For a YouTube Live cartoon loop in OBS, use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and a bitrate matched to the ingest codec, resolution and frame rate. For a straightforward starting point, try 720p30 or 1080p30: YouTube recommends 6 Mbps or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265, respectively, and 8 Mbps or 14 Mbps for H.264. Add the cartoon as a looping Media Source, test it with audio and motion, and monitor stream health; no encoder setting alone guarantees a continuous broadcast.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live
These figures apply to YouTube Live, not every streaming platform. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingestion and publishes different bitrate recommendations for each codec, resolution and frame rate. Use a codec supported by both your OBS encoder and the selected YouTube ingest path. The values below are YouTube recommendations, not minimum requirements or a guarantee that your computer and upload connection can sustain them. YouTube’s live encoder settings
| Output | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Choose resolution and frame rate
Start by matching the source cartoon’s resolution and cadence where practical. For material made at 24 or 30 fps, streaming at the source cadence is a sensible starting choice; YouTube supports up to 60 fps, but does not prescribe a cartoon-specific frame rate. Moving to 60 fps raises the recommended bitrate in some codec and resolution combinations, so use the corresponding row rather than carrying over a 30 fps value.
Compare 720p and 1080p on the actual artwork: fine line art or text may benefit from more pixels, while a simple animation may not need 1080p. The table gives platform bitrate guidance, not a tested quality comparison for your specific cartoon or computer.

Set rate control, keyframes and audio
- Rate control: Set CBR for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS streaming.
- Keyframe interval: Set 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds; consistent keyframes also help viewers switch quality options smoothly.
- Audio: YouTube’s advanced recommendations list AAC or MP3 and 128 Kbps for stereo, with a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Confirm the selected OBS encoder exposes and uses settings compatible with the ingest path.
- Advanced video properties: YouTube also lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit for SDR. Apply these only where OBS exposes them for the encoder you selected.
OBS’s defaults are a reasonable place to start unless there is a clear reason to change them. Keep the setup simple, then adjust settings only when testing shows a problem. OBS Studio overview
Set up the cartoon so it repeats
Loop one video file
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the cartoon file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties so playback starts again when it reaches the end.
- Use Restart playback when source becomes active if you want the file to restart when its scene or source becomes active. It is not necessary just to keep a continuously visible source looping.
- Check the beginning and end of the file for an unwanted blank frame, abrupt audio jump or pause before relying on the loop.

Loop a playlist of files
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and create or select the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist; enable shuffle only if you want the playback order randomized.
- If using 64-bit OBS, install the matching 64-bit VLC version.
OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists, playlist looping and optional shuffle. OBS media sources
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Run a representative test with the intended cartoon, audio, resolution, frame rate and bitrate. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement like the intended stream.
- Check OBS’s dropped-frame indicator and connection status. Rising dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator means the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
- Check YouTube’s stream health during the test. A speed test can help diagnose a connection, but it cannot establish that a live stream will remain stable.
- If dropped frames rise, reduce the bitrate or troubleshoot the network before attempting a longer broadcast. Recheck the stream after each change.
- Watch at least one complete loop to confirm that the file restarts as expected and that audio does not stop or jump unexpectedly.
These checks reduce avoidable problems, but neither a test nor an OBS setting guarantees 24/7 uptime. OBS guidance on dropped frames · YouTube guidance on testing and stream health

Plan for the archive separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A continuous 24-hour broadcast is therefore not a reliable way to create a complete YouTube archive. If keeping a copy matters, configure OBS to record locally and choose a recording path and storage capacity based on the actual bitrate and how long you need to retain files. There is no universal drive-size figure: the necessary space depends on the recording format, bitrate and duration, and local recording still depends on the computer, disk, power and software continuing to work. Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s getting-started requirements say the channel must be verified, must not have live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16. These are platform eligibility conditions, separate from OBS configuration. YouTube: Get started with live streaming

Set the audience designation accurately
If the stream is designated Made for Kids, YouTube disables live chat, live chat replay and Super Chat. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may still appear. This is a YouTube audience setting, not an encoder setting; make the designation based on the content and applicable YouTube guidance. YouTube: Set your channel or video’s audience
Use content you have the right to stream
Looping a file in OBS does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the cartoon, music and other material in the stream, and consider how YouTube’s copyright rules apply before going live. Copyright safety checklist

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or yellow/red connection status | The network is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. | Reduce the bitrate or address the network issue, then test again while monitoring OBS and YouTube stream health. |
| The cartoon stops at the end of the file | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open the source properties and enable Loop; play through the end once to verify the restart. |
| A playlist does not load or loop | VLC may be missing, the playlist may not be configured, or the VLC installation may not match OBS’s architecture. | Install VLC, use the matching 64-bit version for 64-bit OBS, and check the VLC Video playlist and Loop Playlist setting. |
| The stream will not start | The channel may not meet YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements, or the ingest settings may not match. | Check verification and live restrictions, then verify the selected YouTube ingest path, stream key and encoder settings. |
| No complete YouTube archive appears after a day-long broadcast | YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours. | Use a local OBS recording if you need a retained copy; do not depend on the YouTube archive for a 24-hour stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
