Choose OBS if you want a graphical production setup for scenes, visuals, and interactive source changes. Choose FFmpeg if you can manage a command-line media pipeline and want to supervise it on a headless Linux host. Neither is proven inherently more reliable: a 24/7 station depends on the input, network, configuration, recovery plan, and whether you monitor YouTube’s live output—not just whether an encoder process is running.
What matters most for a continuous YouTube radio stream
YouTube accepts encoder-based livestreams and supports continuous 24/7 streams. The encoder sends the Live server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube Studio. If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours; check your channel’s own eligibility and Studio controls before planning a launch. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
The practical distinction is operational. OBS offers a GUI for arranging and inspecting sources; FFmpeg offers a command-line pipeline that can be run and supervised without a desktop. Neither choice removes the need to test the full path from media input to the stream viewers see.
OBS vs FFmpeg at a glance
| Consideration | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Graphical production, scene/source management, and hands-on control. | Scripted input/output pipelines and operators comfortable with command-line configuration. |
| Looping media | Media Source can loop a local file; VLC Video can loop a playlist and shuffle it. | A file-and-playlist loop is possible in a command-line pipeline; the cited operations example uses looping audio and video inputs. |
| Starting and automation | Supports launch parameters such as --startstreaming and selecting a profile or scene. OBS WebSocket is built into OBS Studio 28 and later for external control. |
Can be run under a Linux service manager; one operator’s example used systemd, a watchdog, and scheduled restarts. |
| Recovery evidence | OBS documents automatic reconnect, but that alone does not establish uninterrupted 24/7 operation. | The cited deployment report describes process supervision and additional checks after a silent freeze; it is an individual case, not a general guarantee. |
| Comparative uptime, cost, CPU, or bandwidth | Not established by a controlled comparison. | Not established by a controlled comparison. |
OBS capabilities are documented in the OBS Studio Overview Guide, Media Sources guide, Launch Parameters guide, and Remote Control Guide. The FFmpeg operations example is a single community deployment report, not a controlled comparison: 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose OBS when visual control is important
OBS suits a station operator who wants to change the visual presentation, switch sources, or inspect the running scene through a desktop interface. For audio-led programming, its media sources can play a local recording on repeat or use a looping VLC playlist with shuffle. It also exposes streaming settings and an automatic reconnect option. Those features make operation accessible, but they cannot ensure that the computer, desktop session, input media, or network remains healthy indefinitely.
Configure the media and stream
- Prepare the source. Add a Media Source for a single local file and enable looping, or use a VLC Video source for a playlist and configure looping and shuffle as needed. Confirm that the source plays correctly before streaming. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Enter YouTube’s connection details. In OBS, select the streaming service/server and enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. YouTube’s encoder guide explains where the server URL and key are used: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Set and test the output. Choose video and audio settings appropriate to your media and available upload connection. The reviewed sources do not establish a single bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval that is right for every station, so use the current YouTube Studio guidance for the selected format and test the actual stream before relying on it.
- Enable reconnect and rehearse interruptions. OBS documents automatic reconnect. Test what happens if the network briefly drops or the input ends; verify that OBS reconnects and that YouTube resumes showing a live stream rather than an idle or frozen picture.
- Plan launch and control. OBS launch parameters include
--startstreamingand options for choosing a profile or scene. OBS WebSocket can let external applications control scenes and sources; OBS recommends enabling authentication. These automation features can help with startup and control, but they do not replace health checks. See the launch parameters and remote control guides.
Choose FFmpeg when you can operate a command-line service
FFmpeg is a fit for a stable, scripted media pipeline that can run on a host without a graphical desktop. A cited Ubuntu VPS operator used FFmpeg to loop audio and video inputs and send output to YouTube over RTMP. The operator also used a systemd service with automatic restart, a watchdog checking progress, and scheduled restarts after observing a silent freeze that server-side counters did not detect. This is one operator’s setup, not an official FFmpeg or YouTube recommendation, and its reported four-hour recovery bound applies only to that deployment.

The lesson is to supervise more than process existence. A service manager can restart a crashed process, but a process may remain alive while the stream viewers receive is frozen. Monitor local process/output health and YouTube’s platform-visible stream state, and test how your own pipeline behaves when the input, network, or destination fails. The example is documented in the deployment report.
Reliability: monitor the stream, not just the encoder
OBS documents dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as symptoms associated with an unstable network link or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends checking network, software, and hardware causes: OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting. If frames are dropping, first confirm the upload connection can sustain the chosen output, then inspect the encoder and host for competing load or faults.

For either tool, distinguish three signals: the encoder process is running, the encoder is producing output, and YouTube is actually receiving a healthy live stream. The FFmpeg case report illustrates why these are not interchangeable: local activity and server-side counters did not reveal a silent freeze in the viewer-facing result. Check the stream in YouTube Studio and, where practical, from a separate viewer connection.
OBS Project’s overview advises: “It’s strongly recommended that you test everything as best as you can before starting your first live stream.” That is general testing advice, not a 24/7 uptime guarantee. No controlled OBS-versus-FFmpeg uptime benchmark, crash-rate comparison, or total-cost comparison is established by the sources cited here.
