For a YouTube Live H.264 stream, choose the bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you send to YouTube, set the encoder to CBR, and use a 2-second keyframe interval. Choose x264 if your CPU can sustain the workload; choose NVENC if you have a compatible NVIDIA GPU and want to move encoding work off the CPU. Neither encoder is a universal image-quality winner: test both with the same content and settings if quality is the deciding factor.

Recommended YouTube Live H.264 bitrate by resolution and frame rate

Use the row that matches the video resolution and frame rate actually sent to YouTube. These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, not guarantees of picture quality. YouTube lists different recommendations for other codecs, so do not apply these H.264 figures to an H.265 or AV1 stream.

Ingestion resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps
2160p30 42 Mbps
2160p60 50 Mbps

For example, a 1080p60 stream should start at 17 Mbps for H.264. If you change the stream to 1080p30, use the 1080p30 recommendation instead. Resolution and frame rate are separate choices: higher frame rates can help fast-moving gameplay look smoother, but require more encoder and upload capacity.

Settings to use for a YouTube H.264 stream

In OBS, set the video encoder to x264 or an available NVIDIA NVENC option, then configure the output for YouTube’s H.264 ingestion guidance. OBS labels can vary by version and selected output mode; the important values are the ones below.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Bitrate: the matching value in YouTube’s H.264 table above.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube recommends up to 60 fps; choose the rate your system can sustain.
  • Video codec and protocol: H.264 over RTMP or RTMPS, as supported by YouTube’s live encoder settings.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3.

These recommendations concern the live feed sent to YouTube, not the encoding settings for a video uploaded as a file. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before a broadcast because platform requirements can change.

x264 vs. NVENC: which encoder should you choose?

Factor x264 NVENC
Where encoding work happens Software encoding on the CPU. Dedicated NVIDIA GPU encoding hardware; requires a compatible NVIDIA GPU.
When it can be a good fit When the CPU has enough headroom for the chosen resolution, frame rate, scene, and preset. When reducing CPU encoding load is useful and compatible NVIDIA hardware is available.
Main performance consideration More demanding presets use more CPU for additional compression work. An unsustainable combination can cause encoding overload or skipped or distorted video. Moves encoding work away from the CPU, but GPU contention and the particular hardware generation and settings still matter.
Image-quality verdict There is no universal winner supported by the official guidance cited here. Results depend on hardware, encoder settings, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and the scene.

OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance describes moving work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component and notes that earlier hardware generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than x264 at its default veryfast preset. That is not a general ranking for every current GPU, preset, or game. OBS’s x264 guide explains the trade-off between preset speed, CPU use, and compression work; its examples are older, so use YouTube’s current bitrate table rather than historical bitrate examples.

Choose x264 when CPU headroom is available

x264 is worth trying if the CPU is not already busy with the game and other applications. Start with a preset your system can sustain, then watch OBS’s encoding status while playing a representative scene. A heavier preset may spend more CPU on compression, but it is a poor trade if the encoder falls behind or gameplay performance suffers.

Choose NVENC when a compatible NVIDIA GPU can take the encoding work

NVENC can help preserve CPU capacity for a game and other tasks. It is not a guarantee of better stream quality or zero performance impact: the GPU may already be heavily loaded, and quality and throughput depend on the specific NVENC generation and settings. Compare actual results on your system rather than assuming that every NVIDIA GPU behaves alike.

Compare image quality fairly

If you want to decide which looks better for your channel, use the same source scene, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio in both tests. Record a representative section with the motion and visual detail common in your game. A static menu is a weak test for fast camera movement, particle effects, foliage, or other complex scenes. Compare the resulting stream and check OBS and YouTube stream health; a test that overloads one encoder is also evidence about whether it is practical for your setup.

Check upload capacity and leave headroom

YouTube recommends keeping the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. The relevant figure is stable outbound upload capacity, not the download speed shown by an internet plan. Other devices sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to a stream, and connection disruptions can interrupt it.

  • Test upload capacity on the connection and at the time you expect to stream.
  • Leave the recommended 20% margin above the stream’s total bitrate, including audio.
  • Use a reliable connection; Ethernet can avoid some local wireless variability, but it cannot make an ISP connection with insufficient upload capacity faster.

If the connection cannot sustain the chosen stream bitrate with headroom, lower the target resolution or frame rate and use the matching H.264 recommendation. Raising the encoder bitrate beyond available upload capacity is likely to make the stream less reliable, not sharper in practice.

Test before going live

  1. Set the stream format: in OBS, select H.264 via x264 or NVENC, use CBR, set a 2-second keyframe interval, and enter the bitrate for your intended resolution and frame rate.
  2. Connect to YouTube: use the stream key and connection method shown in YouTube’s live control room. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  3. Run a representative test: include gameplay with typical motion and detail, plus the audio sources you plan to use. Test the same scene and settings for each encoder you are comparing.
  4. Check both sides: watch OBS for encoding overload or skipped frames, and monitor YouTube’s stream health for connection or ingestion problems.
  5. Adjust one constraint at a time: if encoding cannot keep up, try the other encoder or reduce the workload; if upload is unstable, reduce the stream target and reselect the matching bitrate row. Test again before the real broadcast.

OBS NVENC settings that need special care

OBS’s Advanced NVENC Options documentation for OBS 31.0, dated 2024-08-21, describes an “Ultra High Quality” tuning option intended for live-action with artifacts such as camera sensor noise. OBS says it is not recommended for gaming content and significantly reduces throughput. Treat it as a version-specific option, not a default or a universal recommendation for YouTube gaming streams.

Troubleshooting common stream problems

Symptom Likely constraint What to try
OBS reports encoding overload, or video is skipped or distorted The chosen encoder, preset, resolution, frame rate, or scene exceeds available processing capacity. Try NVENC if compatible NVIDIA hardware is available, or use a less demanding x264 preset. If needed, reduce resolution or frame rate, then test again.
YouTube reports an unstable or poor connection Available outbound upload capacity is insufficient or varies, possibly because the network is shared. Test upload capacity, leave 20% headroom, reduce the stream target if needed, and use a more reliable connection.
The image breaks up during fast gameplay despite a stable stream The scene is demanding to compress at the selected bitrate, or the encoder settings and content are a poor fit. Test x264 and NVENC on the same high-motion scene at the same bitrate and other settings. Confirm that the encoder is not overloaded before judging image quality.
Picture quality seems unexpectedly poor The stream may be using a bitrate row for a different resolution or frame rate, or the stream’s actual output may not match the intended settings. Confirm the resolution and frame rate sent to YouTube, then match the H.264 recommendation to that output. Check stream health during a test.
The encoder handles a menu but fails in a match The game scene has more motion or visual complexity than the test scene. Test representative gameplay rather than relying on a static screen; choose settings that remain stable in the demanding scene.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded gameplay recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is a different option from OBS encoding a live camera or active gameplay: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It is YouTube-only and does not stream live camera footage.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • Each slot uses one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; StreamNeo streams the video as uploaded, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. A monthly option is $9.99 per month.
