You will also need a recovery plan and permission for the specific recordings and stream use: a traditional bhajan composition does not automatically make a particular performance or recording free to broadcast.
Before you set up the stream
Check channel access and music rights
- Confirm that live streaming is enabled on your YouTube channel and that you can create a live stream in Live Control Room.
- Use recordings and visuals you own or have permission to stream. Get written permission that covers live streaming, YouTube use, territory, duration and archiving, where applicable.
- If a rights holder uses Content ID, ask them to add your channel to the allowlist. YouTube warns that a stream can be interrupted for claimed music even when you have permission if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Rights vary by country and by the specific work and recording. The U.S.-focused Music Publishers Association explains that audiovisual recordings of performances may require synchronization rights in addition to public-performance rights; consult the rights owners and licensing bodies for your intended territory and use. Its guidance is at Streaming Live Music: What You Need to Know.
Choose a VPS based on the actual stream
There is no universal VPS size established for this workload. A static devotional image can reduce video-encoding work, but actual resource needs depend on your media, output settings and host limits. Check the provider’s sustained CPU policy, memory, disk, outbound traffic and network terms. Test the real stream rather than assuming that a plan advertised for general use will sustain it.
Prepare the VPS and media
- Install FFmpeg. Use the package or installation method supported by your Linux distribution, then check the installed build with
ffmpeg -version. Option availability and codec support can differ between builds; consult the installed help and the FFmpeg documentation. - Upload the source file. Keep a copy somewhere other than the VPS. Check its video and audio codecs, duration and playback before using it for a continuous stream. A short local playback test can reveal a corrupt file, missing audio or an unexpected aspect ratio before you troubleshoot YouTube.
- Create a visual track if needed. If your recording is audio-only, pair it with a still image or other visuals you have permission to use. Test the combined media and audio end to end; do not assume that a static image eliminates all encoding or network requirements.
- Plan the playlist. One file can be looped indefinitely. For a sequence of recordings, prepare and test a playlist or another playback arrangement that advances through the files as intended. Verify transitions and total playback behavior before leaving it unattended.
Set YouTube’s live encoder settings
Create or open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and use the current server URL and stream key shown there. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a TLS-protected form of RTMP, for ordinary live ingestion. Do not rely on an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. Keep the stream key private: do not put it in public logs, screenshots or source code.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval recommendation; it advises not exceeding four seconds. Its H.264 table recommends 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Those are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees of viewer quality or a VPS sizing rule. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate.
YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers. Test at the resolution and bitrate you intend to use, with the actual bhajan audio, and inspect stream health in Live Control Room. A connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate can produce dropped frames or interruptions.

This is an illustrative starting command, not a universal preset. Replace the file path and quoted destination with values for your stream. Copy the RTMPS server URL and key from Live Control Room; avoid saving a real key in a shell history or a script that other users can read. The example’s 5 Mbps video rate corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p at 30 fps, but the command does not itself set or verify the source resolution or frame rate. Match the output settings to your media and YouTube’s current guidance.

Run a short test before setting up unattended operation. Watch the FFmpeg output for errors, listen to the audio and check Live Control Room’s stream health. If your source is audio-only or your files have different codecs, adapt the command and test the exact combination. Use ffmpeg -h and the documentation for the installed build because option behavior and codec availability can vary.
Keep FFmpeg running and recover from failures
Use a service manager
Run the encoder under a Linux service manager such as systemd rather than in an interactive SSH session. Configure the service to restart after a process failure, set an appropriate restart delay, and direct logs somewhere you can inspect. Keep the stream key in a protected environment or configuration file with restricted permissions. Test that the service starts after a VPS reboot and that you can stop and restart it deliberately.

A process restart can recover from an encoder crash; it cannot by itself fix a wrong or expired key, host maintenance, a network outage or a YouTube-side interruption. Check both the service logs and the stream status in Live Control Room after deployment and after changes.
Test network recovery
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents options including attempt_recovery and retry delays for output recovery. These can help with some network-output failures, but behavior depends on the chosen input, output and configuration. Test recovery before relying on it; it does not guarantee that YouTube will preserve the same live session after a disconnect. See the FFmpeg formats documentation.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits immediately | Invalid file path, unsupported codec, unavailable encoder or malformed command. | Check the error output, confirm the file exists and inspect its streams. Verify encoder availability with the installed FFmpeg build’s help, then test playback locally. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect endpoint or key, stream not created, or RTMPS connection failure. | Copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the stream is ready, and check for typos. Keep the key private. |
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | Outbound bandwidth cannot sustain the selected bitrate, VPS network instability, or host resource constraints. | Check VPS CPU and network use, provider limits and YouTube stream health. Test at a lower supported bitrate or resolution and re-check. |
| Video works but audio is missing or distorted | Unexpected source audio format, incorrect mapping or unsuitable encoding settings. | Inspect the file’s audio stream, listen to a local test and verify the output audio codec and rate. Retest with the actual media. |
| Stream stops after a process or network failure | No process restart policy, recovery options not configured, or the platform session did not resume. | Check service logs, test a deliberate restart and reconnect using the current Live Control Room workflow. Treat encoder and platform recovery as separate concerns. |
| YouTube replaces or interrupts the stream | Third-party content match or other platform-side enforcement. | Review YouTube’s notice and stop using disputed material. Confirm permissions and ask the rights holder to allowlist the channel in Content ID where applicable; a license alone does not ensure uninterrupted ingestion. |
Alternatives if you do not want to maintain a VPS
StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: it runs an always-on YouTube stream from the cloud, plays uploaded videos at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free with no card.
Other approaches trade control for convenience or require a machine you keep running:
- OBS: a free, open-source graphical encoder that can run on a computer that stays powered on. You still maintain that machine and its connection. OBS notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; see the OBS Help Portal.
- Hosted playlist service: 247 LiveStream describes uploading media, creating a playlist and streaming from its servers to YouTube and RTMP platforms while your computer is off. Those are vendor claims; check current destination support, run limits, storage, reliability, security and pricing directly at 247 LiveStream.
Compare options on maintenance, looping and playlist behavior, destination support, recovery, storage and outbound-transfer limits, current cost, and the rights workflow. Vendor descriptions are not independent reliability benchmarks.
