How to Use FFmpeg to Stream 4K 60fps to YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a local video file at 4K and 60 fps to YouTube Live, use FFmpeg with an H.264 video bitrate target of 50 Mbps (or 35 Mbps for HEVC/AV1), constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends RTMPS. The example below is a starting template, not a universal drop-in command: your FFmpeg build, source file, encoder capacity, and upload connection all matter.

Choose the 4K60 video settings

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends these video bitrates for 2160p at 60 fps:

Video codec YouTube-recommended video bitrate Considerations
H.264 50 Mbps Use an FFmpeg build with a suitable H.264 encoder, such as libx264, and confirm your system can encode the source at 4K60 in real time.
HEVC/H.265 or AV1 35 Mbps Encoder availability and options vary by FFmpeg build and system. Check the installed encoder’s help and verify real-time performance before relying on it.

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of performance or delivery. The video bitrate excludes audio and transport overhead, so leave upload headroom rather than choosing a connection that only matches the video target. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and selecting settings your connection can sustain. For 4K, YouTube optimizes the stream for normal latency; its low-latency option is unavailable. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance

Frame rate, keyframes, and rate control

  • Use CBR, as YouTube recommends.
  • Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. At 60 fps, that is 120 frames; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Ensure the actual outgoing frame rate is 60 fps. If converting a source with a different cadence, choose frame-rate conversion deliberately and check the result rather than assuming the input is already 60 fps.

Encoder rate-control behavior can vary. A bitrate flag is not proof that the stream will hold the intended rate; check FFmpeg output and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.

SDR color and audio

For conventional SDR, YouTube recommends square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709, 8-bit depth, and CBR. It recommends AAC or MP3 audio; its listed stereo recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. The example command below uses AAC at those audio settings. If the source has no audio stream, the optional audio mapping means FFmpeg will not fail just because audio is absent; include audio if your broadcast needs it.

For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Do not treat HDR as a one-flag change: confirm the source’s color properties and the selected encoder’s HDR support and configure the workflow accordingly. YouTube’s encoder settings and HDR guidance

Prepare YouTube Live and protect your stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the ingest URL and stream key for your broadcast. The values are account-specific; there is no universal working URL/key to copy from an article.
  2. Keep the stream key private. Do not put a real key in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, YouTube says you can reset it in Live Control Room. Manage live stream settings
  3. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest where available. RTMPS carries RTMP over an SSL connection. FFmpeg protocol documentation

Run an illustrative FFmpeg command for a local file

Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the endpoint placeholder with the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in your Live Control Room. Keep the actual key out of any published example or shared terminal capture.

ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -b:v 50M -maxrate 50M -bufsize 100M
  -r 60 -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
  -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

This is an illustrative H.264 template, not a command verified on every platform or FFmpeg build. Confirm your build includes libx264. The video target follows YouTube’s 2160p60 H.264 recommendation; -g 120 sets a 120-frame GOP, which is two seconds at 60 fps. The rate-control flags express the intended target but do not guarantee a particular network bitrate on every encoder.

What the main options do

  • -re reads a file at its native rate, which is useful for simulating a live source from stored media.
  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream; -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if one exists.
  • -c:v libx264 selects the H.264 encoder; -preset veryfast trades some compression efficiency for lower encoding effort.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize configure the intended video rate-control target and buffer for this template.
  • -r 60 requests a 60 fps output; -g 120 and -keyint_min 120 set the GOP/keyframe cadence for 60 fps, while -sc_threshold 0 disables scene-cut keyframes in this x264 example.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p selects a common 8-bit 4:2:0 pixel format. Confirm that it matches your intended SDR workflow.
  • -f flv selects the container commonly used with RTMP/RTMPS output.

FFmpeg documents explicit stream selection with -map and describes -re as reading at native frame rate, mainly for simulating a live source from a file. Do not use a reduced read rate on an actual capture or live input; FFmpeg warns it can cause packet loss. FFmpeg documentation

Using HEVC instead

For HEVC/H.265, use an FFmpeg build that provides a suitable HEVC encoder and set the video target to YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommendation for 2160p60. Hardware encoder names and options differ across systems and builds, so check the encoder options installed on your machine instead of copying a guessed NVENC, QSV, or VideoToolbox configuration. Confirm the outgoing codec and bitrate in a test stream. For HDR, YouTube’s guidance favors H.265. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance

Test the stream before your broadcast

  1. Check that the outgoing video is 3840×2160 at 60 fps, uses the codec you intended, and has a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds.
  2. Test with representative motion and audio. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube live encoder settings
  3. Check that the upload connection can sustain the stream with headroom for audio and transport overhead. If it cannot, lower the target bitrate or use settings the connection can reliably maintain.
  4. Watch stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube’s API documentation describes health diagnostics including low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and keyframe/GOP issues. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams

Fix common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder The installed build does not include libx264 or the selected codec encoder. Check available encoders in your FFmpeg build; use a build with a suitable encoder or select one that is installed and verify its options.
The video stutters, drops frames, or falls behind The computer may not encode 4K60 in real time, or the connection may not sustain the bitrate. Test encoding capacity and upload stability separately. Reduce the encoding load or bitrate, or choose a codec and settings your system and connection can handle reliably.
YouTube reports low bitrate The outgoing rate may be below target or the upload may be unstable. Check FFmpeg’s output and upload capacity; leave headroom and choose a sustainable target. Do not assume a bitrate option guarantees the delivered rate.
YouTube reports a frame-rate mismatch The output cadence is not the intended 60 fps or the source cadence is being converted unexpectedly. Verify the source and outgoing stream frame rates. Set conversion deliberately and inspect the actual stream.
YouTube reports keyframe or GOP issues The encoder’s actual keyframe interval differs from the intended cadence. Check the encoder’s GOP configuration and stream-health message. For 60 fps, target 120 frames per keyframe and do not exceed four seconds.
The stream has no audio The file may lack an audio stream, or the selected audio stream/encoder settings may be wrong. Inspect the input streams, confirm audio is present if required, and verify the selected audio mapping and AAC encoder configuration.
The connection is rejected or the broadcast does not appear The ingest URL or key may be wrong, stale, or copied incorrectly. Retrieve the current account-specific details from Live Control Room and keep the key private. Reset an exposed key there.

When HLS is a better fit

HLS ingestion is a separate workflow, not a substitute for changing one flag in the FLV/RTMPS command above. YouTube specifies M2TS multiplexing, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and up to 60 fps for HLS. Its guide recommends segments between one and four seconds, with a maximum duration of five seconds. Because HLS is segment-based, YouTube says it usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. Choose it only when your encoder and workflow support those packaging requirements. YouTube HLS ingestion guide

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video running as a YouTube live stream without leaving a computer at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not stream camera footage or send to other platforms.
