How to Fix Audio Delay on a YouTube Radio Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify what is delayed: sound out of sync with the picture, the entire live program behind real time, or YouTube audio behind a separate radio feed. Each points to a different fix. There is no universal YouTube control that synchronizes a YouTube stream with an independently delivered radio broadcast.

Identify the kind of delay

  • Sound and picture do not match: A voice, instrument, or action appears before its sound, or vice versa. Check the playback device and the audio path through the TV, receiver, or soundbar.
  • The whole live program is behind the event: Picture and sound may match each other, but both arrive late. This is live broadcast delay, which can be affected by buffering and network conditions.
  • YouTube is behind another radio or audio source: The two services deliver audio independently. The official guidance covered here does not establish a general control for synchronizing them, so a TV lip-sync adjustment may not solve this mismatch.

A YouTube TV community reader described one symptom as “there is a slight delay between the audio and video signals. They are not in sync.” That wording describes a lip-sync problem; it does not mean every delayed YouTube radio stream has the same cause.

Isolate the device, stream, or playback route

  1. Replay the same stream on another supported device. If the problem occurs only on one device or audio route, focus on that setup. If it follows one stream across devices, report the stream and include your device and playback route. The one-stream-versus-many clue is a troubleshooting heuristic, not proof of the cause.
  2. Restart and update. YouTube recommends restarting the app or device, checking for app and system updates, and testing another supported device when playback remains abnormal. If the issue persists, send feedback after reproducing it. See YouTube playback troubleshooting.
  3. If casting, restart the casting path. Stop casting and restart the content, close and reopen the Chrome tab, and reduce the distance between the computer, router, and streaming device. Power-cycle the streaming device by disconnecting its power for about one minute; simply removing it from the TV’s HDMI port does not reboot it. See Google’s casting troubleshooting guidance.

Fix sound that is out of sync with the picture

Start with the audio equipment between the video source and your ears. Google’s guidance for Google TV Streamer says: “When delays are constant, you can try to adjust the audio delay settings on your TV, A/V receiver, or soundbar.” The control’s name and location vary by equipment, so use the manual for your TV, receiver, or soundbar rather than assuming another brand has the same menu.

  • Check the TV, A/V receiver, or soundbar’s audio delay or offset setting. Change it in small increments while replaying the same content.
  • Check that the audio output format is compatible with the connected equipment.
  • On Google TV Streamer, temporarily turn off Dialogue enhancement and Volume leveler, then test with surround sound disabled. These recommendations apply to that device’s troubleshooting guidance, not necessarily to other brands.
  • Reboot the streamer from its power source. If needed, reboot the router as well.

Google recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable for the specific Google TV Streamer connection arrangement described in its guide. That is a conditional setup recommendation, not a general cure for source-side latency, broadcast buffering, or an incorrect audio-offset setting.

Reduce live delay in YouTube TV when the whole broadcast is late

If you are watching in the YouTube TV app on a TV and the entire live program is behind real time, open the three-dot menu, select Broadcast Delay, then choose Decrease to reduce delay or Default to favor fewer interruptions. This setting is documented for YouTube TV’s TV app; do not assume it is available in every YouTube app or radio stream.

Lower delay means less buffering, which can make playback interruptions more likely. YouTube TV Help puts it this way: “The lower the broadcast delay, the less buffer the video player will have. With a lower broadcast delay, you’re more likely to experience playback interruption.” Network congestion or Wi-Fi interference can also delay live programming. Choose Default if uninterrupted playback matters more than getting closer to real time. See YouTube TV’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

When the problem appears to come from one stream

If the same stream is out of sync on multiple devices while other streams play normally, report the stream and describe what you tried, including the device and whether you used the TV speakers, a receiver, a soundbar, or casting. A community product expert has suggested that an issue limited to one channel can point to its feed, while issues across channels can point to home equipment. Treat that as an anecdotal clue, not a diagnosis.

Or let it run in the cloud

If by “radio stream” you mean keeping uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that job—not a lip-sync or cross-service audio-delay control. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on.
