Put a visible holding scene between games, then switch from it to the next game scene with a deliberate Cut or Fade. In OBS, Studio Mode lets you check the next scene before it reaches viewers. If the screen still goes black, inspect the active scene, source visibility and layer order, and whether the game-capture source is receiving the game.
Set up a visible scene for game changes
A holding scene gives viewers something intentional to see while a game closes, loads, or is replaced. This uses OBS’s scenes and sources: scenes assemble a live layout from sources, and sources can include images or colors. It does not fix every possible black screen, but it avoids leaving the transition dependent on the game capture alone.
- In OBS, create a scene and name it something clear, such as Changing games.
- Add a visible image, color, or text source. Check that it appears in the scene preview.
- Keep each game’s capture and layout in its own clearly named scene, so you can identify the destination before switching.

Use a deliberate transition between games
- Before ending game A, switch the live output to the holding scene.
- Prepare game B and select its scene. If you use Studio Mode, inspect the preview first; the preview and live output are separate, so you can check the next scene before sending it to viewers.
- Send the game B scene live using a transition. Choose Cut for an immediate switch or Fade for a gradual blend. Check the transition duration and test it at the pace you want.
- Rehearse the full sequence—game A → holding scene → game B—and confirm the holding image stays visible and the next game appears when expected.
OBS documents Cut, Fade, configurable transition duration, and Studio Mode in its Studio Overview. A transition only changes how OBS moves between scenes; the destination scene still needs a working, visible source.

Diagnose black output that persists
- Confirm the live scene. Make sure the holding scene or intended game scene—not an unintended scene—is being sent to the live output.
- Check source visibility and order. In OBS, a source above another can cover it. Verify that the game capture is visible and that an image, browser, or other source is not obscuring it.
- Check the capture itself. Confirm the game-capture source is receiving the game. The right fix depends on your operating system, game, and capture method; there is no single setting that applies to every setup.
- Preview or record a test handoff. Rehearse before going live and verify both the holding scene and the next game scene. OBS recommends using preparation to find issues before they appear on stream.
For YouTube streams, YouTube Studio is the platform’s destination for live setup and settings; YouTube’s help also identifies gaming as a common livestream use. Console-native streaming may offer different controls from OBS. See YouTube’s livestreaming guide and manage your live stream settings.
Choose software controls or an optional physical controller
