In OBS, turn on Loop for a single Media Source, or use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled for several clips. If you do not want the story to repeat, prepare a separate scene—such as a host reading live or a calm holding card—and switch to it before the clip ends. A video ending does not automatically mean the YouTube broadcast has ended; manage those separately in YouTube Live Control Room.
Choose what viewers should see after the story
Decide the ending behavior before configuring OBS. Repeating the same video is simple, a playlist can cycle through multiple clips, and a prepared scene lets you continue with live narration or a deliberate pause.

Set up a single story video to repeat
- In OBS, open the scene where the story should appear. In the Sources box, select + and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source, or select an existing one, then choose the video file. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM.
- Enable Loop in the source properties if you want the same file to restart automatically when it finishes.
- Confirm the video appears and plays in the OBS preview. If the story should play only once, leave looping off and prepare the transition scene described below.
Set up several stories as a looping playlist
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS; the OBS VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed.
- In the scene, select + in Sources and add VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the video files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist to restart the playlist after its final item. Choose a fixed order or shuffle according to how you want stories presented.
- Check the source in the preview to make sure the playlist plays as intended before you start the broadcast.
Make a deliberate transition instead of repeating the video
If the story should end once, create the next scene before going live. It might show you reading from a book, a calm holding card, or another intentional transition. OBS may hide a Media Source when playback ends, so a scene that depends on the last frame as its fallback can leave viewers with an unexpected blank or changed layout.

Switch to the prepared scene before the video finishes. If you are narrating live, keep the microphone and camera sources available in that scene and check their visibility in the preview. For a holding card, use wording and visuals appropriate for a children’s audience and make clear whether the stream is paused or the next story is coming.
Keep the YouTube broadcast separate from video playback
Looping a source controls what OBS plays; it does not by itself control whether YouTube considers the broadcast live. Before streaming, review the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube documents separate controls and settings such as auto-start and auto-stop. Check the broadcast state there when you need to confirm the stream remains live after a clip ends.

Children’s livestream rules to check
- Creator age: YouTube says creators must be at least 16 to livestream. Its guidance also says streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have live chat disabled, and the account may temporarily lose access to live chat or other features. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions.
- Made for kids designation: If a stream is designated made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and live chat replay, and personalized ads are disabled on live streams and Premieres. Plan audience interaction and monetization around those limits. See YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance.
- Story and video rights: Use stories, recordings, music, and visuals you have permission to stream. A clip looping successfully in OBS does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it.
If you are embedding a YouTube video instead of playing a local file
The OBS Loop and Loop Playlist controls apply to media sources in your OBS production. If you are embedding a YouTube player, Google’s IFrame Player API has a loop parameter for a single video when the playlist parameter is set to that same video ID. That is an embedded-player setting, not an OBS encoder or local-file playback setting. See the YouTube IFrame Player API reference.
Common problems and fixes
