To keep a 24/7 YouTube study stream running after a reboot, you must handle three separate things: loop the media, restart the encoder when the computer boots, and make sure YouTube will accept the encoder’s connection to the broadcast. OBS can loop a file or playlist and can reconnect after a connection drop, but those settings do not, by themselves, relaunch OBS after a reboot or establish that playback will resume at the exact item and timestamp it reached before shutdown. Plan to test that behavior on your own setup.
What has to happen after a reboot
A reboot closes the encoder and interrupts its connection. For the stream to return, the replacement process must start, find the media, and connect to a YouTube broadcast that is still able to continue. Treat these as distinct jobs:
- Media playback: configure one video or a playlist to loop.
- Encoder startup: arrange for OBS or another encoder process to launch after the machine boots.
- YouTube broadcast lifecycle: check that the broadcast is scheduled or otherwise available for reconnection. A restarted encoder cannot override a broadcast that YouTube has ended.
OBS’s automatic reconnect setting addresses a dropped connection while OBS is running; it is not boot-time startup automation. The cited OBS documentation does not establish that a playlist’s exact position persists across a reboot.
Set up a looping study stream in OBS
Loop a single video
- Open OBS and select the scene that should carry the study stream.
- In Sources, add a Media Source and choose the recording you want to play.
- Enable Loop in the source properties, then confirm the video plays through and starts again when it reaches the end.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the Loop option for replaying a single file. It does not describe Loop as a way to preserve the playback position after a reboot. OBS Media Sources

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Loop several videos as a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; on 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the study recordings to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled if the full list should repeat. Shuffle is documented as off by default; check its setting if playback order matters.
- Keep the source visible, or review its visibility behavior. OBS documents that playback can continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible, depending on its configuration.
Keep the media files at stable paths that will still be available after startup. OBS documents the playlist, loop, shuffle, VLC requirement, and visibility behavior in its Media Sources guide.
Configure reconnect and startup separately
Enable OBS automatic reconnect for connection drops
OBS identifies automatic reconnect as a configurable advanced option. Use it for transient network or ingest interruptions while the application remains open. It does not start OBS after the computer reboots, and it does not guarantee that a YouTube broadcast can still be continued. See the OBS Overview Guide.

Arrange for the encoder to launch after boot
Configure your operating system to start the encoder after reboot, then verify the behavior while logged out or in the same unattended conditions you expect to use. The cited OBS documentation does not provide a complete, universal desktop startup recipe, so the exact steps depend on your operating system and how OBS is installed.
For a headless Linux setup using FFmpeg rather than desktop OBS, a third-party project documents running FFmpeg under systemd and resuming a nonterminal event after a host reboot. That is an implementation pattern for that project, not a generic OBS configuration or a guarantee that every playlist resumes at its prior cursor. See the project reference.

Check YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle
Before relying on unattended recovery, review the current stream and broadcast controls in YouTube Studio, including scheduling and auto-start or auto-stop behavior. An older OBS community guide explains that auto-stop can prevent reconnecting later to continue the same broadcast; if the broadcast has ended, a new one may need to be scheduled. Because platform controls can change, verify the options shown for your channel rather than assuming an encoder restart will revive an ended event. The community resource is available at OBS’s YouTube stream-key guide.
YouTube’s HLS setup requirements concern streams sent using HLS, including its playlist and segment constraints. They do not restore local OBS playlist state after a reboot. Most OBS users should use OBS’s YouTube service integration or the stream settings for their chosen protocol, following the current Live Control Room setup. Consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation if you specifically use HLS.

Test a reboot before leaving the stream unattended
- Start with a scheduled or unlisted test broadcast and confirm the playlist is playing in the intended order.
- Reboot the computer under the conditions you expect in normal use. Confirm that the operating system starts the encoder and that it can still access the media files.
- Watch the OBS preview and YouTube output. Note whether playback starts at the beginning, resumes at its former position, or behaves another way.
- Check whether the encoder reconnects to the existing broadcast or whether YouTube requires a new broadcast. Record what your channel’s lifecycle settings allow.
- Repeat the test after any change to startup, playlist, scene visibility, or YouTube broadcast settings.
Neither the cited OBS material nor the other references establish a universal outcome for playlist cursor persistence or broadcast recovery after reboot; the test is what tells you how your particular configuration behaves.

- The encoder never opens: check the operating system’s startup configuration, user-session requirements, and whether the application can launch unattended.
- The source is missing or blank: confirm the media path is still valid after boot and that the account running the encoder can access the file.
- A VLC playlist source does not load: install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Playback pauses or stops when you change scenes: inspect the source’s visibility behavior and configure it to continue if that is what the stream requires.
- OBS is running but the stream is offline: automatic reconnect may help with a transient connection failure, but check the stream key, connection, and whether YouTube still permits the broadcast to continue.
- YouTube will not accept the restarted encoder: inspect the broadcast’s scheduled state and auto-stop behavior in YouTube Studio; you may need to schedule a new broadcast.
- The playlist starts from the beginning: looping and reconnect settings do not establish resume-position persistence. If preserving the exact position matters, verify whether your chosen encoder workflow supports it rather than assuming it does.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube study stream that stays on without keeping a home computer running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. There is no computer or home connection that has to stay on, it streams your upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
