Icecast hosts and serves the radio feed; it does not by itself encode or send that feed to YouTube.
What you need before you start
- The listener URL for the active Icecast mountpoint, plus its audio format or codec. Confirm these with the station operator; a mountpoint is the path identifying a particular stream on the Icecast server. Icecast’s basic setup documentation explains the server, source-client, and listener roles.
- An encoder or relay that can read the mountpoint’s format and produce audio accepted by YouTube. YouTube documents AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. YouTube’s encoder settings recommend 44.1 kHz stereo audio at 128 Kbps and constant bitrate encoding.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says livestreaming requires channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and that the user be at least 16 years old. Check your channel’s current status in YouTube Studio.
The Icecast listener URL and credentials are not interchangeable with YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key. The relay reads from Icecast and sends a separate feed to YouTube.
Set up the Icecast-to-YouTube relay

Get the correct mountpoint URL
Ask the station operator for the complete listener URL, including hostname, port, and mountpoint path, and confirm whether access requires credentials. Do not assume the server’s root address is the stream: listeners connect to the server address plus the mountpoint. The source client that publishes a stream to Icecast has a different role from the relay that reads the listener-facing stream. See the Icecast setup guide and Icecast FAQ.

Choose and configure an encoder
Use a graphical encoder or command-line relay capable of reading the mountpoint’s codec and sending a compatible audio feed to YouTube. Identify whether the incoming stream is MP3, AAC, or another format, and check that your encoder can decode it. If it cannot pass the audio through in a format YouTube accepts, it will need to transcode it. Choose settings that meet YouTube’s published requirements; its guidance lists AAC or MP3 over RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 44.1 kHz, stereo, 128 Kbps, with constant bitrate encoding. The appropriate input and output options depend on the source codec and encoder.

Create or select a YouTube encoder stream
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there into the corresponding destination fields in your encoder. They are separate from the Icecast hostname, port, mountpoint, and any Icecast source credentials.

Prefer RTMPS when supported
Use the RTMPS server URL if your encoder offers it. RTMPS is RTMP secured with TLS; YouTube explains how to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in its encoder settings. Confirm that the URL matches the protocol selected in the encoder.

Start the relay and inspect the preview
Start the encoder’s connection to the Icecast mountpoint and YouTube. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and confirm the audio is present and stable. If your broadcast includes a visual component, check that it appears as intended. Then follow YouTube’s on-screen workflow to start the live broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers the preview and live-start workflow.
Choose a relay method that fits your broadcast
A graphical encoder and a command-line relay such as FFmpeg can both be options, but there is no universal configuration that works for every Icecast stream. FFmpeg documents Icecast-related protocol options and RTMP output; those capabilities do not guarantee that a particular command will work with every mountpoint, codec, build, or YouTube ingest configuration. When deciding whether to run the relay yourself or use a hosted service, assess these practical factors:
- Codec compatibility: Can the relay decode the Icecast input and send audio in a format YouTube accepts?
- Reliability and monitoring: How will you notice a dropped source or destination connection, especially during a long or unattended broadcast?
- Network capacity: Does the relay host have a stable connection and enough outbound bandwidth for the YouTube feed?
- Latency and buffering: How much delay does the relay introduce, and is that acceptable for the broadcast?
- Credentials: Who can access the mountpoint URL, any Icecast credentials, and the YouTube stream key?
- Operational work: Self-hosting means maintaining the relay machine and its software; a hosted option shifts some of that work but requires checking its codec support, mountpoint access, relay policy, availability, and cost.
Protect the stream key and check permissions
Treat the YouTube stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. Do not publish it in a command shared publicly, a screenshot, or an unsecured configuration file. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube describes stream-key handling and reset steps in its encoder setup guidance.

Before broadcasting, confirm that you have permission to relay the Icecast station’s audio to YouTube. The fact that a stream is publicly listenable does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies also apply; review the relevant guidance in YouTube’s copyright help and reused-content policy. A live relay should not be treated as a way to bypass rights or channel rules.

- Encoder cannot connect to Icecast: Recheck the hostname, port, complete mountpoint path, and any required listener credentials. Confirm that the relay machine can reach the listener URL and that the stream is active.
- Connection works but audio is silent or garbled: Verify the mountpoint’s actual codec and whether the encoder supports it. If needed, configure the encoder to decode and transcode to a YouTube-supported format rather than assuming the source can be copied unchanged.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the encoder destination uses the server URL and stream key from the correct YouTube stream, and that the selected RTMP or RTMPS protocol matches that URL. If the key may have been exposed or changed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The preview is absent or not ready: Confirm that the relay is running and sending output, then allow Live Control Room to detect the feed. Follow YouTube’s preview guidance before starting the broadcast.
- The channel cannot go live: Check channel verification, age requirements, and any live-streaming restriction shown in YouTube Studio. Eligibility is controlled by YouTube and may change.
- The relay stops during a long broadcast: Inspect the source connection, relay process, and network stability. For an unattended setup, arrange monitoring and a recovery plan; do not assume a local encoder will restart itself after every failure.
