The practical target depends on the stream’s video codec, resolution and frame rate: YouTube recommends an encoder bitrate of 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30 or 720p60, 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. Those are stream bitrates—not ISP plan speeds. Your connection must sustain the stream’s total outgoing bitrate, including audio, while accommodating other network use.
Start with the stream settings, not the ISP plan
Choose the resolution, frame rate and codec you intend to send to YouTube, then use YouTube’s matching recommended encoder bitrate as your starting point. A 24/7 schedule does not create a different instantaneous bitrate requirement: the stream sends data at its configured rate whether it runs for an hour or all day. YouTube’s guidance sets bitrates by technical settings, not by program duration.
The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations. They describe the encoder’s output, not a guarantee that an internet connection with the same speed-test result will be stable. YouTube’s live encoder settings lists different values for other codecs, so do not apply an H.264 number to AV1 or H.265/HEVC.
| Incoming video setting | H.264 recommended encoder bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube also lists minimum H.264 bitrates: 3 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60, 5 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. These are minimums in the encoder guidance, not the recommended targets above.

How to translate encoder bitrate into upload speed
YouTube says the total bitrate of the outgoing stream cannot exceed the upload bandwidth available. The video bitrate is not the whole stream: audio contributes to the total, as can any additional stream or network activity using the same connection. A speed-test result is therefore useful only when considered alongside the bitrate and actual network conditions during the broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing upload speed.
- For H.264 720p30 or 720p60, begin with YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps video bitrate, then account for audio and other shared traffic.
- For H.264 1080p30, begin with 14 Mbps video bitrate and account for audio and competing use.
- For H.264 1080p60, begin with 17 Mbps video bitrate and account for audio and competing use.
YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not specify a universal extra percentage or multiplier for headroom. Do not treat the figures as an ISP plan recommendation or assume an advertised upload speed will be continuously available. Measure the connection and test the actual streaming setup instead.

Does a bhajan stream need less upload speed?
Not automatically. A devotional stream with a still image or slow-moving visuals may be suitable for a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate setup, but the right bitrate still depends on the settings chosen and the encoder. If the stream includes video with movement, use settings that match that material rather than assuming it is static. When switching to AV1 or H.265/HEVC, check YouTube’s codec-specific table rather than reusing the H.264 values.
Viewers’ playback quality does not add their bandwidth needs to your upload requirement. YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into output formats for viewers. Your connection carries the stream you send to YouTube, not a separate copy to every viewer.

Test before committing to a 24/7 broadcast
- Set the intended encoder profile. Confirm the outgoing codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate and audio settings in the encoder you will use for the bhajan stream.
- Measure upload capacity. Run a speed test as YouTube recommends. Repeat it when the connection is being used as it normally will be, rather than relying on a single best-case result.
- Run a realistic preflight. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, while expected household or workplace network activity is present. Verify that the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate can be sustained.
- Check stream health. Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test and address instability before relying on the setup for continuous broadcasting.
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMPS as the secure protocol choice. These encoder and protocol settings can help configure the stream correctly, but they do not reduce the bandwidth it needs. YouTube describes latency as the delay from capture and encoding to playback; lower latency can mean more buffering. See its live streaming latency settings for that separate choice.
Connection choices and common problems
- Speed test looks adequate, but the stream drops frames: The result may not reflect sustained upload capacity during the broadcast, or other traffic may be competing for bandwidth. Repeat the test under realistic conditions, check stream health and reduce the encoder bitrate or settings if necessary.
- The stream is unstable only when others use the network: Shared activity can reduce bandwidth available to the encoder. Test with the expected network use, or schedule the stream on a connection that can sustain the total bitrate.
- You are considering Ethernet: A wired connection can connect a fixed streaming workstation by cable, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by the ISP. It is not a substitute for adequate sustained upload bandwidth.
- You want to lower the bitrate: Choose a lower resolution or frame rate if that suits the material, then use the matching codec-specific guidance and test again. Do not assume one bitrate fits every codec and video setting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded bhajan videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping an encoder computer and home connection running. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera.
