Set a retry count and wait interval suited to your setup, then test the full stream before relying on it. This makes OBS retry; it cannot fix an ongoing network fault or guarantee YouTube will resume the same live event exactly as before.
Turn on automatic reconnect in OBS
- Open OBS settings. In OBS Studio, select Settings → Advanced.
- Enable automatic reconnect. Turn on the automatic reconnect option. OBS documents this setting in its overview guide: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Choose retry behavior. Set the maximum number of retries and the starting retry wait to match how long an interruption might last. OBS’s output API describes supported outputs retrying up to a configured maximum, with the wait doubling on later attempts. Interface labels, supported outputs, and defaults can differ by OBS version; there is no universal recovery time to rely on.
- Save and verify the YouTube destination. Check that OBS is sending to the intended YouTube stream URL and using the correct stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials; do not show them in public screenshots or shared logs. If a key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. See Manage live stream settings.
Automatic reconnect is the encoder retrying its connection to YouTube. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings have a different purpose: they let the encoder start or stop a stream. YouTube does not describe those settings as reconnect retries. Enabling them is not a substitute for OBS automatic reconnect.
Test the stream before the scheduled broadcast
Do not wait for a children’s program to discover whether retry settings work. YouTube recommends setting up and testing encoders ahead of time, checking the stream preview and stream health, and verifying backup-encoder failover when using one. Its guide is YouTube live streaming tips.
- Start a test stream using the same OBS profile, network, stream key workflow, and YouTube event configuration you plan to use.
- Confirm the preview appears in Live Control Room and watch stream health for problems.
- Simulate a brief disconnection in a controlled test. Confirm OBS attempts to reconnect and check what happens in the YouTube preview and player.
- If you have configured a separate backup encoder, test switchover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player moves to the backup source. Do not assume a backup works until you have observed the handoff.
A retry may restore the encoder connection, but the reviewed YouTube and OBS guidance does not promise that every interruption resumes seamlessly or preserves the same live-event state. Judge your setup by the test result, and have a plan for restarting or communicating with viewers if recovery fails.

If reconnect keeps failing, troubleshoot the network
Reconnect retries help with a temporary interruption; they do not repair a connection that remains unavailable or cannot sustain the stream. Work through likely causes before changing equipment.
Check upload capacity and bitrate
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total streaming bitrate. This is YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee of stability. Check the stream’s total bitrate against the upload capacity available while the broadcast is running, including other devices using the connection. If capacity is tight, reduce the encoder bitrate to a level the connection can sustain and test again. YouTube’s advice is in Streaming tips.

Look for instability on the local network
- Prefer a wired connection for the streaming computer where practical; Wi-Fi interference or fluctuations can interrupt an otherwise adequate connection.
- Check whether other devices or uploads are consuming bandwidth during the stream.
- Inspect the modem, router, Ethernet cable, and network connections if symptoms point to a local fault. Replace hardware only when testing indicates a problem, rather than treating a new cable or router as an automatic-reconnect solution.
The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide discusses unstable connections, bitrate exceeding available capacity, and potentially faulty networking hardware. It notes that dropped frames are often a connection issue to diagnose rather than something a reconnect switch alone can cure.
When to use a backup encoder
A backup encoder is a separate continuity measure, not a feature of the primary encoder’s automatic reconnect setting. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder’s failover. It can provide another stream source if the primary fails, but it requires a second encoder and a verified switchover. If you do not have that setup, prioritize stable upload capacity and test the primary encoder’s retry behavior.

Set the correct audience for a children’s stream
“Kids’ stream” does not by itself determine the YouTube audience setting. The creator must select the accurate designation for the content. For streams marked Made for Kids, YouTube says live chat and reminder notifications are among the features disabled, and other features may be restricted. These audience rules are separate from reconnect behavior; consult YouTube’s current live-stream restrictions guidance and choose the designation that applies to the content.
