Scheduling creates the watch page and broadcast; OBS controls the footage. A looping video alone does not schedule or publish a YouTube live stream.
1. Schedule the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage.
- Choose the option to schedule a stream and enter the event details. Scheduling gives viewers a watch page they can visit and lets them set reminders.
- Review the event’s visibility, date, start time, audience settings, and other details before saving. You can reuse settings from a previous event, but check copied metadata and settings rather than assuming they are correct.
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room and keep its stream URL and stream key available for OBS.

2. Set up OBS to play the VOD
Loop one recording
- In OBS Studio, create or select a scene for the rerun.
- In the Sources panel, add a Media Source, give it a clear name, and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop if you want the VOD to restart automatically when it reaches the end. Check the source preview and audio meters to make sure both picture and sound are present.
OBS documents local media playback for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. If your file does not play, confirm the format and that OBS can access the file at its location.
Loop a sequence of recordings
- Install VLC if it is not already installed on the computer running OBS.
- Add a VLC Video source and select the VOD files in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the sequence when it reaches the end.
A single Media Source is the simpler choice for repeating one file. VLC Video is the documented OBS option for a playlist, and it requires VLC. See the OBS media sources guide.

3. Connect OBS to the scheduled event
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
- Choose YouTube as the service or use the supported YouTube integration available in your installed OBS version.
- If configuring the connection manually, copy the stream URL and stream key from the scheduled YouTube event into the matching OBS fields. Use the details for that event, not a different or outdated key.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If you think someone else has obtained yours, reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
Where the encoder supports it, YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Its encoder settings and bitrate recommendations also advise testing before a broadcast.
4. Choose settings and test the feed
Use a resolution and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain reliably. A higher setting is not automatically better if the connection cannot maintain it. YouTube’s encoder recommendations include a 2-second keyframe frequency, no more than 4 seconds between keyframes, and up to 60 fps; these are configuration recommendations, not a guarantee of stream performance.

- Start streaming from OBS early enough to inspect the incoming feed in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check the preview for the correct VOD, framing, and motion; listen for audio and confirm that the OBS audio meters respond.
- Open the event watch page or channel view to confirm that the scheduled broadcast is reachable as intended.
- Monitor stream health in Live Control Room and fix warnings before the advertised start time. YouTube specifically says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
For bitrate, resolution, and encoder settings, follow YouTube’s current published recommendations and test with the upload connection and hardware you will actually use.
5. Start and end the broadcast
If the event is configured for manual start, use the Go Live control in Live Control Room when you are ready to begin. Starting the OBS feed sends video to YouTube; it does not necessarily make a manually scheduled event public by itself. When finished, end the broadcast in YouTube and stop the encoder feed as appropriate for the event. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe stopping the feed and ending the event.

Rights and policy checks for gaming footage
Do not assume that owning or recording a gaming session automatically clears every element in a rerun. Check the applicable game publisher’s terms and rights for the footage, and review rights for music, licensed tracks, cutscenes, and other third-party material. YouTube’s live settings guidance discusses rights settings and notes that audio and video rights matter, including for trailers; it cannot determine whether your particular VOD is cleared. Check current YouTube policies and the permissions that apply to your actual recording before scheduling it.
Troubleshooting before the event
- The event page exists, but no video appears: Confirm OBS is streaming to the scheduled event’s stream URL and key, then check the Live Control Room preview. Scheduling and media playback are separate steps.
- The video stops at the end: For one file, reopen the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a sequence, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
- The VLC playlist source is unavailable or empty: Install VLC on the OBS computer, then recheck the source and selected files.
- YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health problem: Verify the stream URL and key, inspect the OBS connection, and reduce bitrate or resolution if the upload connection cannot sustain the current settings. Test again and monitor Live Control Room.
- The preview has no sound: Check that the source contains audio, that OBS meters move during playback, and that the expected audio device or output is selected.
- The wrong details appear on the event: Review the scheduled event’s title, description, visibility, timing, and copied settings in YouTube Studio before sharing the watch page.
