The VPS becomes the always-on bridge between your station feed and YouTube; the exact FFmpeg input options depend on the feed’s format and how it is delivered.
Check access, rights and channel eligibility first
Confirm the feed is reachable from the VPS
Identify the station’s audio URL and determine whether it points directly to an audio stream or to a playlist or manifest. Check which audio format it supplies and whether the VPS can reach it. Those details affect FFmpeg’s input configuration, so there is no single reliable command for every station feed.
Also confirm that the VPS provider and plan permit the sustained outbound streaming your use requires. No specific provider, plan, server size or bandwidth allowance is established here; estimate the workload from your chosen output settings and verify the limits with the provider.
Confirm YouTube Live eligibility
YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. Check the channel’s current eligibility before troubleshooting the server.

Clear rights for the YouTube simulcast
Do not assume a terrestrial or web radio licence also covers a YouTube live simulcast. YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for securing the necessary rights for live content, including music rights and applicable approvals. Confirm that the station’s agreements cover the YouTube use and territories involved.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even material the station is licensed to use can be interrupted unless the rights owner has allowlisted the channel through Content ID. A Content ID match is not proof that the station has permission.

Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live event you intend to use.
- Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for that channel or event. Use the displayed endpoint rather than assuming a generic server address: the endpoint, path and port must match the current YouTube ingest details.
- Store the key as a protected server-side secret or in a restricted environment configuration. Treat it like a password; do not publish it in a script, screenshot or log excerpt.
- If the key is exposed or rejected, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the VPS configuration with the replacement key.
YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP. Its ingest documentation also describes HLS as another option, but RTMPS is the straightforward route for this FFmpeg relay workflow when the encoder and endpoint support it.
Configure FFmpeg to turn the station feed into a YouTube stream
Choose the input handling from the source
FFmpeg can read the station feed, encode or pass through media as appropriate, and publish using the RTMP protocol family, which includes RTMPS. The correct input options depend on whether the source is a direct audio URL or a playlist/manifest, how that endpoint behaves, and the audio codec and container it supplies.

An MP3 or AAC source may need remuxing or transcoding to match the output you choose. Do not assume that a feed which plays in a browser will automatically work unchanged as a YouTube encoder input. Check FFmpeg’s output and logs while testing the actual URL from the VPS.
Provide a video track as well as audio
A radio-focused stream can pair the audio with a station image or a visualizer. These are practical presentation choices, not a radio-specific YouTube requirement established here. Decide whether the visual should be static or animated, then verify that both picture and sound reach the test event.

Match output settings to YouTube’s current guide
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and gives four seconds as the maximum. Use the current encoder guide and Live Control Room display when selecting actual bitrate and other output values; recommendations can change, and the appropriate bitrate depends on the chosen format and available VPS bandwidth.
In FFmpeg, the command needs to identify the station input, any visual input, the selected audio and video handling, and the RTMPS destination built from the event’s URL and protected key. Because source formats and URL behavior vary, a copied command without those details is not a universal configuration. Test your actual command rather than treating a successful local process start as proof that YouTube is receiving a usable program.

Test the relay before relying on it
- Start with a private or unlisted test event in Live Control Room.
- Run the FFmpeg process on the VPS and inspect its logs for input, encoding and connection errors.
- Confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube receives both audio and video, then listen for continuity and check the visual presentation.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health status and messages before scheduling or switching to a public broadcast.
- For unattended operation, arrange process supervision and alerting for failures in either the source feed or the VPS network. The supervisor and restart policy are deployment choices; no particular tool or interval is prescribed here.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube: Compare the current RTMPS URL, path, port and key with Live Control Room. Confirm the endpoint supports RTMPS and that the VPS can establish the required secure connection.
- YouTube receives no usable program: Check that the source is reachable from the VPS, review FFmpeg logs and confirm the selected audio/video codecs and output settings. Verify the result in Live Control Room rather than relying only on the process running without an obvious error.
- The stream starts and then is interrupted: Check Live Control Room for copyright warnings or strikes. YouTube may interrupt third-party content, including licensed material when the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights owner.
- The stream key is rejected or may have leaked: Reset the key in YouTube Studio, replace the protected server-side value and restart the encoder with the new credential.
- The relay stops when left unattended: Check whether the station source or VPS network failed, then inspect the process supervisor and alerting you configured. A foreground encoder command is useful for a test, but continuous unattended operation needs an operational plan for detecting and responding to failures.
