OBS Dropped Frames on YouTube Live: Network or Encoding Issue?

Rising network drops and local rendering or encoding warnings point to different problems. Check OBS Stats first, then troubleshoot the bottleneck it identifies.

Check OBS Studio’s View → Stats window before changing settings. If Dropped Frames (Network) is rising, OBS is struggling to deliver your configured bitrate to YouTube. If Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag or an encoding-overloaded warning appears, the problem is more likely on your computer. The counters point to different bottlenecks, so the fix depends on which one is increasing.

How to tell which kind of dropped frames you have

  1. In OBS Studio, open View → Stats while streaming.
  2. Watch which indicator changes: Dropped Frames (Network), frames missed due to rendering lag, or an encoding-overloaded warning.
  3. Note when the count rises and whether a targeted change affects that same indicator. Avoid changing network and encoder settings all at once; doing so makes it harder to identify the cause.

OBS distinguishes dropped frames caused by an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain from local rendering and encoding performance problems. Viewer buffering alone does not prove OBS is dropping frames: viewers can have playback trouble even when OBS reports no drops.

OBS signal Likely bottleneck First area to investigate
Dropped Frames (Network) rises Delivery from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server Stable upload capacity, network path, and configured bitrate
Frames missed due to rendering lag rise OBS cannot render frames on time GPU workload, game settings, scenes, and sources
Encoding-overloaded warning OBS cannot encode at the selected output settings in time Encoder workload, resolution, frame rate, and competing local tasks

These are clues rather than a guarantee about the precise fault. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, says network drops mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate; OBS notes this kind of problem is typically outside the application’s control. Its encoding performance guide describes reducing local workload when rendering or encoding is overloaded.

If the network counter is rising

Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity

Check the OBS streaming bitrate against the upload capacity your connection can sustain, rather than relying on the internet plan’s advertised download speed. OBS’s connection guide suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point for troubleshooting. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: other upload use, connection variation, the route to YouTube, and your selected video settings all matter.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Lower the bitrate if your connection cannot reliably sustain it. A lower resolution or frame rate may also let you choose a lower bitrate, though it changes the picture you send. Make one adjustment at a time and watch whether Dropped Frames (Network) stops increasing.

Check the connection path

  • If you stream over Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If a cable is suspect, replacing it may be worth considering, but a cable cannot fix ISP congestion, local encoding overload, or a YouTube ingest issue.
  • Check whether another device or person is using the connection for uploads. Pause or schedule competing uploads and see whether the network counter changes.
  • Temporarily check whether a VPN or network-prioritizing software is affecting the stream. OBS lists VPNs and bundled network software among possible causes; do not assume either is responsible without comparing results.
  • If the problem continues, contact your ISP about upload stability, congestion, or routing. The issue may be beyond your control, and changing providers is not a guaranteed fix.

Use dynamic bitrate with care

OBS offers a dynamic bitrate option that can adjust bitrate when connection conditions deteriorate. The option described in OBS’s guide is marked beta there. It may help avoid some network drops, but it does not repair the underlying connection and can reduce video quality. If enabled, keep watching Stats and YouTube stream health rather than treating the setting as proof that the issue is solved.

Check that your YouTube settings suit the connection

YouTube’s official encoder settings and bitrates page gives recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For 1080p at 60 fps, the listed recommended video bitrate is 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Those are codec-specific recommendations, not a promise that your route or household connection can sustain the stream. Do not treat a difference from the recommendation as proof of why OBS’s network counter is rising.

  • YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency for RTMP/RTMPS streaming. Check that the settings in OBS and the selected streaming mode match the current YouTube guidance.
  • Choose a stream quality your connection can maintain, rather than selecting a bitrate only because it appears in a platform recommendation.
  • Before an important broadcast, test with audio and motion similar to what you plan to stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health while live.

YouTube’s settings page does not state a publication year; its listed recommendations were accessed October 3, 2026. Check the page again when configuring a future stream because platform guidance can change.

If rendering lag or encoding overload is showing

These signals point to work OBS is doing on your computer, not directly to the connection’s ability to deliver frames. Reduce local workload first, then check whether the rendering or encoding indicator improves.

  • For a game stream: cap an uncapped game frame rate and lower demanding graphics settings. The game and OBS can compete for GPU resources.
  • Reduce output demands: try a lower output resolution or frame rate. Frame rate affects both rendering and encoding load.
  • Simplify the scene: remove sources you do not need and review demanding filters and browser sources, which can add workload.
  • Change one setting at a time: monitor the Stats window after each adjustment. If the network counter is the one increasing, reducing scene complexity may not address the delivery bottleneck.

OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide, published June 12, 2021, covers local performance changes. The OBS Stats status-indicator guide was created May 8, 2020. Interface labels can change, so confirm the labels shown by your installed OBS version.

Why a speed test may not settle the question

A speed test is a snapshot and does not by itself establish that the live route to YouTube is stable at your chosen bitrate. Upload traffic elsewhere on the network, Wi-Fi instability, VPNs or network software, ISP routing or congestion, and hardware faults along the connection path can all merit investigation. Compare the OBS counter and YouTube stream health during a representative test rather than inferring the cause from a single speed-test result.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you see What to try next
Dropped Frames (Network) rises, especially at a high bitrate Lower the bitrate to a level your stable upload can support; test wired Ethernet and pause other uploads.
Network drops continue on wired Ethernet at a reduced bitrate Check VPN or network-prioritizing software, then ask your ISP about upload stability or routing.
Rendering lag rises while a game is running Cap the game’s frame rate, reduce graphics load, and simplify demanding OBS scenes or sources.
Encoding overload appears after increasing output demands Reduce output resolution or frame rate and recheck the relevant Stats indicator.
Viewers report buffering but OBS shows no drops Check YouTube stream health and consider viewer-side playback or connection conditions; buffering alone does not establish an OBS network or encoding failure.

If connection troubleshooting does not resolve a network-counter problem, OBS recommends contacting your ISP. This sequence can narrow down the likely bottleneck, but it cannot identify your exact cause without your equipment, network conditions, OBS log, and stream details.
