To keep a YouTube radio stream running with your computer off, the encoder must run somewhere else. For prerecorded programming, that usually means a cloud service that plays uploaded files, or suitable standalone encoder hardware. A local encoder cannot continue sending a stream after the computer running it is shut down.
Why the stream stops when you turn off your computer
YouTube receives a live stream from an encoder: software or hardware that sends audio and video to YouTube. YouTube’s setup requires you to enter the server URL and stream key in that encoder, then start it. If the computer running the encoder is shut down, it stops sending media.
For a radio-style channel built from prerecorded music, ambient audio, or other prepared files, move the playback and encoding to a cloud service or a compatible standalone device. If you want to broadcast from a live microphone or camera, the source and encoder still need to operate somewhere; an uploaded-video service is for prepared recordings, not a live camera feed.

Set up a YouTube stream for prerecorded radio
- Prepare the media. Use audio and video that you own or are authorized to broadcast. Decide whether the channel will play one recording repeatedly or a playlist of recordings.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Go Live and create or select the stream. For a scheduled broadcast, schedule it in Studio and connect the encoder at the scheduled time. Interface labels can change, so follow the current Studio prompts.
- Copy the connection details. Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder or service that will send the stream. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder or cloud broadcast. For a cloud playlist service, upload the files, arrange them into a playlist, enter YouTube’s RTMP destination and key, and start the broadcast from its dashboard. For hardware, follow the manufacturer’s current instructions for configuring the YouTube destination and prerecorded playback.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and shows a preview and live status. Also check the service or device dashboard for its sending status.
YouTube distinguishes the transmission from the watchable event: its API documentation defines a broadcast as an event viewers can watch, while a stream is the means of transmitting audio-video to YouTube. Most channel operators do not need the API to run a radio stream; the distinction matters mainly when managing broadcasts programmatically. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
What the cloud option changes—and what it does not
A cloud-hosted playlist moves file playback and stream sending off your personal computer. The provider’s cloud workers send the media to YouTube, so closing your browser or switching off the home computer does not itself stop the cloud job. This removes the need to leave a local computer on; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. YouTube, a provider, a network path, an invalid stream key, or a problem in a source file can still interrupt a broadcast.

Hardware can also keep a computer out of the playback path, but check the exact model’s current documentation before buying. YouTube’s encoder guide lists AJA HELO Plus and says its optional PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. Copyright, repetitive content, and archives
Use media you have permission to broadcast
Playing music through a live broadcast does not make it copyright-cleared. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s rules. Repeatedly streaming prerecorded material can also raise questions under YouTube’s rules on repetitive content; a live format is not an exemption.

Do not assume a long broadcast will be archived
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” The statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not promise an archive for a stream that runs longer.
Troubleshoot a stream that will not stay live
- YouTube receives no stream: Confirm the encoder is running and that the server URL and stream key are entered correctly. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update the encoder or service with the new one.
- The cloud dashboard says it is running, but YouTube is offline: Check the destination and key in the service, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room. A cloud job running does not prove that YouTube is receiving it.
- The stream stops during a playlist: Check that the affected file plays correctly and that the playlist is configured as intended. A source-file problem can interrupt a cloud broadcast.
- A stream disconnects unexpectedly: Check the service or device status and YouTube status. Outages can interrupt sending; automatic recovery, where offered, is a recovery mechanism rather than a promise that disconnects never occur.
- You expected an archive after a long broadcast: Check the duration. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule covers streams under 12 hours only.
- Hardware does not behave like a continuous radio station: Confirm that the exact model and optional features support your audio source, playlist looping, schedule length, and restart behavior before relying on it.
