Best OBS Settings for YouTube Live on Limited Upload Speed in India

Match OBS bitrate to measured upload speed, then test the right resolution and frame rate for a stable YouTube stream.

For a limited or inconsistent connection, set OBS to a bitrate your upload can sustain—not the speed advertised on your broadband plan. Measure upload speed near your planned stream time, leave room for household traffic and network variation, then choose a resolution and frame rate whose YouTube bitrate target fits. Start with 720p30 or 720p60 only if your connection can support the matching bitrate; otherwise step down.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

Use measured upload speed, not download speed. Run a speed test on the connection you will stream from and near the time you expect to go live. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for stream bitrate; treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Leave additional room if other people or devices share the connection.

For example, if the measured stable upload is 6 Mbps, 75% is 4.5 Mbps. That makes trying a 4 Mbps H.264 stream more plausible than choosing YouTube’s 8 Mbps H.264 recommendation for 720p30. This is an example of applying OBS’s guidance, not a promise that every 6 Mbps connection can sustain that stream.

YouTube’s figures below are recommended ingest bitrates, not minimum internet-plan speeds. The minimums are included for reference, but meeting a minimum does not guarantee good image quality or a stable stream. These are YouTube Help’s encoder recommendations accessed on 2026-10-03; they are not statistics about Indian broadband or recommendations for a particular Indian ISP.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Output target H.264 recommended AV1/H.265 recommended H.264 minimum AV1/H.265 minimum
480p30 4 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps
720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 2 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 2 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 4 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 4 Mbps

Use the column for the codec selected in OBS. H.264 is a broadly compatible baseline. Use AV1 or H.265/HEVC only when your chosen encoder offers it and your setup supports it. Do not default to 1080p60 if your stable upload cannot carry its bitrate with headroom.

Set OBS for YouTube

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Output → Streaming. Set Rate Control to CBR.
  2. Set the Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  3. Choose an available supported encoder and codec. H.264 is a broadly compatible starting point; if you use AV1 or H.265/HEVC, match the bitrate to that codec’s YouTube column.
  4. Use RTMP or RTMPS as the streaming protocol. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and specifies 128 kbps for stereo audio.
  5. Set the video bitrate to a value that fits your measured upload budget, then choose a resolution and frame rate that suits both the connection and the content.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing upload bitrate and testing the stream before going live. Make the test private or unlisted, and include movement and audio similar to the planned stream. Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame behavior before relying on the settings for an event.

Choose resolution and frame rate for your content

  • Start with 720p30 if you have enough upload for its codec-specific recommendation plus headroom. It is a sensible trial for lectures, talking-head streams and screen shares where 30 fps is adequate.
  • Try 720p60 when motion matters, such as gameplay, and the connection sustains the same recommended bitrate as 720p30 for your codec.
  • Drop to 480p30 if even the lower resolution is needed to keep the stream stable. A lower frame rate can also reduce the demand compared with a higher-motion target.
  • Move up to 1080p only after a representative test shows that your connection can sustain the applicable bitrate. Fast gameplay may benefit from more frames; static slides may not benefit enough to justify using scarce upload capacity.

Maximum resolution is not automatically best: the stream must remain stable, and viewers with weak connections may buffer, particularly with lower latency. Choose based on observed test results as well as image detail and motion needs.

Fix dropped frames and unstable streaming

OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. If too many frames are dropped, OBS may disconnect the stream. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Lower the video bitrate and test again. If necessary, lower resolution or frame rate so the selected target fits the connection.
  2. Check the local network. OBS recommends a wired connection when streaming. Ethernet may help if Wi-Fi is the unstable link, but it cannot increase limited ISP capacity or fix congestion outside your home network.
  3. Try another ingest server, if available. A different route may behave better, though it does not add upload capacity to your service.
  4. On Windows, consider OBS’s Network Optimizations and TCP pacing options. OBS documents these controls for Windows; they are not available on every operating system.
  5. Consider Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment (Beta) in OBS. It can lower bitrate during congestion instead of dropping frames, but it does not fix the underlying connection and image quality can fall while it adjusts.
  6. If Ethernet still fails, check the network path. OBS lists the modem, router, network cable, network card and other network devices as possible fault points. If the cause is unclear, contact your ISP before replacing hardware; ISP-side capacity or route congestion may be outside your control.

Why a good speed test may not prevent drops

A speed test is a snapshot, while a live stream needs the connection to sustain its bitrate throughout the broadcast. Congestion, variation over time, other active devices and an unstable Wi-Fi link can all leave less usable upload than the test suggests. Keep bitrate below the practical capacity, run a test near the planned stream time, and judge the result by OBS dropped frames and YouTube stream health—not the headline speed alone.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your aim is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos rather than stream a camera or play a live game, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI works for payments in India.
