For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, set OBS to output 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps video bitrate for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC and AV1; the right choice depends on whether your encoder and stream path support the codec. These are targets, not guarantees: your source, encoder, computer, and upload connection all need to sustain the workload.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube 4K60
| Setting | Starting value | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 3840×2160 | OBS sends the Output (Scaled) Resolution to the stream. Set it to 4K only if the source and system can sustain it. OBS explains canvas and output resolution. |
| Frame rate | 60 fps | Use Common FPS Value in Settings → Video. OBS cautions that 60 fps can be demanding; test your system with a representative scene. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Video bitrate, H.264 | 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum | These are YouTube’s 4K/2160p 60 fps values. |
| Video bitrate, H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum | These are YouTube’s 4K/2160p 60 fps values. Confirm your encoder and ingest path support the codec. |
| Protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends its secure RTMP extension. |
| Audio for RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3; stereo 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps in YouTube’s advanced guidance | Check current compatibility guidance for your production. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | These are YouTube’s listed SDR values. |
| HDR color | HEVC, 10-bit | YouTube’s guidance excludes AV1 for HDR. Verify the complete HDR ingest requirements before configuring an HDR workflow. |
Bitrate figures above are for video. Allow additional upload capacity for audio and normal connection variation; a speed-test result alone does not establish that a connection will hold a live stream steadily. YouTube’s current guidance does not specify a universal upload-speed headroom figure.
Set up OBS for a 4K60 stream
- Set the video output: Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 and Common FPS Value to 60. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where OBS arranges sources; keep it matched to your normal game or production canvas, and use output scaling only when needed.
- Choose the encoder and codec: Open Settings → Output. If you need direct control over codec and rate control, set Output Mode to Advanced, then open the Streaming section. Choose an encoder and codec supported by your OBS installation, hardware, and YouTube ingest. Do not pick AV1 or HEVC solely for the lower recommended bitrate; support must exist across the whole stream path.
- Set rate control and keyframes: In the Streaming output settings, select CBR and enter a 2-second keyframe interval. Do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Enter the codec-specific bitrate: Use YouTube’s recommended 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1 at 4K60. The listed minimums are 14 Mbps and 10 Mbps, respectively; they are minimums, not the recommended targets.
- Set protocol and audio: In your YouTube stream setup, use RTMPS where supported. Configure audio as AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 Kbps.
- Check color settings: For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, its guidance recommends HEVC and 10-bit and says AV1 is not supported for HDR; make sure the entire production and ingest chain is configured for HDR.
- Connect OBS to YouTube: Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio, copy the stream key for that event, and enter it in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not share or publish it. Use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current interface and connection flow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Run a representative test: Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s performance with the actual game or production scene before the event. YouTube Help’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Choose between H.264, HEVC, and AV1
YouTube’s live guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. For 4K60, the recommended bitrate is 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for HEVC or AV1. That difference does not make the latter codecs an automatic choice: OBS must be able to encode the selected format, and YouTube must accept it on your stream path. For HDR, YouTube recommends HEVC at 10-bit and excludes AV1; for SDR it lists Rec. 709 at 8-bit. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance before committing to a less familiar codec.
When 4K60 is too demanding
4K60 is appropriate only when the source can deliver that detail and the encoder, computer, and connection can maintain it. OBS notes that higher frame rates can tax system resources. If the stream is unstable, a consistent lower target is better than a nominal 4K60 output that drops frames or buffers.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- If the encoder is overloaded or motion looks choppy, reduce the output resolution or try 30 fps. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers ways to respond when encoding cannot keep up.
- If the upload fluctuates or YouTube reports connection issues, lower the video bitrate and test again. Leave room for audio and connection variation rather than setting bitrate equal to the result of a speed test.
- If the source is not genuinely 4K, or the production does not benefit from 60 fps, consider 4K30 or 1080p60. The trade-off is less motion smoothness or less spatial detail, but the target may be easier for your system and connection to sustain.
There is no universal winning encoder brand or preset for every graphics card, operating system, and scene. OBS notes that hardware encoders can move work from the CPU to specialized GPU components, but support and quality vary; older encoder generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance before treating a hardware encoder as an automatic quality upgrade.
Do you need a capture card?
Only if your workflow needs one—for example, to bring an external HDMI camera or console into the computer running OBS. YouTube supports encoder workflows using external video hardware, but not every setup requires a capture card. Compatibility depends on the source output, computer interface, capture format, operating system, and whether you need passthrough. Check those details before choosing a device; a specific model cannot be recommended without knowing your setup.

Why an OBS 4K60 stream may lag
- Encoder overload: OBS cannot encode frames fast enough. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test the same scene again. OBS’s troubleshooting guide provides additional steps.
- Unstable upload: The connection cannot consistently carry the selected video bitrate plus audio. Reduce bitrate and retest under representative network conditions.
- Unsupported codec or ingest combination: The encoder selected in OBS or the YouTube ingest path may not support the chosen codec. Use a codec supported by both ends; H.264 is an option when the more efficient codec path is unavailable.
- Wrong output resolution: OBS’s canvas and output resolution are separate. Confirm Settings → Video shows the intended 3840×2160 output rather than assuming the canvas setting determines stream resolution.
- Incorrect keyframe or rate control: Check Settings → Output → Streaming for CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and the applicable codec bitrate target.
- HDR and SDR mismatch: An HDR workflow needs the corresponding supported codec and 10-bit configuration. Do not apply SDR color values to HDR without checking YouTube’s complete ingest requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded gaming video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, OBS requires a computer and connection to remain active. StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
