Can a VPS Handle a 24/7 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream?

A VPS can handle a continuous 4K60 YouTube stream only if its actual encoding performance and sustained upload capacity pass a realistic preflight.

Yes—but only if the specific VPS can encode the actual video workload and sustain the required upload rate around the clock. YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for 4K/2160p60 using AV1 or H.265, or 50 Mbps using H.264. With YouTube’s recommended 20% network headroom, plan for at least 42 Mbps or 60 Mbps of available upload capacity, respectively, before allowing for other traffic or a backup stream. These figures describe the feed and network planning; they do not establish that any particular VPS plan is capable of the job.

What a VPS must do for a continuous 4K60 stream

A VPS can run the software that sends a live feed to YouTube, but the right plan depends on how that feed is produced. YouTube specifies encoder output settings; it does not publish a universal VPS CPU or GPU requirement. A headline port speed or vCPU count alone cannot prove that a server will keep up.

Live encoding versus relaying

If the VPS encodes live camera or gameplay footage, its processor or GPU must encode the real source at the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec without falling behind. If it relays an already encoded feed or plays a prepared file, its compute workload differs, but the outbound stream still needs sufficient sustained bandwidth. These are different workloads, so test the one you actually intend to run.

Network capacity is sustained capacity

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. For the recommended 4K60 bitrates, that works out to at least 42 Mbps available for AV1/H.265 or 60 Mbps for H.264. Treat those as planning floors, not guarantees: allow additional capacity for unrelated traffic, a backup feed, and variation in the route between the VPS and YouTube. YouTube cautions that a connectivity disruption can break a stream (YouTube streaming tips).

YouTube encoder settings for 4K at 60 fps

Configure the encoder to send a stream that matches YouTube’s guidance. Its recommended bitrates and minima differ by codec; the minima are not the recommended quality targets.

Setting YouTube guidance for 4K/2160p60
AV1 or H.265/HEVC video bitrate 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum
H.264 video bitrate 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum
Available upload bandwidth At least 42 Mbps for the AV1/H.265 recommendation or 60 Mbps for H.264, applying YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; more if the connection carries other traffic or a backup
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS
Frame rate Up to 60 fps
Bitrate mode CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

These are YouTube’s ingestion and encoder settings, not a server specification or a promise of successful delivery from a particular host. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.

How to judge a VPS plan before relying on it

Assess the exact plan, location, software, source, and provider terms you intend to use. If comparing plans, compare the same workload on each rather than inferring performance from advertised maximums.

  • Outbound bandwidth and egress: Confirm sustained upload capacity, any traffic quota or throttling policy, and whether the route to YouTube remains stable. A large port-speed figure does not by itself establish sustained throughput.
  • Encoding performance: Run your actual source through your intended encoder settings. Observe encoder load, missed or delayed frames, and any signs of throttling over a sustained run. YouTube does not state a universal CPU or GPU threshold for VPS encoding.
  • Recovery and maintenance: Check provider reboot and maintenance behavior, then test what happens after a dropped connection, encoder crash, or server restart. A process that starts successfully once is not proof of continuous operation.
  • Recording and storage: Decide whether you need a local recording, and verify that the chosen workflow can keep one and has enough storage. A YouTube archive is not a substitute for a recording you control.
  • Total cost: Include the VPS plan, any egress charges, storage, and the time or services needed to monitor and recover the stream. No single price or plan can be recommended without the provider and workload details.

Run a sustained preflight before going 24/7

  1. Set up the YouTube live stream and encoder. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy its stream key into your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to the channel. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it, and set the codec, bitrate, CBR mode, frame rate, and keyframes to match the guidance above.
  2. Test the real source on the chosen VPS. Encode the actual gameplay, camera, or other source at 4K60 using the settings you intend to keep. Confirm the encoder sustains the frame rate without falling behind, then check the provider’s actual sustained outbound rate at the target bitrate plus headroom.
  3. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Verify that the picture, frame rate, and audio are correct and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming feed before making the stream public. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream and testing the setup rather than treating initial connection as proof of reliability (streaming tips; encoder setup).
  4. Test failure and recovery. Safely simulate a connection interruption or stop and restart the encoder during a test. Confirm how the software reconnects, whether YouTube resumes receiving the stream, and whether the VPS or service restarts the encoder after a process or server restart. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover; any recovery behavior beyond that depends on your encoder and hosting setup.
  5. Verify the watch page and recording. Check access from a viewer’s perspective, monitor audio and video while the test runs, and confirm that any local recording is growing and playable. If an archive matters, plan around YouTube’s long-stream limits below.

What changes when the stream runs longer than 12 hours

“24/7” is not the same as a promise of one complete YouTube replay. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If viewers need replay or you need a preserved copy, make and verify a local recording. Segmenting or restarting a broadcast may be part of an archive workflow, but test it rather than assuming it will produce a complete VOD (YouTube live stream archives; YouTube DVR guidance).

Copyright and reused content still apply

Hosting a stream on a VPS does not change YouTube’s content rules. Use footage, music, and other material you have the rights or permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for your channel. A 24/7 schedule or a technically healthy feed does not establish that content is permitted or eligible for monetization. For a continuous channel, plan the content and rights as carefully as the server setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube rather than encode a live camera or gameplay source on your own VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on.
