Best Bitrate for 24/7 YouTube Streaming on Indian Broadband

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 24/7 YouTube stream, choose a bitrate your connection can sustain continuously—not one it reaches only in a speed-test peak. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 and 8 Mbps for 720p30 H.264. Applying YouTube’s advice to leave 20% of upload bandwidth unused, plan for about 17.5 Mbps of stable upload for the first setting or 10 Mbps for the second. These are planning calculations, not India-wide broadband guarantees.

If those margins are unreliable at your streaming location, step down to 720p30 or consider AV1/H.265 if your complete encoder-to-YouTube workflow supports it. Measure upload under normal network load, run a private or unlisted test, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback before relying on a setting around the clock.

Choose a bitrate that your upload can sustain

The right bitrate depends on the stream’s resolution, frame rate and codec, as well as the stable upload bandwidth actually available to the encoder. An advertised broadband speed or a single high speed-test result does not establish that a particular stream can run reliably 24/7. YouTube notes that download speeds are often higher than upload speeds and that other network use can reduce bandwidth available to a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

As a practical starting point for H.264, use 1080p30 at 14 Mbps only when testing shows roughly 17.5 Mbps or more of stable upload available to that stream under typical conditions. If that margin is not dependable, 720p30 at 8 Mbps calls for about 10 Mbps of stable upload. The upload figures are calculations using YouTube’s recommendation to leave 20% unused: target bitrate ÷ 0.8. They are not separately published YouTube thresholds, nor measurements of Indian ISPs.

YouTube’s recommended live encoder bitrates

These are YouTube’s recommended live ingestion bitrates, not bitrate settings for uploading a prerecorded video file. YouTube lists different targets by codec, resolution and frame rate.

Live format AV1 or H.265 H.264
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p30 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

Values are YouTube’s live encoder recommendations in its live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 or AV1 and recommends RTMPS. It automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers.

Calculate the upload headroom you need

YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused. To estimate the minimum planning margin for one stream, divide its target bitrate by 0.8. This arithmetic applies YouTube’s general headroom guidance to its live bitrate recommendations; it is not an official India-specific bandwidth rule.

Stream target Approximate stable upload to plan for Calculation
1080p30 H.264, 14 Mbps 17.5 Mbps 14 ÷ 0.8
720p30 H.264, 8 Mbps 10 Mbps 8 ÷ 0.8
1080p30 AV1/H.265, 10 Mbps 12.5 Mbps 10 ÷ 0.8
720p30 AV1/H.265, 6 Mbps 7.5 Mbps 6 ÷ 0.8

These are minimum planning margins, not guarantees. Consider more headroom or a lower bitrate if other people or devices use the connection, files upload concurrently, or upload performance varies with congestion, Wi-Fi interference, jitter or packet loss. A plan advertised as 100 Mbps is not enough information by itself: check the sustained outbound upload available to the encoder, not just the headline plan speed.

Pick resolution, frame rate and codec together

1080p30 H.264

This is a reasonable default when the stream benefits from 1080p and the connection reliably offers about 17.5 Mbps of upload capacity for the stream after accounting for typical network use. If that margin is unstable, a higher-resolution setting can lead to interruptions rather than a better continuous stream.

720p30 H.264

This is the more conservative H.264 option in the common 30 fps comparison. Plan for about 10 Mbps of stable upload. A lower setting that remains healthy is preferable to a higher target the connection cannot sustain.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

AV1 or H.265

YouTube’s recommended targets are lower than its H.264 targets at the listed resolutions: 10 Mbps rather than 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps rather than 8 Mbps for 720p30. Use these figures only if the encoder and the rest of the streaming workflow support the selected codec. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance before changing configurations.

60 fps and 4K

Higher frame rates and resolutions can require more bandwidth and encoding capability. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 AV1/H.265. Do not choose 1080p60 or 4K just because a speed test briefly peaks high; the available guidance here does not establish a 4K bitrate target, and round-the-clock operation depends on sustained performance.

Test the connection and encoder before leaving a stream on

  1. Test the actual streaming location. Check outbound upload at different times, including during the network’s normal household or workplace workload. Prefer a wired connection where practical. A cable can help with a local Wi-Fi problem, but cannot fix insufficient ISP upload, upstream congestion or a power cut.
  2. Select a YouTube live target. Choose the codec, resolution and frame rate first, then compare its recommended bitrate with the stable upload available to the encoder. If the measurement is erratic, lower the bitrate or resolution rather than designing around the best observed peak.
  3. Configure the encoder. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS where supported. Consult YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance for the current supported settings.
  4. Run a realistic preflight. Test privately or as an unlisted stream with representative audio and motion. Check stream health and messages in YouTube’s Live Control Room; YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring feedback.
  5. Plan recovery for continuous operation. Decide who or what will detect a dropped stream and how it will be restored. Re-test after network, encoder or ISP changes. YouTube’s guidance covers preparation and testing but does not establish an India-specific uptime guarantee or a universal power-backup specification.

For the stream key and other live-stream configuration details, refer to YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings. Keep the stream key private and use YouTube’s controls if you need to replace it.

Common bitrate and stability problems

  • The stream repeatedly drops frames or health worsens: the available upload may be below the target or fluctuating. Check encoder upload and network use during the problem; reduce resolution or bitrate if needed.
  • A speed test looks fast, but the stream is unstable: a short test or download result may not reflect sustained outbound capacity. Measure upload at the encoder’s location and repeat under ordinary network load.
  • Performance degrades when others use the network: shared use can cut into stream bandwidth. Recheck while that use is happening, leave the recommended headroom, and choose a lower target if the margin disappears.
  • The selected bitrate is unsupported or mismatched: confirm codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current live encoder guidance. Do not use upload-video bitrate tables as substitutes for live ingestion recommendations.
  • The stream stops during a power or internet outage: a bitrate adjustment cannot restore a failed connection or powered-off encoder. Include connectivity, power and stream-recovery arrangements in the operating plan; no one bitrate setting guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 service.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo and plan details, then start the free day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 100 Mbps broadband plan guarantee a stable 1080p stream?

No. The plan’s advertised speed alone does not show sustained upload available to the encoder. Measure outbound upload under realistic network conditions.

Should I use a higher bitrate to make a 24/7 stream more reliable?

No. Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain with headroom; increasing it raises the bandwidth requirement.
