On Android and iPhone or iPad, choose Advanced when it appears, then select a resolution. This setting applies to your playback; it does not change the resolution sent by the creator’s encoder, and YouTube may not offer every quality on every device or stream.
Lock the quality for the live stream you’re watching
On a computer or TV
- Open the live stream’s player controls.
- Select the Settings gear, then choose Quality.
- Select the resolution you want from the available options rather than Auto.
YouTube’s TV guidance also uses Settings → Quality to choose a preferred quality. The exact controls can vary with the device and app version. A manual choice is limited to the resolutions YouTube makes available for that stream and player.
On Android or iPhone and iPad
- Tap the live player, then tap Settings.
- Tap Quality.
- If the menu offers Advanced, tap it and choose a specific resolution.
Depending on the video and app, the quality menu may instead show options such as Auto, Higher picture quality, and Data saver. Advanced is not available for every video, so a missing resolution selector does not necessarily indicate a problem with your device.
Choose between a manual resolution and YouTube’s automatic quality

YouTube says it changes video-stream quality to suit viewing conditions. Its listed factors include internet connection speed, player or screen size, source quality, and browser support. A manual selection can keep the player from simply following Auto, but it cannot make an unsupported or unavailable rendition appear.

Set a mobile default for Wi-Fi and mobile data
YouTube’s mobile app provides quality preferences for Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Open the app’s settings and look for the video quality preferences; labels and menu placement can vary by app version. Select the preference that suits each connection type. This is a default preference, not a guarantee that every live stream will offer a particular resolution. For an individual stream, use Settings → Quality → Advanced when available to choose a specific resolution.
If the quality keeps dropping or the resolution is missing
- Check the connection conditions. Connection speed is one factor YouTube uses for Auto. If quality fluctuates, test whether the connection is also inconsistent in other playback and check the network you are using. An Ethernet connection is an optional way to rule out variable Wi-Fi; it does not lock the resolution.
- Consider player and screen size. YouTube includes player or screen size among the factors affecting quality. The available choice may differ between a small player and a larger display.
- Check the stream’s source quality. Playback cannot exceed the quality available from that stream. A creator’s low-resolution source cannot be turned into a higher-resolution live feed by changing your player setting.
- Check browser and device support. YouTube identifies browser support and device format support as factors. Try a supported browser or another device if expected options are missing, but understand that the stream itself may still be the limiting factor.
- Distinguish Auto from a manual selection. Reopen Quality and check whether the player is on Auto or the resolution you selected. If that resolution is no longer offered, the current stream or playback environment may not support it.
Creators: encoder resolution is a separate setting
If you are broadcasting rather than watching, changing Quality in your player only changes your own playback. It does not fix the resolution being ingested from your encoder or force all viewers to receive one identical quality. YouTube transcodes live streams into renditions for different devices and networks.

Use automatic detection or set a manual stream resolution
YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. For manual ingestion settings, use a custom stream key in YouTube Live Control Room and select the manual stream-resolution setting. The exact configuration depends on your encoder and stream setup; this creator-side control is not the viewer-side way to lock playback.
Recommended ingestion bitrates are not viewer speed requirements
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these recommended bitrates by codec and stream format. They are recommendations for the creator’s incoming stream, not a promise of the quality a viewer will receive or a minimum internet speed for watching.

These figures describe encoder ingestion recommendations from YouTube’s live encoder guidance, not the viewer’s required connection speed. YouTube can create different playback renditions, and a viewer’s available quality still depends on the stream and playback conditions.
Do not confuse live quality with 1080p Premium
YouTube Premium’s 1080p Premium is an enhanced-bitrate option for eligible uploaded videos; it is not available for live streams. It will not lock a live stream’s playback resolution.
