Usually, no: if your computer actually enters sleep, don’t count on a YouTube meditation stream continuing uninterrupted. The answer depends on what you mean by “stream”: watching someone else’s video is different from broadcasting your own channel. For listening, turn off the display while keeping the computer awake. For broadcasting, a computer-based encoder must stay running and connected, or you need a compatible standalone encoder or cloud service.
First: are you watching a stream or broadcasting one?
If you’re listening to someone else’s meditation stream
Sleep can interrupt the browser and its network connection, stopping playback. The practical fix is to distinguish the screen turning off from the computer going to sleep: let the display turn off while the computer stays awake and connected, or play the stream on another device that remains active.
YouTube’s computer player also has a Sleep Timer, but it does the opposite of keeping a stream alive: it pauses playback after the chosen interval. See YouTube’s Sleep Timer instructions.
If you’re broadcasting your own meditation stream
A software encoder running on your computer needs that computer awake, running, and connected to send the feed. YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders, which can remove the computer from some workflows; whether one works depends on its capabilities and whether it accepts your video source. YouTube explains encoder setup and stream keys in its live encoder guide and lists verified hardware encoders.

Keep playback going while you listen
- Check which power state you need. If you want the same computer to keep playing audio, configure it to turn off the display without entering sleep. Leaving the screen on is not necessary if the computer remains awake.
- On a Mac, check the power setting. Apple documents a Battery setting called “Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.” Its availability and behavior depend on the Mac and macOS version. Apple describes “Wake for network access” separately, for access to shared services; don’t assume it keeps a browser video or encoder active. See Apple’s sleep and wake settings.
- On Windows, review screen and sleep timeouts. Set the display to turn off after your preferred interval, but keep the computer awake for the duration of playback. Network behavior during sleep can vary, and Microsoft notes that relevant network settings depend on PC hardware. See Microsoft’s guidance for keeping a PC awake.
- Check power and connectivity. For a long listening session, use a reliable power source and confirm the device remains connected to the internet while the display is off. If playback stops, try another device that stays awake rather than assuming sleep preserves the browser session.
Keep your own YouTube broadcast live
- Choose an encoder that fits your source. A software encoder runs on a computer, so the host must stay awake and online. A standalone hardware encoder may operate without the computer, but verify that it supports the input source and unattended workflow you intend to use.
- Configure the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. The stream key tells the encoder where to send its feed; treat it as private and don’t share it.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start a test broadcast, confirm that the picture and sound reach YouTube, and check stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring streams. If an event ends, its encoder guidance says to stop the encoder after the stream has stopped on YouTube.
- Verify any hardware-specific workflow. YouTube’s encoder guide lists AJA HELO Plus and describes direct YouTube streaming and PlayToStream for scheduling pre-recorded media without a computer. That product description does not establish that every live-input setup works without a computer; check the encoder’s documentation against your source and use case.
