How to Reduce CPU Usage and Stop a YouTube 24/7 Stream Dropping Frames

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First find out whether frames are being lost because OBS cannot encode or render them fast enough, or because your internet connection cannot deliver them to YouTube. Check OBS Statistics and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages before changing settings: CPU and encoding fixes will not repair an unstable upload connection.

Diagnose what is dropping frames

While streaming, open OBS’s View > Stats window and check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health and encoder messages. Match the remedy to the symptom:

  • Encoding overload or choppy local output: investigate encoder and rendering workload. OBS distinguishes performance trouble from network drops. OBS’s encoding performance guide recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load.
  • Network dropped frames or disconnections: investigate upload capacity and connection stability. OBS explains that dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
  • YouTube reports encoder problems: check the selected codec and stream settings against YouTube’s live encoder settings.

For a 24/7 stream, runtime alone does not identify the cause. The official guidance does not set a universal CPU percentage, temperature limit, or special CPU target for continuous streaming. Diagnose the live setup rather than assuming duration itself is the problem.

Reduce OBS workload without buying hardware

Lower output resolution or frame rate

In OBS, open Settings > Video and test a lower Output (Scaled) Resolution or Common FPS Value. If you are trying to sustain 60 fps and OBS cannot keep up, test 30 fps. Lower resolution and frame rate reduce the work required to produce the stream, though the trade-off is less detail or motion smoothness.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Simplify scenes

Remove or simplify elements your stream does not need, such as complex scene compositions or unnecessary sources. Make one change at a time, then check OBS Stats and the stream output. That makes it easier to tell whether the adjustment helped without sacrificing more image quality than necessary.

Use a hardware encoder if software encoding is the bottleneck

If OBS is using the x264 software encoder and encoding overload is the problem, a compatible GPU hardware encoder may shift encoding work away from the CPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance when suitable, while noting that the work moves to a specialized GPU component; NVIDIA GPUs, for example, include NVENC hardware encoding. Check that your hardware, drivers, OBS version, and chosen settings support the encoder, then test image quality and stability before relying on it for a continuous stream. Hardware encoding does not fix an upload connection that cannot sustain the stream bitrate.

Do not buy a GPU or standalone encoder until diagnostics point to an encoding bottleneck and you have checked compatibility. Settings and scene changes are useful no-cost tests; new hardware is only relevant if it addresses the specific limit you have identified. See OBS’s hardware encoding guide and YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Check YouTube-compatible stream settings

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the current bitrate row for your exact combination in YouTube’s encoder settings table; do not copy a figure for a different mode.

Test with audio and movement that resemble your actual stream, then monitor stream health. YouTube’s recommendations are settings guidance, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain them.

When the dropped frames are a network problem

Measure outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth free beyond the total stream bitrate and using a reliable connection. If upload capacity varies or falls short, lower the stream bitrate to a sustainable level or troubleshoot the connection with your ISP. OBS likewise notes that a connection unable to maintain the configured bitrate can cause dropped frames.

Hardware encoding can ease CPU load, but it cannot make an inadequate or unstable internet route deliver the configured bitrate. For that reason, check network symptoms separately from encoding overload.

Validate the setup for continuous streaming

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream quality. For a 24/7 channel, test the selected encoder and settings under representative load, check both the local output and YouTube stream health, and verify that the workflow remains stable over the operating period you need. The cited official guidance does not prescribe a universal test duration or CPU threshold for a 24/7 stream.
