How to Stream a Store Promo Video on YouTube Live in a Loop with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a store promo video on YouTube Live, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and stream key, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input and -re to send the file at its normal playback rate. Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public. The command below is a starting template, not a tested preset: verify the file, FFmpeg build, loop transition and upload connection before relying on it.

What you need before starting

  • A store promo video file that plays correctly from beginning to end, with the audio you intend to broadcast.
  • FFmpeg built with the codecs and RTMPS support required by your chosen output settings.
  • A YouTube channel able to create an encoder-based live stream, plus a stable upload connection that can sustain the selected bitrate.
  • A private place to handle the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

You do not need a camera or capture card for this file-to-encoder workflow. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says expensive equipment is not necessary. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming

Create an encoder stream and get the YouTube URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
  2. Create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow if prompted.
  3. Open the stream’s Stream settings. Copy the server URL and stream key exactly as displayed. YouTube’s setup instructions have you enter the server URL and key in your encoder, then start the encoder and inspect the preview. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
  4. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, chat and source control. Treat it as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room and update your encoder configuration.

Prefer the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides it and your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL encryption; do not assume an ordinary RTMP URL is encrypted. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

Run FFmpeg with the promo video on repeat

Use the server URL and stream key from your own Live Control Room. Depending on the URL YouTube displays, the encoder may take them as separate fields or require the key to be included in the output address. For a command-line output, use the exact RTMPS destination formed according to YouTube’s displayed instructions; do not publish the key.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "promo.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "YOUR_YOUTUBE_RTMPS_OUTPUT_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY"

Replace promo.mp4 with the file path and the final placeholder with your private YouTube output destination. This example encodes video with H.264 and audio with AAC in an FLV container. YouTube lists H.264 and AAC among its recommended RTMP(S) encoder settings. The example is illustrative, not a verified preset for every file, FFmpeg build, network or stream. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

What the loop and pacing options do

  • -stream_loop -1 requests that FFmpeg repeat the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the -i it applies to.
  • -re reads the file at its native rate. Without real-time pacing, FFmpeg may process a file faster than its playback duration and send it too quickly for a live feed.
  • The loop option does not add a crossfade, repair source timestamps or guarantee a clean audiovisual seam. Watch the end-to-start transition and test at least one full cycle.

FFmpeg documents these input options in its command-line documentation. Whether a particular promo loops smoothly depends on the media and the installed build; check it in your environment.

When to encode, and when not to assume stream copy will work

The example re-encodes the video and audio. Copying already encoded streams can reduce CPU use in some cases, but compatibility at each loop boundary depends on the source and ingest. The official guidance does not establish that -c copy is safe for every promo. If you try stream copy, test the full cycle and confirm YouTube accepts the resulting feed; otherwise encode to a compatible format.

Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate for the actual file

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum) for its listed RTMP/RTMPS settings. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate; the following 30 fps examples are YouTube-published figures, not guarantees of stream quality or network capacity. Output example YouTube-listed H.264 minimum YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These figures are not one-size-fits-all. Check YouTube’s current table for the exact resolution, frame rate and codec you plan to send, then ensure your sustained upload capacity can carry the selected bitrate. The sample command does not explicitly set a video bitrate or CBR mode, so configure those to match your target and current YouTube guidance rather than assuming the defaults are appropriate.

The command also does not set a keyframe interval explicitly. For an H.264 encode, configure the encoder for the recommended two-second interval and do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum. Settings and account controls can change, so re-check the current encoder page before publishing.

Test in Live Control Room before going public

  1. Start the FFmpeg command and leave it running. Confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed.
  2. Wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check both picture and sound, including representative motion, spoken or musical audio, and the transition from the final frame back to the opening frame.
  3. Review stream health messages and address warnings before going live. YouTube advises checking stream quality during the event; a preview alone does not prove the upload will remain stable over a long broadcast.
  4. When the preview and settings are right, use Live Control Room’s Go live control when ready to make the stream public.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived after stopping. A continuous store loop should therefore have an operator or monitoring plan; the platform guidance does not establish guaranteed unattended uptime. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

Looping a video does not itself make it eligible for monetization or establish that it complies with YouTube’s reused-content rules. Those are separate questions from whether FFmpeg can send the file. Review YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and avoid assuming that permission to stream material also qualifies it for monetization.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • No preview or YouTube does not detect the encoder: verify that the stream is active in Live Control Room, that you copied the current server URL and key, and that the final output destination follows YouTube’s instructions. Check that FFmpeg has RTMPS support if using an RTMPS address.
  • Authentication or connection failure: re-check the URL and key for truncation, spaces or stale credentials. If the key was exposed or regenerated, replace the value used by FFmpeg.
  • FFmpeg reports a missing encoder or unsupported output: use a build with the needed codecs and RTMPS support, or adjust the encoding choices to match what the installed build offers and what YouTube accepts.
  • Video arrives too quickly or playback is not paced like a live feed: make sure -re is before -i, so it applies to the file input.
  • Loop is abrupt, silent or breaks at the boundary: inspect the media’s end and beginning, timestamps, codecs and audio. Test a complete cycle; looping does not create a fade or fix a poorly matched seam.
  • Buffering, dropped frames or stream health warnings: check whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Compare the output against YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec, then lower the target if the upload link cannot reliably support it.
  • Picture or audio differs from the source: remember the sample re-encodes both streams. Check the FFmpeg output and preview, including pixel format, audio level and sync, and revise the encode settings where needed.
