How to Set Video Quality for a 24/7 Recorded Class Stream on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a typical recorded class with slides and a mostly stationary instructor, start at 1080p30 and set an H.264 video bitrate of 14 Mbps. If your encoder or connection cannot sustain that reliably, step down to 720p30 at 8 Mbps. These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest video bitrates, not guaranteed upload speeds or promises about viewer playback quality; check stream health with the actual class content before relying on the settings.

First, distinguish a single live event that runs continuously from prerecorded class files played in a continuous stream. YouTube warns that a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a single 24/7 event is not a dependable way to create a complete recording. Keep your own local archive, or use a workflow designed to continuously stream prerecorded videos. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the limit.

Choose a quality your setup can sustain

Resolution is only one part of stream quality. The encoder must keep sending a stable feed at the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube recommends choosing a reliable quality based on your internet connection, and it automatically transcodes an accepted live feed into multiple output formats for viewers’ devices and network conditions. That does not remove the need for a stable feed from your encoder.

Class stream setting Starting point When to choose it
Resolution and frame rate 1080p at 30 fps Use if your encoder and upload connection maintain a stable stream and fine slide text is important.
Resolution and frame rate 720p at 30 fps Step down if 1080p is unstable or creates too much encoder or network load.
H.264 video bitrate at 30 fps 14 Mbps at 1080p; 8 Mbps at 720p Use the recommended ingest bitrate matching your selected resolution and frame rate.
H.264 video bitrate at 60 fps 17 Mbps at 1080p; 8 Mbps at 720p Consider 60 fps only when the class has meaningful motion and your system can sustain it.

The bitrate figures are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 live ingest, current as accessed on October 3, 2026; the pages do not state a publication year. They are video bitrates, not a guarantee that an internet connection with exactly that upload capacity will be reliable. Leave capacity for audio and network variation, test on the actual connection, and reduce the setting if stream health shows instability. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.

Why 30 fps is usually enough for a lecture

Slides, a talking instructor, and occasional writing generally do not need the additional motion detail of 60 fps. For a mostly static class, 30 fps can avoid unnecessary encoding and upload demand. This is practical guidance, not a YouTube rule; use 60 fps when movement is central to the lesson and your setup handles it consistently.

Configure YouTube and the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Start the live setup for the event or stream you intend to run. YouTube can automatically detect the encoder’s resolution and frame rate; this is the recommended default.
  2. Choose automatic or manual resolution detection. If you need to select resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in the Live Control Room. The setting names and availability can change, so follow the current Live Control Room interface.
  3. Set the encoder output. Enter the chosen resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate in your encoder. For the common class starting point, that means 1920×1080, 30 fps, and 14 Mbps H.264; for the fallback, 1280×720, 30 fps, and 8 Mbps H.264.
  4. Use compatible transport and encoding settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not set the interval above four seconds. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported live video codecs; check your encoder’s current support and select a compatible codec.
  5. Connect the stream key securely. Copy the key from the Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not publish or share it with learners.
  6. Test before class. Send a private or unlisted test using representative slides, instructor movement, and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream-health messages, playback on the devices learners use, and that your local recording is being saved if you need an archive.

YouTube’s requirements and recommendations are detailed in its live encoder settings guide and stream management guidance.

Set latency and DVR for learners

Latency

Choose normal latency when the class does not depend on real-time interaction. Lower latency can make buffering more likely, and its benefit is smaller when you are not responding to learners live. If questions or demonstrations require near-real-time exchange, test the latency options with the actual connection and viewer devices before class. YouTube’s latency guidance describes the trade-off.

DVR

Enable DVR if learners should be able to pause or rewind while the live stream is in progress. Confirm the behavior from a viewer account before the class; learners may need the ability to catch up without interrupting the broadcast.

Plan the archive separately from the live feed

A live event and a dependable class archive are different outputs. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 event therefore cannot be treated as a guaranteed complete recording. Keep a local recording or stream prerecorded class files through a workflow meant for continuous playback. YouTube’s archive page states the threshold and recommends keeping a local backup.

If you are running a normal finite live event, monitor it until YouTube has ended the event before stopping the encoder. In a failover setup, test that viewers actually roll over to the backup encoder rather than assuming that configuring a backup is enough. YouTube’s stream management guidance covers event handling.

Check YouTube rules for recorded class material

Use recordings and music you own or have permission to stream. A continuous stream is still subject to YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies; looping content does not make a rights issue disappear. Before scheduling a class, confirm that the recorded lesson, embedded clips, presentation images, and background music are cleared for public or unlisted streaming as applicable. Review YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and the relevant copyright notices in YouTube Studio.

Also make the broadcast useful as a class rather than merely repetitive playback: identify the lesson, provide context in the title and description, and make sure learners can tell what is currently playing. This is practical audience guidance, not a claim that any particular format guarantees monetization or policy approval.

Troubleshoot quality and continuity

  • Stream health reports instability or the video drops: Lower resolution or bitrate, first trying 720p30 at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps H.264 setting. Check upload stability and encoder load under real operating conditions rather than relying on a single speed test.
  • Slides or small text look soft: Check that the source recording itself is sharp and that the encoder is sending the intended resolution. If the connection can sustain it, use 1080p30 at the recommended 14 Mbps H.264 bitrate.
  • The encoder settings do not match the Live Control Room: Confirm whether resolution is set to automatic or manual. Manual selection requires a custom stream key and enabling manual settings under Stream Resolution.
  • Viewers report buffering: Check the source stream’s health and bitrate stability. If you selected low latency without needing live interaction, test normal latency, which can reduce the pressure for near-real-time delivery.
  • Learners cannot pause or rewind: Verify that DVR is enabled and test playback as a viewer during the live event.
  • The 24/7 event has no complete YouTube archive: This is consistent with YouTube’s warning that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording or a prerecorded-video workflow for continuity and archiving.
  • The event stops when the encoder stops: For a single live event, keep the encoder running until YouTube has stopped the event. If using failover, test the backup stream and viewer rollover in advance.

Or let it run in the cloud

For recorded classes that need continuous YouTube playback, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing at home has to stay on; your computer and home connection are not carrying the ongoing stream. StreamNeo sends your upload as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
