Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server; Frames missed due to rendering lag and Skipped frames due to encoding lag point to work your computer is struggling to render or encode. Each needs a different fix.
Identify what “dropped frames” means in OBS
Open OBS’s Stats window while the stream is running and watch the three separate counters. OBS Project explains that network-dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A rising rendering or encoding counter indicates a local performance problem instead.
- Dropped Frames (Network): investigate upload capacity, connection stability, the configured bitrate, and the route to YouTube’s ingest server.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS is not rendering and compositing frames quickly enough. GPU workload is a common factor.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the encoder is not completing frames in time. Check encoder errors and system load.
Network drops can become severe enough to disconnect the stream. Don’t treat a choppy stream as a network problem until you have checked which counter is increasing.

Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions
A fast download result does not prove that your upload is sufficient. Test outbound bandwidth, preferably while other household or office activity is representative of what will happen during the stream. Other people, devices, backups, and a simultaneous backup stream can all use upload capacity.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube Help’s “Streaming tips” says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Account for every outgoing stream when calculating the total. If your connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate with headroom, lower the output bitrate; if needed, lower resolution or frame rate too.
Check bitrate and encoder settings
Compare your output to YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you selected. YouTube’s page recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Its recommendations are settings guidance, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain a particular stream.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
As reference points, the English US YouTube page lists H.264 recommendations of 8 Mbps for 720p60 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Locale versions and the live table may differ or be updated, so consult the table for your configuration rather than treating these figures as universal thresholds.
If your available upload cannot support the chosen output, lower the bitrate first and reduce resolution or frame rate if necessary. YouTube’s error guidance recommends lowering resolution when bandwidth cannot support the selected resolution’s bitrate. The trade-off is a less detailed or less smooth picture.

Try dynamic bitrate only as a workaround
OBS can adjust bitrate downward when the connection is congested. This may help avoid drops during temporary congestion, but quality falls as the bitrate changes, and it does not repair an unstable connection or inadequate upload capacity. Treat it as a fallback, not a substitute for diagnosing the link.
Investigate interference and the network path
If the bitrate is appropriate and upload capacity is sufficient but network drops continue, follow OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide. VPNs and security software can interfere with streaming connections. Test possible causes one at a time and only where safe; a particular VPN, firewall, IP-family, or other advanced setting is not a guaranteed fix. If OBS’s steps do not resolve the issue, OBS advises contacting your ISP.

Fix rendering or encoding lag
Confirm the local output is affected
When either local-performance counter rises, check whether the OBS preview or a local recording is also choppy. YouTube recommends inspecting encoder errors and CPU load and checking the local archive. If the recorded output is already degraded, changing your upload bitrate is unlikely to address the underlying rendering or encoding bottleneck.
Reduce system workload methodically
OBS has to composite and render scenes, and the GPU may also help with encoding. A demanding game or application can leave OBS short of resources. Try these changes one at a time while watching the relevant Stats counter:

- Lower demanding game graphics settings or the game’s frame rate to free GPU capacity.
- Close applications only when you know they are using substantial GPU or CPU resources.
- Reduce output demands, such as resolution or frame rate, if the system still cannot keep up.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator as a diagnostic step for some GPU-overload cases. It is not a universal fix.
Do not start by buying new hardware. First establish that rendering or encoding lag is the actual problem, then test workload and configuration changes. OBS’s encoding performance guide covers performance troubleshooting.
Verify the fix before the next stream
- Use a representative test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream; a static screen may not expose the same workload.
- Check the preview and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health during it.
- Watch the same OBS counters that identified the fault. Change one relevant setting at a time so you can tell whether network drops, rendering lag, or encoding lag improved.
- Repeat the test under realistic network and system load before relying on the setup for an important broadcast.
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | First useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) rises | Upload capacity, bitrate, network stability, or interference | Test upload, include other streams and shared use, and compare bitrate with YouTube’s current table. |
| Frames missed due to rendering lag rises | Scene rendering or GPU workload | Check game load and whether the preview or recording is choppy; reduce graphics or frame rate. |
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag rises | Encoder workload or system resources | Review encoder errors, CPU load, and the local recording; reduce workload or output demands. |
| Download speed looks high, but network drops continue | Upload capacity or shared connection use | Measure outbound bandwidth during realistic conditions; download speed alone is not the relevant test. |
