos | Sends existing footage as a YouTube live stream; it does not capture new gameplay |
YouTube’s encoder directory includes software and hardware encoders, and lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for streaming prerecorded videos 24/7. That listing does not establish that Gyre captures live gameplay, nor does it mean YouTube operates or endorses third-party products. Check the encoder directory and the product’s current documentation for supported inputs and features before choosing a tool: YouTube’s encoder directory.

Check that your YouTube channel can livestream
Before configuring an encoder, confirm that your channel is eligible. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. You must be at least 16 years old to livestream. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and formats if you are unsure whether a restriction or format applies to your channel.
Set up a 24/7 live gameplay stream without OBS
For live gameplay, replacing OBS means choosing another compatible encoder—not eliminating the need to run and capture the game. YouTube describes encoders as useful for gameplay and overlays. Its directory includes software and hardware options; verify that your chosen encoder accepts your actual gameplay source and supports YouTube’s current ingestion requirements. A capture card alone is not an encoder, and YouTube does not run the game on your behalf.

- Choose the gameplay device and encoder. Decide where the game will run and how its video and audio will reach the encoder. Check the encoder maker’s current documentation for YouTube support, input compatibility, and whether the device is intended for continuous operation. YouTube’s encoder directory is a starting point, not a performance guarantee.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, go to Live Control Room, and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. Use the values for the stream you created. Treat the key like a password: someone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Keep it private and use YouTube’s stream-key management guidance if you need to manage or replace it.
- Set the protocol, video, audio, and bitrate. Start with the YouTube recommendations in the settings table below, then select values your encoder supports and your upload connection can sustain. Do not assume a setting is available merely because YouTube recommends it.
- Run a representative test. Send gameplay with realistic motion and audio, check the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health before relying on the setup. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload capacity above the total streaming bitrate; its streaming tips explain the bandwidth and testing guidance.
- Plan for continuous operation. The gameplay device, encoder, power, and network need to remain available. Backup power or internet may reduce the effect of a local outage, but these are practical resilience measures, not YouTube requirements or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
Use YouTube’s encoder settings as a starting point
The following are YouTube’s recommended live encoder settings, not a promise of image quality, compatibility with every encoder, or uninterrupted service. Bitrate recommendations below are for H.264. Use the current live encoder settings and your encoder’s documentation when configuring a specific device.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Ingestion protocol | RTMPS is recommended. YouTube’s listed protocols include RTMP and RTMPS. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 are listed. Confirm that the encoder and your chosen workflow support the same codec. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate). |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3. |
| 1080p60 video bitrate | 17 Mbps for H.264. |
| 1080p30 video bitrate | 14 Mbps for H.264. |
| 720p60 video bitrate | 8 Mbps for H.264. |
| 720p30 video bitrate | 8 Mbps for H.264. |
These bitrate figures are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not a measure of the connection’s total demand: include audio and any other streamed output when checking the total. YouTube’s rule is direct: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” It recommends about 20% additional upload capacity above the total stream bitrate. A connection that only just matches the configured bitrate leaves little room for normal variation.

Stream prerecorded gaming videos without leaving a PC on
If you already have gameplay recordings and do not need the stream to show new gameplay as it happens, you can use a service that sends stored video to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. Check Gyre’s current documentation for accepted inputs, playlist and looping behavior, recovery options, rights requirements, and price; the YouTube listing alone does not establish those details or suitability for live gameplay.
StreamNeo is another option for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not capture live gameplay from a console or PC. StreamNeo is #1 to consider for this prerecorded-video use case because it runs continuously from the cloud, accepts uploads at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.

Plan separately for a full-day archive
YouTube’s cited encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise one complete automatic archive for a 24-hour broadcast. If you need a full-day recording, plan a separate recording or archive workflow and verify its limits before streaming; do not assume the whole broadcast will be available as one VOD.
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
- The encoder will not connect: Check that the stream URL and key are the ones for the stream you created in Live Control Room, and confirm that the encoder’s protocol is supported by YouTube. If the key may have been exposed, manage or replace it using YouTube’s stream-key settings.
- The preview buffers or stream health reports trouble: Compare the total outgoing bitrate with available upload capacity. Reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the current settings, and leave YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% headroom. Test with representative gameplay and audio rather than a static scene.
- The stream looks choppy or settings are rejected: Confirm the encoder uses a supported codec, CBR, a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (never over 4 seconds), and a frame rate no higher than 60 fps. Match the selected resolution and bitrate to what the encoder can output and the connection can sustain.
- The feed stops during an overnight run: Identify which part failed—game device, encoder, power, local network, or YouTube ingest. Keep the source and encoder monitored, and consider backup power or internet as practical safeguards. YouTube’s guidance does not establish guaranteed 24/7 uptime for an encoder or connection.
- The full 24 hours are not available as one archive: The cited automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. Use a separate recording plan for a full-day VOD.
Keep game footage, music, and other rights in mind
Being able to send a video to YouTube does not establish that you have permission to broadcast its contents. Review the rights for gameplay, music, cutscenes, overlays, and any third-party material before scheduling a long stream. YouTube’s systems and policies may affect a live broadcast or its archive; do not treat a successful test as clearance to use content you do not have rights to stream. For prerecorded loops, also consider whether the channel’s content meets YouTube’s current rules for monetization and reused material; streaming continuously does not itself establish eligibility.
