How to Make a YouTube Live Stream from Recorded Videos on a Low Budget in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can loop a recorded video on YouTube Live inexpensively with a computer you already own, free OBS Studio software and a stable internet connection. Enable live streaming on your channel, add the recording to OBS as a looping Media Source, connect OBS to a YouTube event with its stream URL and key, then preview the stream before taking it public. The main ongoing costs are your internet and any extra power or equipment—not a required paid encoder.

Before you start: confirm your channel and connection

Check YouTube live-stream access

In YouTube Studio, confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel and that it has no live-streaming restriction from the prior 90 days. YouTube requires channel verification, and streamers must be at least 16 years old. Check access before preparing an event; eligibility issues can prevent you from going live.

Test the internet you will actually use

Run an upload-speed test on the computer and connection you plan to stream from. YouTube advises leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom; its guidance is general, not an India-specific guarantee. The encoder bitrate is only part of the connection’s workload, and a speed-test result does not guarantee that your connection will remain stable for the whole broadcast. If the connection varies, choose a lower bitrate rather than planning around its best result.

Compare your expected stream duration and bitrate with your own data allowance. Indian broadband tariffs and data limits vary by provider and plan, so there is no reliable universal rupee cost or data estimate for this setup. If the computer is connected over Wi-Fi, test that arrangement first. A wired connection may be worth trying if the current network is unstable; an Ethernet cable is optional, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of improvement.

Prepare the recorded video in OBS

Use a local file and check its playback

Install OBS Studio, which is free and open source. Keep the recording on the computer running OBS rather than relying on a file that may become unavailable during the broadcast. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM. Add the file as a Media Source in your scene, enable its Loop option if you want playback to repeat, and verify both picture and audio in OBS before the event. OBS documents Loop as repeating the file once playback has completed.

Check the recording from beginning to end if possible. Confirm that the sound is audible and not clipping, that the picture fits the canvas as intended, and that the file does not contain a long unintended blank section. If you change the recording or OBS scene later, preview it again before broadcasting.

Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload can sustain

YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance gives these reference bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection or computer can sustain them.

Output YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance
480p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps minimum; 4 Mbps recommended
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended

For a low-cost first attempt, select the lowest resolution and bitrate that look acceptable for your footage and fit your tested upload capacity with headroom. Motion-heavy or detailed footage can make compression more visible, but a higher setting is not useful if the connection cannot hold it steadily. Start conservatively and test with footage similar to what you intend to broadcast.

Set the encoder basics

  • Use H.264 video encoding and AAC or MP3 audio, matching YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
  • Use constant bitrate (CBR) for video and set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Choose the output resolution and frame rate to match the intended broadcast and the upload capacity you tested. The bitrate table above applies to the listed 30 fps outputs.

Exact OBS menu labels can vary by version. In OBS, find the stream and output controls in Settings, and verify the resulting picture and sound using the preview rather than assuming a setting worked as intended.

Create the YouTube event and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow, then set its title, visibility and other event details.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings and its Stream section, select the YouTube service or enter the server details, and provide the URL and key as required by the chosen connection method. Use RTMPS when supported for encrypted delivery, as YouTube recommends.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not post it or show it on screen. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s reset flow and update OBS with the new key.
  4. Start OBS output and wait for YouTube’s preview. Check that the correct video and audio are arriving in the Live Control Room before clicking Go Live. Starting the encoder and making the event public are separate actions.
  5. Monitor the broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream health and check audio and picture quality while live. If possible, test in advance with a similar recording, bitrate and network connection.

End the broadcast and understand what gets archived

When the event is over, end it in YouTube’s Live Control Room and stop the encoder output in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived in the same way; if the recording matters, keep your original file and plan a separate recording or archive workflow.

Rights and monetization: a recording is not automatically safe to rebroadcast

Use only video, music and other material for which you have the necessary rights and permissions. YouTube may terminate a livestream for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes, and a Content ID claim may arrive after the stream if it is archived. Owning a copy of a song, game clip or video does not by itself establish that you have permission to broadcast it.

YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other video formats. Its reused-content rules address content repurposed from YouTube or another online source without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. Reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement, so permission alone does not guarantee monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s policies before building a channel around repeated or third-party recordings.

Low-budget choices and likely failure points

Start with the equipment you already have

OBS on an existing computer is the documented low-cost route for looping a local recording. Before buying anything, check whether that computer can play the file and encode the chosen stream settings while maintaining a stable connection. Consider alternatives by comparing any one-time hardware or software cost, measured sustained upload, supported resolution and bitrate, unattended playback needs, and whether you can monitor failures.

Diagnose common problems

  • You cannot start a live event: Check that channel verification and live-stream access are complete and that there is no relevant restriction from the prior 90 days.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder: Confirm the event’s stream URL and key in OBS, check that the encoder is running, and reset the key if it may have been exposed.
  • The preview buffers or stream health is poor: Lower the bitrate or resolution, retest upload capacity, and leave YouTube’s recommended headroom. Try a more reliable network connection if available.
  • The video stops instead of repeating: Confirm that Loop is enabled on the correct OBS Media Source and that the intended file is selected.
  • The picture appears but audio is missing or wrong: Check the source’s audio routing and levels in OBS, then verify sound in the YouTube preview before going public.
  • The livestream ends or receives a claim: Check YouTube’s notices and review the rights for every video and audio asset. Avoid assuming that an archived stream is exempt from copyright review.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the recorded video to keep looping without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs an uploaded video as a YouTube livestream from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI works as well as cards. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
