Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can build a continuous classroom feed by connecting OBS to a YouTube live event, composing scenes from your lesson materials, and testing the stream before leaving it unattended. First confirm that your channel can go live; then set up the event, enter its stream key in OBS, and verify the actual preview. A 24/7 feed is not the same as a complete replay: YouTube says automatic archives apply to streams under 12 hours, so plan shorter lessons or keep a local recording if replay matters.
Before you set up the stream
Check YouTube live access
YouTube requires a verified channel for live streaming and says the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check access in YouTube Studio before preparing the classroom broadcast: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Choose OBS for the right job
OBS is useful when the classroom feed needs screen capture, slides, overlays, multiple scenes, or audio and video hardware. It transmits the scene you build; it does not supply a curriculum, manage a class, or create student interaction. A feed made from slides or prebuilt scenes may not require external capture equipment.
Decide whether the feed is public
When creating the YouTube event, choose public, unlisted, or private access to suit the class. A scheduled event is useful for a fixed lesson time: YouTube creates an event page that can be shared, and viewers may opt into reminders. Consider who can access an unlisted link before sharing it with students.

Create the YouTube event and connect OBS
-
Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one, then configure the event’s visibility and other available settings.
-
In the event’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not share it in a public post, screen capture, or classroom scene. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
-
In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service if it is offered and use the available account or key workflow. Otherwise choose a custom service and enter the stream URL and key from the Live Control Room. Labels can vary with OBS versions and service integrations; use the URL and key for the specific YouTube event.
-
Click Apply and OK. Do not start the actual broadcast until your scenes, sound, and privacy checks are ready.

Build scenes for an unattended classroom
Keep the scene plan simple
Create scenes in OBS for the material viewers should see, such as a welcome slide, the lesson screen or slides, and a break or intermission screen. Add only sources needed for that scene—for example, a display or window capture, an image, or a microphone input. Use clear scene names so you can identify the active lesson or break scene quickly.
Check the capture area and audio
-
Confirm the display or window capture shows only material intended for viewers. Close private messages, unrelated tabs, student records, and desktop notifications before broadcasting.
-
In OBS’s audio mixer, confirm the intended microphone or other audio source is active and that its meter responds. Listen to a test recording or private preview to catch muted, distorted, or unexpectedly doubled audio.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
If you use prerecorded lessons, music, or other looping media, make sure you have the rights to stream it. A classroom context does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material.
Choose OBS output settings you can sustain
Start conservatively at 1080p/30
For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s current encoder settings table recommends a 5 Mbps video bitrate. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain them. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

In OBS, open Settings → Output, set the output mode to Advanced if necessary, and configure the streaming encoder for H.264, CBR, and a video bitrate appropriate to your upload connection. For the recommended 1080p/30 starting point, use 5,000 Kbps for video.
-
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds in the encoder’s streaming settings. Do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
In Settings → Video, set a canvas and output resolution that match the lesson material and your hardware. Use 30 fps for a standard lecture or slide presentation unless the content needs more motion detail and the computer and connection can support it.
-
Use the audio track and sample-rate settings that match your sources, then test them in the live preview. The video-bitrate recommendation does not specify an audio bitrate; do not treat 5 Mbps as a combined audio-and-video target.
Higher resolution, frame rate, or bitrate requires more upload capacity and encoder resources. A stable lower-quality stream is more useful than a higher target that repeatedly drops frames or buffers. YouTube recommends RTMPS for supported encoder workflows. OBS is also listed among encoders that support YouTube’s HLS ingestion option, but HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP; use it only when its supported use case fits your needs. Details: YouTube encoder settings and protocols and YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Test the stream before relying on it
-
Start streaming from OBS while the YouTube event is in preview. Check the image, microphone level, and any media audio in the Live Control Room.

Test with representative classroom content: change slides, move through the screen capture, speak at normal volume, and play any media you intend to use. A static title slide alone will not reveal motion, capture, or audio problems.
-
Check YouTube’s stream health and correct warnings before the class begins. Watch playback from another device or browser, and check a mobile device if students are likely to use one.
-
Test the setup under realistic network and computer conditions. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast and checking failover. A desktop OBS setup depends on power, the computer, OBS, and the internet connection; YouTube’s guidance does not establish that an individual setup is guaranteed to stay online continuously. See YouTube live-streaming tips.
Choose latency and DVR for the classroom
Lower latency can make discussion feel more immediate, but YouTube notes that it can increase playback buffering. Choose based on whether students need near-real-time participation or whether a steadier viewing experience matters more. YouTube’s event settings also include DVR, which lets viewers pause and rewind during the stream. That can help late arrivals or students reviewing a point, but decide whether it suits the way the lesson is meant to run. Check the available event controls in YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Plan separately for continuous availability and lesson replays
A single OBS session can keep sending a feed across lesson boundaries, but YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. Do not rely on one uninterrupted 24-hour-or-longer stream to produce one complete automatic replay. For replayable lessons, schedule shorter sessions or make a separate local recording, then check that the saved file is complete. YouTube’s archive guidance is at Archive live streams.
Short scheduled lessons also give you clearer event boundaries and make it easier to associate a replay with a class. A continuous feed reduces repeated event setup, but it does not remove the need to monitor the stream or safeguard a recording you need.
Troubleshoot common classroom stream problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot connect to YouTube | Wrong event URL or key, an expired or reset key, or live access not yet available. | Recheck the event’s stream URL and key in Live Control Room, update OBS, and confirm channel eligibility. Never post the key publicly. |
| Live Control Room shows no picture | OBS is not streaming, the wrong scene is active, or the capture source is missing or hidden. | Check OBS’s streaming status and active scene; verify the capture source is enabled and visible, then inspect the preview again. |
| Viewers hear nothing or hear the wrong source | The intended source is muted, the wrong device is selected, or the signal is not reaching the OBS mixer. | Check the OBS audio mixer and source device; listen to a test preview from a second device before the lesson. |
| Playback buffers or the stream drops frames | The bitrate or output settings exceed available upload capacity or encoder resources. | Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a sustainable level, then retest with representative classroom content and check stream health. |
| The computer or internet goes offline | A desktop-based broadcast depends on local power, hardware, OBS, and connectivity. | Restore the failed component, reconnect the encoder, and verify the event preview and stream health before resuming class. Plan a backup recording if the lesson must be preserved. |
| A long stream has no complete automatic replay | YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. | Use shorter events for replays or retain a separate local recording and verify the resulting file. |
