You can run a 24/7 YouTube walkthrough stream with a computer encoder or, on supported modern consoles, the console’s built-in streaming function. For a continuous broadcast, plan the source, YouTube Live eligibility, encoder settings, rights, local recording, and monitoring before leaving it unattended. The most important archive caveat: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as your only copy.
Choose how to send gameplay to YouTube
Your route depends on where the game runs and how much control you need over the broadcast. YouTube supports computer-based encoder streaming and direct livestreaming from eligible modern consoles; it does not designate one route as best for every creator. Check the console maker’s instructions for the console-specific setup.

Optional equipment such as an external microphone, headphones, or capture card depends on your setup; YouTube identifies these as typical gaming-stream hardware, not universal requirements. See YouTube’s gaming livestream guidance.
Make sure your channel can go live
YouTube’s current general eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance before scheduling the walkthrough.

Set up YouTube Live and connect your encoder
- Open YouTube Studio. Create or schedule a live stream in the Live Control Room, following YouTube’s current setup flow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In the encoder’s stream or destination settings, enter the URL and key provided for that broadcast. The stream key acts like a password that lets the encoder send video to your YouTube channel.
- Keep the key private. Do not show it in a screenshot, overlay, recording, or public message. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Configure the video and audio output. Select an ingest protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio options supported by YouTube and your encoder. Match settings to your connection and walkthrough footage rather than choosing the highest available setting by default.
- Start with a private or unlisted test. Check the encoder connection and preview in the Live Control Room before making a scheduled or public broadcast continuous.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest. Its published encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Bitrate and audio recommendations vary with resolution, quality target, and ingest method, so use the current YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for your chosen output. Measure your available upload capacity and leave headroom; a bitrate that works on one connection or resolution is not universal.
Test the whole broadcast before leaving it running
A successful connection alone does not prove that a long walkthrough is watchable or being recorded correctly. Test representative gameplay motion and the audio that will actually run during the stream.

- Set up the encoder in advance and confirm the Live Control Room preview appears as expected.
- Listen for game sound, commentary, clipping, silence, and audio that is out of sync with the picture.
- Watch fast movement and scene changes for dropped frames, stutter, or unreadable detail.
- Open the stream from the channel or watch page and check it on a mobile device.
- If recording locally, confirm the archive file is being created and continues to grow.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and the encoder’s connection indicators during the test.
YouTube’s live-streaming operational tips recommend checking the preview, local archive, viewer access, and audio and video throughout a broadcast.
Plan for archives, recording, and recovery
For a continuous format, YouTube’s archive limit is a crucial distinction: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. If preserving the walkthrough matters, arrange local recording and enough storage before going live, and verify that the recording is actually growing. Do not assume that dividing a long broadcast into shorter events guarantees a complete archive; YouTube’s guidance does not establish that outcome. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

A 24/7 broadcast also needs someone or something to notice when the encoder, computer, network, or stream stops. For a self-hosted setup, decide who will check stream health and how they will restart it; test the recovery process rather than assuming a dropped connection will resume on its own.
Check game and music rights before streaming
YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines, and creators are responsible for having the rights needed for content they stream, including music. Game publishers’ livestream permissions can differ, and licensed music inside a game may have separate restrictions. Check the current policy from the publisher of the specific game and review the YouTube Terms of Service and YouTube live-streaming guidance before leaving a broadcast unattended. There is no blanket clearance here for every game or soundtrack.

Troubleshoot common continuous-stream problems
