If an OBS playlist keeps returning to the first video, first confirm that you are using the VLC Video source for a playlist of local files—not a regular Media Source—and check the playlist, loop, and visibility settings. OBS documents VLC Video as the source that supports playlists. A report of resets after editing a playlist while preparing a live stream exists, but it does not establish a universal bug or a single fix.
First identify what kind of playlist is failing
These steps apply to a playlist of video files in an OBS scene. They may not apply if you mean a YouTube playlist displayed through a browser source; the settings for that setup are different.
- Media Source: OBS describes this as a source for adding supported media files to a scene. Check whether you have added a single file this way.
- VLC Video: This source supports a playlist. OBS explains: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.”
Fix a local-file playlist that will not advance
1. Confirm VLC Video is available and in use
In the active scene’s Sources list, select the source and open its properties to confirm its type and playlist. If VLC Video is missing, install VLC. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; mismatched bitness can prevent the source from appearing.
2. Verify the playlist entries and order
Check that every intended file is listed and that the entries are in the desired order. With Shuffle Playlist off, OBS plays items in list order; with it on, playback is randomized. If the sequence appears unpredictable, turn shuffle off and inspect the list order.

3. Understand what Loop Playlist does
Loop Playlist controls whether the source restarts after it runs out of media files. Enable it if playback should repeat after the final item. Looping does not control advancement from one playlist item to the next, so changing this setting alone is not a general fix for a playlist stuck on its first video.
4. Check visibility behaviour
OBS documents the VLC source default as Stop when not visible, restart when visible. Check that the source is visible in the active scene, then choose a visibility behaviour that fits how you use it when hidden. This refers to the source’s visibility in a scene, not whether the OBS application window is on screen.

If playback resets after you edit the playlist
A user on the OBS Forums reported that adding a Media Source or editing a VLC Video playlist while preparing a 24/7 YouTube Live setup reset playback to the first video. That is one user report, not proof that all OBS playlists reset after edits or that a general fix exists. When practical, finish and test playlist edits before going live.
When the settings do not solve it
Gather enough detail to distinguish a source issue from a scene or editing trigger before asking for help. OBS points users to its documentation and support channels through the OBS Help Portal.

- Record your OBS version and operating system.
- Note whether the source is Media Source, VLC Video, or a browser source.
- Describe whether playback fails at every transition or only after a playlist edit or scene change.
- Include an OBS log when seeking support, along with the steps that reproduce the problem.
