You don’t upload one giant video to YouTube as a 24/7 broadcast. A regular upload is a finished video; a continuous broadcast is a live feed sent through an encoder. To keep prerecorded footage live, create a YouTube stream, connect an encoder or playout service, and feed it your video or playlist. If you only want to publish a regular video, YouTube’s current limit is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less.
Choose the right workflow
| What you want | Use this workflow | Key limit or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Publish a finished video viewers can watch on demand | Upload it through YouTube Studio | Maximum 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Accounts are limited to 15-minute videos by default; verification allows longer uploads. YouTube advises an up-to-date browser for files larger than 20 GB. YouTube Help: upload videos |
| Keep prerecorded footage broadcasting as a live stream | Send a live feed from an encoder or hosted playout service to YouTube Live | The regular-upload file-size cap is not the stated limit for an encoder-fed live broadcast. You still need an encoder or playout system to deliver the feed. YouTube Help: live encoder settings |
YouTube’s encoder documentation explains how to connect a live feed, but does not prescribe one official way to loop local prerecorded files. Choose an encoder or playout setup that supports your intended playback schedule, then test it before relying on it for continuous broadcasting.
Prepare a regular upload if you mean a standard YouTube video
Check the limits and account status
YouTube’s current guidance sets the maximum at 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Accounts can upload videos up to 15 minutes by default; verify the account to upload longer videos. If a file exceeds 256 GB, YouTube recommends compressing it and identifies H.264 as one way to reduce file size while maintaining quality. YouTube Help: upload limits
Upload and resume an interrupted transfer
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Upload videos, then select the finished video file.
- Allow for upload time: file size, format, connection bandwidth, network traffic, and video quality all affect how long it takes. YouTube notes that a 4K file takes longer than a 1080p file.
- If the upload is interrupted, return to youtube.com/upload within 24 hours and select the same file to continue where it left off. This resumes a regular upload; it does not restart a live broadcast.
- If an account that previously uploaded long videos can no longer do so, check for copyright claims or strikes. If you verified the account only after a failed long-video attempt, YouTube says you must upload the video again.
Set up an encoder-fed 24/7 live stream
1. Make sure YouTube Live is available
Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live. If this is the first time enabling live streaming on the channel, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Complete setup before the day you want to broadcast. YouTube Help: get started with live streaming

2. Create the stream and connect the encoder
- In Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and choose the relevant stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the matching fields in your encoder. YouTube supports software encoders running on a computer and standalone hardware encoders; dedicated hardware is optional.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio before sending another feed.
- Start the encoder’s feed. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room; select Go live if the stream is not configured to start automatically.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its guidance also lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube transcodes the incoming live feed into different output formats for viewers. YouTube Help: live encoder settings
3. Match output settings to your connection
Use the following as starting points, not promises of uninterrupted service. YouTube’s recommended video bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec; consult its complete table for your intended output. For H.264, the cited recommendations are 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart.

- Choose an output resolution and frame rate your encoder and upstream connection can sustain steadily.
- Set the video codec and bitrate in line with YouTube’s settings guidance; configure audio using a supported codec.
- Run a connection speed test, test the stream before going live, and monitor stream health during the broadcast.
There is no universal connection speed or redundancy plan established for every 24/7 setup. Your usable upstream capacity depends on your chosen output settings and the stability of your connection, so a settings recommendation is not an uptime guarantee.
4. Feed prerecorded video and confirm playback
Choose an encoder or playout system that can play the recording or playlist you intend to broadcast. Confirm that it can continue playback as required, and watch the YouTube preview before making the stream public. Because YouTube’s connection instructions do not specify a single looping method, verify the loop or schedule behavior in your chosen software or service rather than assuming YouTube will replay a file for you.

5. Protect the archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 broadcast, do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve the whole event. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy. YouTube Help: archive live streams
Keep the content eligible and the stream stable
- Only broadcast video and audio you have the rights to use. Copyright claims or strikes can affect the channel and, as YouTube notes, can also be relevant when a channel loses the ability to upload long videos.
- Use original or properly licensed material and follow YouTube’s monetization and reused-content rules if you plan to earn from the channel. A live format does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast someone else’s work.
- Test the full playback path—including audio, transitions, and the intended loop—before announcing a continuous stream.
- Monitor Live Control Room stream health. If the feed fails, check the encoder’s connection, stream URL and key, and upstream stability before restarting.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A regular upload is rejected for size or duration | The file exceeds 256 GB or 12 hours, or the account is not verified for videos longer than 15 minutes | Check both limits and account verification. If the file exceeds 256 GB, compress it; YouTube names H.264 as an option for reducing file size while maintaining quality. |
| A large upload is taking a long time | Upload duration varies with file size, format, bandwidth, network traffic, and video quality | Allow more time, use an up-to-date browser for files larger than 20 GB, and resume an interrupted upload at youtube.com/upload within 24 hours using the same file. |
| The encoder feed does not appear in Live Control Room | The encoder may have the wrong stream URL or key, may not be sending, or live streaming may still be activating | Check the URL and key in both systems, confirm the encoder is sending, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-stream activation. |
| The stream health is poor or playback drops | The selected bitrate may exceed stable upstream capacity, or the connection may be unstable | Test the connection, lower output demands if needed, and monitor stream health. YouTube does not give one connection speed that guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 feed. |
| The complete 24/7 event is missing from the archive | A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube’s automatic archive | Keep a local recording when preserving the complete event matters. |
