What Bitrate Is Good for YouTube Live on a 20 Mbps Connection?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your connection delivers a steady 20 Mbps upload, a practical starting point for a reliable YouTube gaming stream is 1080p30 at 10–12 Mbps. That is a cautious setting with room for upload variation, not a separate YouTube recommendation. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Confirm that your 20 Mbps figure is upload speed, then test your actual stream before relying on it.

First, make sure 20 Mbps is your upload speed

Download speed does not tell you how much video you can send to YouTube. Check upload throughput on the same network and, ideally, at the time and location you plan to stream. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate and rehearsing with the audio and movement your real stream will contain. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; it does not guarantee the connection will stay steady throughout a broadcast.

For games with frequent movement, test a representative session rather than a static screen. While streaming, watch YouTube’s stream-health messages for signs of delivery problems. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec

YouTube’s recommendations below are for live-stream ingest—the video your encoder sends to YouTube. They are not upload-video recommendations. The table shows YouTube’s recommended video bitrates and the nominal upload capacity left from a steady 20 Mbps connection after sending that bitrate. The remaining capacity is simple subtraction, not a guarantee of usable headroom: network conditions can vary.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 recommendation H.264 recommendation Nominal remainder on 20 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps 10 Mbps (AV1/H.265); 6 Mbps (H.264)
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps 8 Mbps (AV1/H.265); 3 Mbps (H.264)
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps 14 Mbps (AV1/H.265); 12 Mbps (H.264)
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps 14 Mbps (AV1/H.265); 12 Mbps (H.264)
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps 5 Mbps (AV1/H.265); H.264 recommendation exceeds 20 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps Both recommendations exceed 20 Mbps

YouTube also lists minimums of 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, and 4 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively at 1080p60. A minimum is not the same as the recommended target; do not treat it as a promise of good image quality.

Best starting point for a typical gaming stream

For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommendation leaves about 6 Mbps of nominal capacity on a steady 20 Mbps upload. If the connection fluctuates or you want more room for other network activity, start lower—around 10–12 Mbps—and check the result in a rehearsal. With AV1 or H.265, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30.

When 1080p60 is worth trying

At 1080p60, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264, leaving only about 3 Mbps nominally on a 20 Mbps line. That can make the H.264 recommendation less forgiving if upload speed varies. YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate. Test your encoder’s actual codec and the connection under realistic conditions before choosing 60 fps.

Why 1440p may not fit

YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1440p30 is 21 Mbps—already above a 20 Mbps upload rate. For H.264, lower the resolution or frame rate rather than trying to sustain that recommendation. At 1440p60, YouTube’s recommendations exceed 20 Mbps for both codec groups shown in its table.

Encoder settings that matter

YouTube lists RTMP or RTMPS as ingest protocols; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codecs; and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps.

  • Bitrate mode: Set the encoder to CBR and enter a video bitrate appropriate to your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  • Keyframes: Set the interval to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Audio: Use AAC or MP3; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo.
  • Protocol and codec: Use a supported RTMP/RTMPS ingest protocol and a codec your encoder and stream setup support.
  • Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps; choose 30 or 60 based on the motion you need and the bitrate your connection can sustain.

Test the stream before going live

  1. Measure upload speed. Confirm the test measures upload, not download, on the connection you will use.
  2. Set a realistic target. Choose the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. For a cautious H.264 starting point on a stable 20 Mbps upload, try 1080p30 at 10–12 Mbps.
  3. Run a representative rehearsal. Include gameplay or other movement and your normal audio. Test on the same connection and encoder settings planned for the live event.
  4. Check YouTube stream health. Watch its status and messages during the rehearsal and while live; if delivery is unstable, reduce bitrate or step down resolution or frame rate, then test again.

Troubleshooting bitrate and stability

  • YouTube reports an unstable stream: The measured speed may not be sustained, or the selected bitrate may leave too little margin. Re-test upload throughput, reduce the bitrate, or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then rehearse again.
  • Your 20 Mbps test is download-only: Run a test that reports upload speed. Do not use the download result to choose the stream bitrate.
  • H.264 at 1080p60 has little room: YouTube’s 17 Mbps recommendation leaves about 3 Mbps nominally on a 20 Mbps upload. Consider 1080p30 or a supported AV1/H.265 setup, whose recommendation is 12 Mbps at 1080p60.
  • You want H.264 at 1440p30: YouTube recommends 21 Mbps, more than the stated connection capacity. Lower resolution or frame rate.
  • The encoder is set to variable bitrate or a long keyframe interval: Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
