How to Stream an Internet Radio Station Live on YouTube in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To simulcast an internet radio station on YouTube, route its program audio into an encoder, create a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, enter the stream details, test the audio and connection, then start the stream. Before broadcasting, confirm that your permissions cover online use of both the recordings and the underlying music and lyrics—and the territories where your YouTube stream may be watched. A terrestrial-radio licence should not be assumed to cover a YouTube simulcast.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current start guide says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person starting the stream must be at least 16.
  • An encoder-capable computer or other encoder, plus a way to route your station’s finished program audio into it. The routing method depends on your playout software and computer; YouTube does not prescribe one universal setup for internet-radio audio.
  • A stable internet connection with enough outbound upload capacity for the complete stream.
  • Written confirmation that your music, recording, performance and territorial rights cover the broadcast you plan to make.

You can run an audio-led stream with a still image or simple visual, or add live studio video. A dedicated hardware encoder is not a universal requirement. YouTube lists microphones, headsets, mixers and hardware encoders as examples for more elaborate setups, not as mandatory purchases. A USB audio interface may help if you need to connect external microphones or studio equipment and your current system cannot route those sources cleanly.

Set up the YouTube broadcast and encoder

  1. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, go to Create and choose Go live to open the live-streaming workflow. Create a new broadcast or schedule one, and choose the encoder method rather than a webcam or mobile workflow. The exact labels can change; use the encoder option in Live Control Room.
  2. Route the station output to the encoder. Select the station’s program output as the encoder’s audio source. If you want a visual, add a still image, animation or live studio camera source. Confirm that the selected input is the program listeners should hear, not an unmonitored microphone, a silent desktop capture or a preview bus.
  3. Enter YouTube’s stream details. Copy the server address and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder. The key controls access to the broadcast input: keep it private, do not show it on screen or share it with people who should not be able to send video or audio to your stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room before broadcasting.
  4. Set the encoder for a stable stream. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, HEVC or AV1 video codecs in its encoder guidance. For RTMP/RTMPS audio, it lists AAC or MP3. Use the format and settings supported by your encoder and the YouTube workflow displayed for your broadcast.
  5. Test the complete chain. Start the encoder as a test, then check the preview in Live Control Room and listen to the stream output. Test with the same playout, visuals and expected audio changes you will use on air. Check that speech and music are audible, the image is correct, and the stream health indicator does not show an issue before starting or announcing the broadcast.
  6. Start the broadcast. Once the preview and audio are correct, use Live Control Room to start the live stream. Confirm the public watch page is accessible on the channel before directing listeners to it.

Encoder settings for an audio-first broadcast

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends 128 kbps for stereo audio. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder will deliver a clean stream.

  • Audio: Use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and set stereo audio to the recommended 128 kbps where your encoder permits it. Monitor the actual stream; a meter moving in the encoder does not prove the YouTube preview contains sound.
  • Video: Choose a resolution and bitrate appropriate to the visual. A static image or simple visual does not need an unnecessarily high video setting just because the station’s audio is high quality. Higher video settings increase the required upload capacity.
  • Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds if available, and do not exceed four seconds, following YouTube’s recommendation.
  • Protocol and codec: Use the ingestion protocol and video codec accepted by the encoder and the YouTube stream setup. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, HEVC and AV1 for encoder streaming.
  • Upload capacity: YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth about 20% above the total outgoing stream bitrate. Check outbound upload capacity rather than relying on download speed alone, and leave headroom for normal connection variation.

Settings and platform requirements can change. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the values presented in Live Control Room immediately before a scheduled broadcast.

If the program is already recorded, StreamNeo can keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream; it is not a way to take a live studio or internet-radio audio feed, and it does not go live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. UPI works in India. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.

Clear music and broadcast rights before going live

YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have all necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants, and to satisfy territorial licensing, registration, notification and approval requirements. YouTube also requires compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Those terms do not determine whether a particular Indian station’s existing licences are sufficient.

For a station playing commercial recordings, check distinct rights layers and the actual scope of each agreement:

  • Underlying musical and literary works: IPRS says its licences cover public performance and communication to the public by broadcasting or streaming for works it controls, and describes internet interactive and non-interactive licensing categories. Its guidance says platforms using music, including online streaming and OTT platforms, need a licence for IPRS repertoire and/or must pay the relevant author royalty share. This does not establish that a specific station’s arrangement covers every work or use in its playlist.
  • Sound recordings: PPL India describes a radio broadcast licence for its repertoire on terrestrial private or public FM and community radio. Its FAQ says it does not issue sound-recording licences for digital-platform use and directs users to individual labels for that usage. Do not assume that terrestrial-radio permission covers YouTube; check the relevant label or rightsholder and the written contract.
  • Broadcasts and performances: The Copyright Office’s published Copyright Act text addresses broadcast reproduction rights and performers’ rights, including rights connected with broadcasting and communication to the public. If you relay another broadcaster’s program or include live performances, verify permissions for those elements too.
  • Territories and uses: Establish whether your agreements cover YouTube, live simulcasts, any archived or replayed version, and every territory where the stream may be available. If your rights are territorial, determine whether restrictions such as geoblocking are needed and whether the platform setup can meet them.

Review the station’s actual catalogue, contracts, planned live and archived uses, and audience territories. If coverage is unclear, obtain written clearance from the relevant rightsholders and advice from an India-qualified copyright professional before launch. A general licensing-category description cannot resolve the rights position for a particular station.

Troubleshoot common stream problems

  • Live Control Room does not accept the stream: Check that you selected the encoder workflow, copied the current server address and stream key correctly, and are sending with a supported protocol. Re-copy the details from the active broadcast rather than relying on an old encoder profile. Keep the stream key private.
  • The preview is black or shows the wrong visual: Verify the encoder’s selected video source and confirm that the source is active. For an audio-led stream, make sure the still image or visual source is actually included in the encoder output.
  • The preview has no sound: Check the encoder’s selected audio input, the playout output level, mute controls and channel routing. Listen to the YouTube preview itself; local monitoring alone will not reveal a wrong encoder input.
  • The stream stutters or drops: Compare total outgoing bitrate with stable outbound upload capacity, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and lower video resolution or bitrate if needed. Test the actual connection and program before going live rather than depending on a download-speed result.
  • Audio and video settings are rejected or unstable: Check the current Live Control Room requirements and encoder guidance. Confirm the selected codec, RTMP/RTMPS mode, CBR setting and keyframe interval; use a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds.
  • The stream plays but cannot remain available: A technical test does not clear copyright. If the broadcast is blocked, claimed or otherwise restricted, review the notice and the rights for the specific recording, work, performance and territory before attempting another broadcast.
