The quickest fix is to copy the current stream key from the correct stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and replace the key saved in OBS. While you do that, check that OBS is using the matching YouTube stream URL and the intended connection method. YouTube’s recommended first step for an encoder startup error is to get a new key and update the encoder.
What “invalid stream key” usually means
A stream key is the credential OBS uses to send your video feed to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key and the server or stream URL are separate settings: the key identifies the feed, while the URL tells OBS where to send it. A mismatch or an old saved key is therefore a practical first place to check—but YouTube’s guidance does not publish a definitive list of every cause behind this exact OBS message.
YouTube’s documented remedy when a third-party encoder reports an error as it starts is to retrieve a key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Follow these checks in order.
Fix the key and connection settings in OBS
- Open the intended stream in YouTube Studio. Go to YouTube Studio, open Go Live / Live Control Room, and select the stream you mean to broadcast. In its stream settings, copy the key shown for that stream. Do not assume the value already saved in OBS is still current. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings and encoder setup guide.
- Replace the saved key in OBS. Open OBS’s streaming connection settings and paste the copied key into the Stream Key field, replacing the old value. Avoid adding spaces or altering characters while copying.
- Verify the server or stream URL. If OBS is configured to use YouTube as its service, confirm that the selected service is YouTube. If you are using a custom server configuration, put the stream URL supplied by YouTube in the server field and the key in the separate Stream Key field. A correct key in the wrong field—or a wrong server URL—will not configure the connection correctly.
- Try starting the encoder again. Save the updated settings, then start streaming from OBS. If the key may have been reset or exposed, reset it in Live Control Room first, copy the newly generated key, and replace the value in OBS before retrying.
If you reset the key, update every encoder using it
Resetting a key gives you a new value; it does not update OBS automatically. Paste the new key into OBS before reconnecting. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. YouTube gives a compromised key as an example reason to reset one. If you do not have the required channel role, ask an owner or manager to make the change.

Check which connection method OBS is using
There are two distinct setups. In a manual encoder setup, you enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in OBS. The selected stream, current key, and server URL are the relevant settings to verify. In an account-login integration, the software signs in to YouTube and handles the connection without a manually entered key. YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team if signing in through third-party streaming software is not working; the software may need an update. Replacing a manual key is not necessarily relevant to that login-based setup. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Other checks if the message persists
Update OBS
Try the latest available OBS version as a general encoder troubleshooting step. YouTube recommends keeping encoder software current, but its documentation does not establish that a particular OBS version causes this exact invalid-key error.

Confirm channel eligibility and stream selection
Check that the channel is eligible to livestream and that OBS is set up for the stream you intend to send. YouTube’s requirements include a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. These are sensible eligibility checks, but they are not established as explanations for every invalid-key message. If you are sending both vertical and horizontal formats, YouTube says to make sure each format is sent to its corresponding key. Details are in Get started with live streaming.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you find | What to do |
|---|---|
| OBS contains a key saved from an earlier setup | Copy the current key from the intended stream in Live Control Room and replace the saved OBS value. |
| You reset the key, but OBS still has the previous value | Paste the newly generated key into OBS; resetting it in YouTube does not change the encoder’s saved setting. |
| You use a custom server configuration | Check that YouTube’s stream URL is in the server field and the key is in the separate Stream Key field. |
| You sign in to YouTube through the streaming software instead of entering a key | Use the software’s support path. YouTube says the integration may need an update; manual-key instructions may not apply. |
| The key and server appear correct, but the error remains | Update OBS, then confirm channel livestream eligibility and the selected stream. YouTube does not guarantee that resetting a key fixes every case. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs to loop uploaded videos rather than broadcast from OBS, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not live camera capture. Start the free day.
