How to Make Video Files Smaller for a YouTube 24/7 Stream

To make a video file smaller, re-encode a copy at a lower bitrate or with a more efficient codec such as HEVC; reduce resolution or frame rate only if the resulting loss suits the footage. If you instead mean reducing bandwidth during a live broadcast, configure the live encoder for YouTube’s ingest recommendations. A smaller prerecorded file and a lower-bitrate live stream are related, but they are not the same setting.

First, identify what needs to be smaller

  • Source files on disk: Re-encode them to reduce storage use and upload time before they go into a playlist.
  • Live upload bandwidth: Set the encoder’s live resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to match the connection and YouTube ingest guidance.
  • Local recordings: Record at a lower sustained bitrate or transcode the recording afterward. Keep local copies if you need an archive.

YouTube ingests a live encoded stream and automatically transcodes it into viewer formats. Its live settings are not recipes for compressing prerecorded files. YouTube’s live encoder settings and upload encoding settings address different workflows.

Estimate how much space bitrate uses

For a rough decimal estimate, each 1 Mbps sustained for an hour produces about 0.45 GB before container overhead. The arithmetic is bitrate multiplied by duration, converted from bits to bytes. For example, 4 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio is 4.128 Mbps total, or about 1.86 GB per hour. Actual file size will vary with the container and the encoded stream.

This estimate helps you set a storage target, but it does not tell you whether a particular bitrate will look good. That depends on the footage, codec, resolution, frame rate and encoder settings.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make prerecorded source files smaller

  1. Keep the original. Make a compressed copy so you can compare results or return to the original if the new encode looks poor.
  2. Choose a compatible codec. HEVC can reduce file size compared with H.264 at similar perceived quality, but playback and ingest compatibility depend on your software and workflow. Google’s HLS ingestion documentation says HEVC generally yields 25% to 50% more data compression at the same video quality compared with H.264. That is a general codec comparison, not a guaranteed saving for any individual video.
  3. Lower bitrate gradually. Encode a representative short section, compare it with the original at normal viewing size, and reduce bitrate in small steps. Watch for blockiness, banding, smeared detail and audio problems.
  4. Adjust resolution or frame rate only when appropriate. Lower resolution removes image detail; lower frame rate can make motion less smooth. Static scenes or low-motion loops may tolerate a lower bitrate better than detailed gameplay or fast action. Check representative scenes before applying settings to a whole library.
  5. Check the finished file. Play it through, verify audio sync and inspect fast-motion scenes before replacing the original in your playlist.

Do not take a bitrate from YouTube’s live table and assume it is the ideal archival bitrate for a file. The live table governs ingest recommendations; an offline encode has a different purpose.

Set live bitrate for YouTube, not file compression

If the problem is upload bandwidth during a live stream, choose the intended resolution and frame rate, select a codec supported by the encoder and ingest path, then use YouTube’s recommended live rates as a starting point. The following are recommended live-ingest rates, not mandatory minimums or saved-file targets. YouTube’s current encoder settings page does not show a publication year.

720p30 or 720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps

Other live encoder settings

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  • Video: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, up to 60 fps, subject to your encoder and selected ingest path supporting the option.
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframes: Two-second frequency recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3; YouTube lists stereo audio at 128 kbps.

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table for the chosen resolution and frame rate. A lower live bitrate can save upload capacity, but it can also reduce image quality. Test the actual content and monitor stream health rather than assuming one setting will suit every video.

Protect a continuous stream and its archive

A 24/7 broadcast can run longer than YouTube’s automatic archive window. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need an archive, keep local recordings or plan shorter stream sessions rather than relying on one continuous stream’s automatic archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Before a long run, test representative motion and audio, check stream health, and confirm that any local recording is intact and continuing to grow. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% spare upload bandwidth; if using primary and backup streams, both rates must fit the connection. YouTube does not specify a local file-rotation schedule in the cited guidance, so choose retention and rotation based on your available storage and archive needs.

Troubleshooting file size and stream quality

The compressed file is still too large

Check the encoded bitrate and duration first: both drive file size. Try a more efficient compatible codec or lower the bitrate in measured steps. Do not expect a specific percentage reduction from changing codecs; results depend on the footage and settings.

The smaller encode looks visibly worse

Raise the bitrate, or restore resolution or frame rate if those were reduced. Compare detailed and fast-motion sections, not only a static frame. If the footage has substantial motion or fine detail, aggressive compression is more likely to be noticeable.

The live stream buffers or loses health

Compare the chosen live bitrate with stable upload capacity and leave the recommended 20% headroom. Run a speed test and realistic preflight stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Lower the live bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected rate.

The encoder does not offer HEVC or AV1

Use a codec supported by both the encoder and the selected YouTube ingest path. H.264 remains among YouTube’s listed live codecs; choose its corresponding recommended rate for the selected resolution and frame rate.

The 24/7 stream has no complete YouTube archive

Check the stream duration. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an automatic archive; retain a local recording or split the run into shorter sessions if an archive is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

For prerecorded-video 24/7 streaming to YouTube, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Files stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode them. It also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. This is for uploaded videos, not camera streaming, and it streams to YouTube only.

The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. The same features are included on every plan; only the billing length changes. Start your free StreamNeo day.
