First copy the current key from YouTube Studio into your encoder. If that fails—or you want to invalidate the old key—reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the saved key in your encoder.
What the stream key does—and what the password change tells you
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key identifies where your encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. The key and your Google Account password are separate credentials: YouTube’s help material explains how to reset and replace a stream key, but does not say changing your Google password automatically invalidates it. The timing may be relevant, but it does not prove the password change caused the problem.
Update the stream key in YouTube Studio and your encoder
- Confirm you are signed in to the Google Account and YouTube channel you intend to stream from.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open Stream in Live Control Room.
- Find the stream key and copy its current value. You can use the existing key if it is still the one your encoder should use.
- Open the encoder’s stream settings and paste the value into its stream-key field. Save or apply the settings, then try connecting again.
- Check the encoder’s server or stream URL as well as the key. They are separate fields; a correct key paired with the wrong server URL can still prevent the connection.
Keep the key private. Since it functions like a password for your stream, do not publish it, send it in a public chat, or include it in a screenshot.
Reset the key if the current one still fails
If the current key does not work, or you want to invalidate the previous one, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the newly generated key. YouTube says a channel owner or manager must reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have that permission.

- In YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go Live > Stream.
- Find the stream key and select Reset next to the hidden key.
- Copy the newly generated key and replace the saved value in your encoder’s stream-key field.
- Save the encoder settings and attempt to start the stream again.
Resetting makes the previous key the wrong value for the encoder. Update every encoder configuration that should use the new key before trying again.
If your streaming software signs in to YouTube directly
Some applications connect through YouTube account sign-in instead of asking you to enter a stream key. If that is how your software is configured, resetting a key may not address the problem. YouTube advises contacting the software provider; the application may need an update to work with YouTube Live.

If the key is correct but the channel still will not go live
- Check channel eligibility: YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Update the encoder: YouTube recommends using the latest version of your streaming software.
- Check encoder health and your outbound connection: Confirm the encoder is sending a signal and that your internet connection can send it to YouTube.
- Recheck the destination and key together: Confirm the selected channel, stream URL/server, and key all belong to the intended stream setup.
