To create a seamless loop for YouTube Live, edit the video and audio so the end connects naturally to the beginning, then add the exported file to an OBS Studio Media Source and enable Loop. The Loop setting repeats playback; it does not hide a visible jump, flash, silence, or audio click in the edit.
1. Make the loop seamless in your editor
Choose an ending that can flow back into the opening. Check the picture and sound at the exact end-to-start boundary: movement, framing, brightness, audio level, timing, and any background ambience should not call attention to the restart. For music or continuous ambience, listen for a sudden change in level or a click.
Export the finished video, then review the exported file across the boundary. Do not rely only on the editing timeline: the encoded file and its frame timing are what the encoder will play. If you still notice a jump or click, adjust the edit and export again before going live.
2. Loop the file in OBS Studio
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene you want to stream.
- In the Sources dock, add a Media Source.
- Select the exported local video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Apply the changes and preview playback. Watch and listen through at least one restart to check the actual end-to-start transition.
OBS documents Media Source support for formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. For a sequence of files rather than one repeating video, use a VLC Video source and enable its Loop Playlist option; VLC must be installed. These playback settings repeat files or a playlist, but do not edit their seams. OBS Media Sources documentation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest where available. YouTube requires a verified channel, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Eligibility and access can depend on the channel’s status. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
4. Choose encoder settings that fit your stream
Use a resolution and frame rate appropriate for the source, then set the encoder to match. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Its H.264 bitrate examples are:
| Output format | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of image quality. Your video’s detail, motion, encoder, and connection all matter. Consult YouTube’s official settings for other resolutions or codecs rather than extrapolating from the examples above. YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Your available upload bandwidth must support the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom, because using nearly all available upload capacity can make the stream unstable. YouTube: Live streaming tips.
5. Test the stream before relying on it
- Start a test stream and use audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before making the event public or sharing it. Confirm that both audio and video are present and that the loop transition looks and sounds right.
- Check the channel’s watch page and, if relevant, a mobile device to confirm viewers can reach the stream.
- Monitor stream health and audio/video quality while it is live. A clean local loop does not prove that the internet connection or YouTube ingest is healthy.
- If you need an archive, record a local backup and confirm that the recording is being written. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube: Archive live streams and YouTube: DVR on live streams.
Common problems and fixes
- The video visibly jumps at the restart: the source is looping, but the edit is not seamless. Rework the ending and opening, export again, and review the boundary in the exported file.
- There is a click or gap in the audio: listen at the boundary and adjust the audio edit so the ending leads cleanly into the opening. Recheck the new export, not just the timeline.
- OBS does not repeat the file: open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source and confirm VLC is installed.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. Confirm the stream URL and key belong to the selected event and have been entered correctly.
- The preview is unstable or the stream drops: check stream health, reduce bitrate or output demands if needed, and preserve upload headroom. A network disruption can break the connection.
- The live page or archive is missing: verify the event’s visibility and watch page. For long streams, do not assume YouTube will capture an archive beyond 12 hours; keep a local recording if the footage matters.
