Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBack up your OBS Profile and Scene Collection before updating, then verify both are loaded and test the stream afterward. If OBS disconnects, check Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect and investigate the network and YouTube broadcast settings as well as OBS. A stream stopping after an update does not, by itself, show that the update caused it.
Before updating: back up both parts of your setup
OBS stores stream and output configuration separately from scenes. Exporting a Profile alone does not preserve your Scene Collection, so make a separate backup of each before updating or changing production settings.
Export the Profile
- In OBS, open Profile in the top menu.
- Choose Export and save the JSON file somewhere outside the OBS configuration folder, such as a separate backup folder.
A Profile includes stream settings—including the connected account—Video settings, and Output settings. OBS documents the export and what Profiles contain in its Profiles guide.
Back up the Scene Collection
Use the Scene Collection menu to export the collection, or otherwise keep a separate backup of it. Confirm the backup exists before proceeding. Your scenes, sources, and their arrangement are not included in the Profile export.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a stable OBS build for an unattended stream
For a production sleep sounds stream, use the latest stable OBS release rather than a beta or test build. OBS’s 2026-06-23 beta announcement recommends stable builds for production and tells beta testers to back up both their Profile and Scene Collection. That is beta-testing guidance, not evidence that ordinary stable updates routinely stop streams. See the OBS Studio 32.2 Beta announcement.
Before updating, plan when you can monitor the channel. Do not treat a restart or an update completing successfully as proof that the live stream has resumed.

After the update: verify the production setup
- Open OBS and check that the intended Profile and Scene Collection are selected.
- In Settings → Stream, verify the service and server, and confirm the intended YouTube account or stream key is still configured. Do not share the key; replace it in OBS if you rotate it in YouTube.
- In Settings → Output, check the output mode and streaming settings you used before the update. In Settings → Video, confirm the intended canvas and output resolution.
- Check that the sleep sounds media source is present, points to the right file or playlist, and is playing. Watch the OBS preview and audio meter for movement.
- Start a controlled stream test and verify the result in YouTube Studio before leaving OBS unattended. If you use a scheduled broadcast, confirm that it is the intended broadcast.
OBS’s documentation describes Profiles as holding stream, Video, and Output settings, which is why checking the selected Profile matters after an update: OBS Profiles.
Enable and size OBS automatic reconnect
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and find Automatically Reconnect. Enable it, then review the retry delay and maximum retries. The retry count and delay determine how long OBS keeps trying to reconnect; choose values that give a brief network interruption time to clear, while recognizing that retries are finite. OBS lists Automatic Reconnect among its Advanced settings in the OBS Studio Overview Guide. A community reply also recommends checking the setting and increasing retries when the connection takes longer to return: OBS forum discussion.

Reconnect is a recovery aid, not an uptime guarantee. It cannot resolve every OBS crash, persistent network failure, failed ingest server, or YouTube-side ending. If OBS has closed entirely, its reconnect setting cannot restart the application.
If the stream drops: diagnose the connection first
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point to a connection problem between the computer and the remote ingest server; the cause may be outside OBS. Work through these checks rather than assuming the update is responsible:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Check network stability and bitrate. A bitrate that the connection cannot sustain can contribute to dropped frames. Compare the configured bitrate with the stability of the upload connection, not just a speed-test peak.
- Try another ingest server. A different available server can help identify a route or server-specific connection problem.
- Check VPN, firewall, and security software. Temporarily test whether they are interfering with OBS’s connection, changing one factor at a time.
- Check the computer and encoder. Look for hardware or resource problems that coincide with the interruption.
- Contact your ISP if needed. If the connection remains unstable after local checks, ask the provider about the route or service.
Follow the detailed steps in OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide. Note the time of each interruption and whether OBS reports dropped frames, disconnects, or an application crash; those are different clues.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check YouTube’s broadcast behavior separately
OBS reconnects its encoder connection; YouTube controls whether the destination broadcast remains available to receive that connection. An OBS forum resource explains that, for a scheduled YouTube broadcast, disabling Auto-stop can allow a later reconnection after a streaming interruption. It also notes that a broadcast may eventually end after multiple hours without an incoming stream. This is YouTube-specific behavior, not a general setting for other platforms. See How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio.

For a scheduled sleep sounds stream, check the broadcast’s Auto-stop behavior in YouTube Studio and test the complete reconnect path before relying on it. Keeping the broadcast open does not make OBS reconnect by itself, and OBS retries do not force YouTube to keep a broadcast open indefinitely.
Optional startup automation: use it cautiously
OBS documents launch parameters including --startstreaming, --disable-updater (listed for Windows and macOS), and parameters for selecting a Profile and Scene Collection. These can support a planned startup workflow, but they do not monitor or repair the network, guarantee that OBS stays running, or prove that YouTube is receiving the stream. Test any launch automation with the exact Profile, Scene Collection, and broadcast you intend to use before relying on it. See the OBS Launch Parameters reference.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS is open, but YouTube shows no incoming stream | Reconnect state, stream destination, network, or ingest server | Check the OBS connection status and Advanced reconnect setting; verify the service/server and test a different ingest server if connection trouble continues. |
| The stream returns, then drops again | Unstable connection, bitrate, VPN, firewall, or security software | Work through OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps and change one variable at a time. |
| OBS shows the wrong scenes or missing sources | Wrong Scene Collection selected, or collection not restored | Select the intended collection or restore its separate backup; a Profile backup does not contain scenes. |
| OBS appears connected but the YouTube broadcast has ended | YouTube broadcast state or Auto-stop behavior | Check the scheduled broadcast in YouTube Studio and its Auto-stop setting; OBS reconnect alone cannot reopen an ended broadcast. |
| OBS has closed or crashed | Application or system failure | Reopen OBS, confirm the intended Profile and Scene Collection, and verify the broadcast receives the stream. Automatic Reconnect applies to connection recovery while OBS is running; it is not an application supervisor. |
