The important limitation: YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise that a longer, uninterrupted stream will become one complete VOD. If you need saved archives, plan shorter broadcasts and check each one.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast rather than waiting until you are ready to go live. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Create a YouTube broadcast

Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live.

Create a new stream, or use Manage → Schedule stream to make an upcoming watch page. YouTube’s encoder guide allows scheduled streams to use new or reused settings.

Enter the broadcast details in Studio, including title, privacy, and category. Choose the audience and other settings that accurately describe the content.

Keep Live Control Room open so you can retrieve the stream URL and key and monitor the incoming preview.
Connect OBS and prepare the gaming footage

In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube and connect your account, or choose the stream-key option and enter the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The exact options can vary by OBS version and connection method; the OBS Project streaming guide covers the setup.

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not display it in a screen recording, screenshot, or shared scene. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS before broadcasting again.

For PC gameplay, add a game-capture source in OBS and create the scenes you need. Check that the game image fills the canvas as intended and that the correct audio sources are active.

For console gameplay, a capture device may be needed to bring the console’s HDMI output into the computer running OBS. It is not necessary for PC games OBS can capture directly.

Play the VOD or recording through a source OBS can capture, then verify picture and sound in the OBS preview. YouTube supports encoder-based gameplay streams; external microphones, webcams, and headphones are optional production equipment, not prerequisites.
Start the stream and keep it monitored

Start streaming in OBS. Confirm that the incoming preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on the broadcast being visible to viewers.

If the event is scheduled, follow the prompts in Studio. Depending on the broadcast settings, you may need to select Go Live manually; OBS’s scheduled-stream behavior can depend on settings such as Auto-start.

For a long broadcast, periodically check OBS’s connection status, the Studio preview, the video source, and audio. A successful initial start does not guarantee that the computer, OBS, source playback, and internet connection will remain available indefinitely.
Understand the difference between a 24/7 live feed and a VOD
A continuous live destination and a complete saved recording are different outcomes. YouTube Help states, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its guidance does not promise a complete archive for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours. If preserving the whole program as VODs matters, schedule separate broadcasts shorter than 12 hours, plan the transitions, and verify each archive after its broadcast ends.
Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a 24/7 feed that can continue while a separate broadcast carries a subset of that content. This establishes a continuous-feed model at the API level, not a special 24/7 switch in ordinary OBS or a promise that a home computer will stay online indefinitely. The API also exposes recording, DVR, automatic-start, and automatic-stop controls; these are API-level options, not settings every OBS user must change. Archive playback can be affected by recording and DVR choices.
DVR rewind is finite and can vary with configuration and device. Do not assume viewers can rewind indefinitely during a continuous broadcast.

Check rights and YouTube rules for the game footage
Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and YouTube may remove or restrict a stream. Having access to a game does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast every cutscene, soundtrack, or recording around the clock. Check the publisher’s terms and the rights for any music or other material in the footage you plan to use.

You cannot start a live stream: Confirm that live streaming is enabled, the channel is verified, and no active restriction blocks streaming. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours.

YouTube shows no incoming video: Check that OBS is streaming to the intended YouTube account and broadcast, and confirm the server URL and stream key. Make sure the OBS scene contains the intended game or video source and that it is producing an image.

The preview appears but the scheduled event is not live to viewers: Check the Studio prompts and whether the event requires a manual Go Live action. Auto-start and scheduled-stream behavior depend on settings.

There is no game audio or it is too quiet: Check OBS’s audio meters while the game or VOD plays, verify the correct audio source is selected, and listen to the preview or a test recording before starting a long broadcast.

The broadcast disconnects or stops unexpectedly: Check the OBS connection status, computer power and sleep settings, network connection, and whether the footage source is still playing. Local OBS operation depends on all of these continuing to work; the official materials do not guarantee uninterrupted operation for a consumer PC.

The stream is live but the VOD is incomplete or unavailable: Do not treat a stream longer than 12 hours as a guaranteed complete archive. For future broadcasts, divide the schedule into streams under 12 hours and check each archive.
