A YouTube internet radio stream can keep playing during a power outage only if both the playback equipment and its internet connection continue working. A UPS can power compatible equipment in your home, but it cannot guarantee that your internet provider’s network stays online. If the connection fails, switch to audio saved locally in advance rather than expecting a live stream to keep going.
What has to stay powered
For a home setup, the necessary links may include the modem or optical network terminal (ONT), router, the device playing YouTube, and speakers. If any required device loses power, playback can stop. Modern fiber and cable equipment may need power at your premises to provide service during a commercial outage, the Federal Communications Commission noted in FCC 15-98 (2015) (FCC order).
Power and connectivity are separate problems. A UPS or battery backup can keep compatible local equipment running, but it cannot restore an ISP’s upstream network if that network is unavailable. The FCC noted that many subscribers rely on battery backup or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) during outages; that is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service (FCC order).
Prepare before the power goes out
- Charge your phone, power bank, and any rechargeable speaker. Ready.gov recommends keeping electronics charged and planning alternative charging methods (power outage guidance).
- Check which UPS outlets provide battery backup. Confirm that the equipment you need can use those outlets, and check device power requirements against the UPS specifications.
- Test your intended setup while power and internet service are normal. A test can confirm that the devices are connected as expected; it cannot establish how long a battery will last during an outage.
- Prepare permitted offline audio or other locally accessible listening. YouTube says some videos are unavailable for offline download, so check eligibility and save content in advance where the feature is available (YouTube Premium benefits).
What to do when an outage starts
- Keep essential equipment on backup power. If your UPS has enough capacity, prioritize the networking equipment required for your connection and the playback device. Follow the UPS manufacturer’s instructions and do not assume a generic runtime: actual runtime depends on the connected load and battery specifications.
- Reduce unnecessary device use. On a phone, use screen-off audio playback where supported and avoid activities that are not needed. Lower screen brightness or turn off video when possible; the power savings vary by device and settings.
- Check whether the internet still works. A powered router does not prove that the ISP connection is available. If home internet has dropped, try cellular data or another independent connection only if it is available and functioning.
- Switch to local audio if there is no connection. Use eligible content downloaded ahead of time or another locally stored audio option. An offline copy is a separate listening option, not a way to keep a live YouTube broadcast running.
Will Wi-Fi work during a power outage?
It may, if the modem or ONT and router have power and the provider’s network remains available. A UPS can address the power needed by compatible equipment inside your home, but it cannot ensure that the provider’s facilities beyond your home have power or are operating. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, cellular data is a possible alternative only where coverage and service are working.

Can I listen to YouTube offline?
Some YouTube videos can be downloaded for offline viewing where the feature is available, but not all content is eligible. YouTube also says background play in its mobile apps requires an eligible membership, and some videos cannot play in the background (background playback help). Treat both features as subject to YouTube’s eligibility rules and content availability. Downloaded content may provide local listening if connectivity fails; it does not preserve a live stream once the internet connection is gone.
Plan for a longer outage safely
For an outage that outlasts your UPS or device battery, plan how to recharge and prioritize essential equipment rather than counting on a fixed listening duration. A phone power bank can extend operation of a compatible phone, but it does not power a home modem or router and does not itself provide internet access.

If using a generator, follow its instructions and safety guidance. Ready.gov says to operate generators outdoors at least 20 feet from building openings such as windows, doors, or garages (power outage guidance, 2024). Safety and essential needs take priority over entertainment.
