Buying or downloading bhajans does not give you permission to broadcast them. For licensed music, ask the relevant owners to add your channel to their YouTube Content ID allowlists before you go live; YouTube may interrupt a live stream when it detects third-party content.
Can I play bhajans on a 24/7 YouTube live stream?
Yes, if you have the rights needed for that use. A devotional subject, traditional prayer, or old lyric does not make a particular singer’s performance, arrangement, or recording free to rebroadcast. A track can involve more than one right: rights in the composition and lyrics, and separate rights in the specific sound recording.
Buying a CD, record, or downloaded song gives you a copy to use under the terms of that purchase; it does not by itself grant public-performance or online streaming rights. IPRS says its licenses relate to works in its repertoire and do not grant rights belonging to non-member publishers or owners. PPL’s current guidance distinguishes physical, on-ground use from digital streaming: its on-ground license does not authorize streaming recordings online. For digital use of commercial recordings, contact the label or recording owner.
This is practical guidance, not a legal opinion about a particular song or license. Rights can depend on the work, recording, owners, territory, term, and whether you archive or monetize the broadcast.

How to clear the music before you stream
- Make a track inventory. List each intended recording and identify, where possible, its composer, lyricist or publisher, performers, label, and sound-recording owner. Keep the exact track titles and versions; a permission for one recording should not be assumed to cover another rendition.
- Prefer recordings you control. If you record the music yourself, document contributors’ agreements and confirm that you have the rights needed for the composition, lyrics, performances, arrangement, and recording. Self-recording does not automatically clear someone else’s protected song.
- Check IPRS repertoire and scope. Search the IPRS repertoire and contact IPRS to confirm whether the relevant work is covered and which license category and terms apply to your proposed continuous YouTube stream. IPRS describes categories including internet non-interactive and internet interactive use. Its database contains more than 600,000 song titles, is continually updated, and may not be exhaustive; absence from the search results is not proof that no rights exist.
- Clear sound recordings with their owners. For commercial recordings, ask the relevant label or recording owner for permission to stream them digitally. Do not treat an IPRS license or a PPL on-ground tariff as universal clearance for every right in a track.
- Get the permission in writing. Ask it to identify the recordings, continuous YouTube livestream use, territory, term, monetization or sponsorship conditions, and whether you may keep an archive or replay. Retain the permission and track list where the person operating the stream can find them.
- Ask about Content ID allowlisting. Have each relevant rights holder add your channel to its YouTube Content ID allowlist before launch, and confirm which channel URL or ID they need. Keep their confirmation with your permissions.
Why YouTube may stop a live stream for copyright
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Its live-stream guidance warns that a stream can be interrupted even when the creator has licensed the content if the channel has not been added to the rights holder’s allowlist. A claim or interruption is therefore not proof that you lack a license, but a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. Contact the owner to resolve the allowlisting issue and retain evidence of the license and the requested allowlist.
If you choose to archive the livestream, YouTube says claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends. Decide whether to retain the replay only after confirming that your permission covers both the live broadcast and the archived video. A license for a live-only use should not be assumed to include video-on-demand use.

Set up the continuous radio-style stream
- Choose live-only or live plus archive. Decide this before requesting permissions, so the owner can authorize the exact use you intend.
- Prepare the authorized playlist. Use only cleared recordings, and check that every item in the rotation is covered. A playlist that loops overnight still requires the same rights as a one-time broadcast.
- Choose an encoder workflow. For a simple radio-style program with a still visual, a computer encoder may be enough. A dedicated hardware video encoder is an optional standalone approach for some operators, not an established requirement; verify that any device is compatible with your chosen workflow.
- Create the YouTube live stream and connect the encoder. Use YouTube’s live control room to set up the stream and its assigned stream key, then enter that key in your encoder. Treat the key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Follow the current settings shown for your YouTube stream and encoder rather than copying settings intended for a different service.
- Test with cleared material. Check that the audio is audible, the visual is present, and the playlist advances as intended. A test can expose setup problems, but it does not prove that every song in a catalog is rights-cleared.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Keep a person responsible for checking stream status, the playlist, and any copyright notices. Have a way to restore the stream if the encoder, power, or internet connection fails.
Bandwidth, internet, and equipment: what the figures do and do not mean
The National Informatics Centre’s webcast guidance specifies dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream, a static public IP, and outbound access for RTMP port 1935 for its webcast service. Those are NIC-specific requirements, not YouTube bitrate recommendations or mandatory YouTube settings. They also do not establish a 24/7 uptime guarantee or replace a tested backup connection and power plan.
The available guidance does not establish a particular YouTube bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, encoder model, or price for this devotional-radio setup. Use the current YouTube and encoder settings applicable to your stream; do not infer YouTube settings from NIC’s service requirements. If continuity matters, plan for the failure points you control: power, internet, computer or encoder, and a playlist or operator error. Test any backup connection and recovery steps before relying on them.

Keep the stream running: common problems and fixes
- YouTube interrupts the stream with a copyright notice: Stop or replace the matched track with material you have cleared. Contact the relevant owner to verify the scope of your permission and request Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
- A licensed track still triggers Content ID: Check whether the correct channel was allowlisted and whether the permission covers that exact recording and use. Send the owner the track details and the notice information to resolve the mismatch.
- The live stream works, but the replay receives a claim: Review whether the written permission includes archiving and replay. If it does not, remove or disable the archive as appropriate and obtain permission before retaining future replays.
- The stream goes offline unexpectedly: Check the encoder, power, and internet connection, then restore the feed using your documented recovery steps. A second connection or a responsible monitor can help address local failures, but neither guarantees uninterrupted service.
- The playlist stops or repeats the wrong material: Review the rotation and confirm each queued file is the authorized version. Test the full sequence, including transitions, before leaving it unattended.
