What scheduling does—and what it does not
YouTube’s scheduling feature creates a public-facing live event and watch page for a chosen time. It can place the event in subscribers’ upcoming feeds, where viewers may opt into a reminder. OBS is a separate encoder: it sends video and audio to YouTube, but the YouTube event schedule alone does not start OBS or trigger a local video source.
The official YouTube instructions cited here explain event scheduling and connecting an encoder. They do not establish a particular OBS version’s media-source, playlist, or unattended-playback controls. If you need a prerecorded video to start automatically without an operator, treat that as a separate OBS automation task and verify the method for your OBS version and setup before relying on it.
Check your channel before scheduling
- Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Live streaming must be enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day of the broadcast.
- These are the cited general encoder requirements; they do not establish that mobile live-streaming, monetization, or every other YouTube feature has identical eligibility rules.
See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and its encoder setup instructions. The cited setup guidance does not state a separate India-only requirement for scheduling or connecting OBS.

Schedule the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Open the Manage tab and select Schedule stream.
- Create a new event or reuse settings, then set the event’s details, visibility, and stream settings. Check the date, time, and time zone carefully so the event page shows the intended start time for viewers.
- Save the event. Open its Live Control Room details and locate the stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection.
YouTube explains that scheduling lets you promote the stream. The stream key is sensitive: YouTube describes it as the encoder’s “password and address.” Anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not publish or share it; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
Connect OBS and go live
- In OBS, open the stream settings and choose YouTube or a custom streaming service as appropriate for the connection method you are using.
- Enter the scheduled event’s stream URL and key in the encoder settings. Confirm you are using the credentials for the correct event, especially if the channel has multiple scheduled streams.
- Start the OBS stream early enough for YouTube to receive the encoder feed. Keep the Live Control Room open and wait for the preview to appear.
- Check that the correct video and audio are reaching the preview. When ready, select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting OBS sends the feed; selecting Go live starts the public broadcast.
- At the end, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the OBS feed. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior does not automate OBS playback.
Plan for an attended start or verify automation separately
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Use that early window to check the event’s watch page, wait for the preview, and monitor audio and video. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees that a local computer, OBS, or network will start and remain operational.

If the broadcast must begin with no one present, the workflow above is not enough on its own: the encoder has to start and provide the intended video, and the YouTube event still needs to be taken live as required. The cited YouTube pages do not verify how to configure OBS to play a local file or playlist unattended. Confirm those controls against current OBS documentation for your version, and test the full process privately or with an unlisted event before depending on it. Copyright and monetization
Scheduling and encoder setup do not grant permission to broadcast a video. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that they have the rights needed to exploit live and archived content, including music, and must follow applicable laws and regulations. Use content you are authorized to broadcast; a video being available online does not make it safe to rebroadcast. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

A scheduled event is not automatically monetized. YouTube says ads serve when the channel is monetized and monetization is enabled for the live stream; specific ad features have separate availability and exclusions. Do not assume a stream will earn revenue just because it is live or scheduled. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- No live option or encoder access: check channel verification, recent live-stream restrictions, and whether live streaming has been enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no feed: confirm OBS is running and that the stream URL and key belong to the scheduled event. If the key was exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The event page exists but is not broadcasting: scheduling creates the event; it does not start OBS. Start the encoder, wait for the Live Control Room preview, then select Go live.
- The wrong video appears or the broadcast does not start unattended: YouTube event scheduling does not establish OBS media automation. Check the OBS source and playback behavior for your version and test the entire start sequence in advance.
- Viewers cannot access the event as expected: check the event’s visibility and watch page, then confirm that the intended event—not another scheduled stream—is open in Live Control Room.
