Enable looping in the OBS source that plays your video, and check YouTube’s auto-stop setting separately. A single video uses Loop in a Media Source; a multi-video playlist uses Loop Playlist in a VLC Video source. YouTube auto-stop governs whether you can reconnect after OBS stops sending, but it does not keep a broadcast alive when there is no incoming video: YouTube says it ends a broadcast around a minute after video stops arriving.
Choose the right OBS source and enable looping
Looping is an OBS playback setting. Use the source type that matches what you are playing:
| What you want to play | OBS source | Setting |
|---|---|---|
| One local video file | Media Source | Enable Loop. |
| Several local video files | VLC Video | Select the files and enable Loop Playlist. |
In OBS, add the appropriate source to your scene, open its properties, choose the video file or playlist, then turn on the corresponding loop option. OBS documents that Media Source repeats a file after playback completes and that VLC Video can repeat its playlist. The documented Media Sources page was published on January 11, 2022; labels may vary with OBS versions. See OBS Media Sources documentation.
VLC Video prerequisites
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. If the VLC Video source is missing, check the VLC installation and that its bitness matches OBS before troubleshooting the playlist itself. OBS lists Loop Playlist as on by default, but verify the setting in the source properties.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not confuse looping with source activation
Media Source also has Restart playback when source becomes active. That option concerns what happens when the source becomes active in a scene; it is not the setting that repeats the video or controls the YouTube broadcast’s lifetime.
Set YouTube auto-stop for the reconnect behavior you want
YouTube’s auto-stop setting is separate from OBS looping. In the YouTube Live broadcast settings, disable auto-stop if you want the option to reconnect to the existing broadcast after encoder streaming stops. OBS’s YouTube integration warns that when auto-stop is enabled, “You will not be able to reconnect.” YouTube describes auto-start and auto-stop as controls for whether streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder. See YouTube’s live stream settings help and the OBS YouTube integration wording.

Auto-stop does not replace looping. YouTube says it automatically ends a broadcast around a minute after video stops arriving on the bound live stream. Turning auto-stop off does not keep an empty or no-signal feed live indefinitely. Keep a valid video source on OBS’s program output—for example, loop the playlist or switch to a continuing holding scene. See Google’s Life of a Broadcast documentation.
Verify the stream and troubleshoot interruptions
- Confirm the source is still playing. Check that the intended OBS scene is on program output and that the Media Source or VLC playlist has its loop setting enabled.
- Check the broadcast’s auto-stop choice. If the encoder stopped and you need to reconnect to that broadcast, confirm auto-stop is disabled for it. YouTube says reusing a stream copies its auto-start and auto-stop choices, so review the settings for the broadcast you are using.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room stream health. OBS says a rising dropped-frames counter together with a yellow or red connection indicator points to an unstable connection to the streaming service or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. See the OBS Help Portal.
- If VLC Video is unavailable, install VLC and match its 64-bit or 32-bit version to OBS.
- If the playlist ends and the broadcast closes, check both layers: OBS must continue sending video, and YouTube auto-stop must be set appropriately if reconnectability matters. The YouTube broadcast lifecycle—not the loop checkbox—determines what happens after video ingest stops.
These settings explain the general playback and broadcast behavior; they do not identify the cause of a particular installation’s network interruption, source bug, or broadcast error.
