Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a 24/7 YouTube playlist stream, start with H.264 over RTMPS, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate matched to both YouTube’s resolution guidance and your connection’s sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. There is no single India-wide bitrate: ISP performance, location, shared network traffic and time of day all matter.
Recommended OBS settings for a YouTube playlist
Use these as a conservative starting point for a standard SDR broadcast. In OBS, open Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, then configure the streaming encoder. Labels can vary by OBS version and encoder; the underlying targets are YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS recommendations.
Video encoder and bitrate
- Encoder: H.264 (AVC), using a hardware or software encoder your computer can sustain.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: choose it from the table below, then verify that your actual upload connection can sustain it with headroom.
- Preset and profile: use a stable H.264 preset and profile supported by your encoder; YouTube’s cited table does not prescribe a universal OBS preset/profile value.
YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrates are a reference point, not a reason to select the highest number. Use the resolution and frame rate your system and connection can maintain. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for playback formats, so you do not need to encode separate viewer resolutions.
| Output resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube-wide recommendations for H.264, not measurements of Indian broadband. For a mostly static or low-motion playlist, 30 fps and a lower supported resolution may be a practical starting choice, but test the actual content before leaving it unattended.

Resolution, frame rate and colour
In Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate to match your chosen target. For ordinary SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. Keep the workflow SDR unless you specifically need HDR: YouTube HDR uses a distinct HLS workflow and is outside this basic playlist setup.
Audio
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio, 128 Kbps for stereo, and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Set OBS audio output accordingly and verify that the playlist’s audio is audible and not clipping in the preview.
Stream destination and key
In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service and connect your account or enter the stream key supplied in YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share a screenshot that reveals it. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS transport where available; it encrypts the connection.

Choose a bitrate your Indian connection can sustain
Run an upload-speed test on the same connection and at the location where the stream will run. The speed-test result is only a snapshot; shared household or office traffic, ISP congestion, Wi-Fi conditions and time of day can reduce the capacity actually available to OBS. YouTube advises keeping the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom.
- Choose the resolution and frame rate you need, then take the corresponding H.264 bitrate from the table.
- Include audio in the total stream bitrate, and ensure the available upload capacity is at least 25% above that total to leave roughly 20% unused.
- Test during a busy period as well as a quiet one. If upload performance fluctuates, lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate rather than relying on a best-case result.
- Prefer a reliable wired connection for long unattended operation where available. Avoid other heavy uploads on the same network.
For example, a 10 Mbps video target plus 128 Kbps stereo audio is just over 10 Mbps total, so plan for at least about 12.7 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity to preserve 20% headroom. That is a planning calculation, not a guarantee of stability.
Configure the playlist and test before going unattended
Add the playlist media to an OBS scene in the order you want it played. A typical approach is a media source with looping enabled for one file, or a playlist-capable source/plugin for multiple files; confirm the exact source behavior in your installed OBS version. The playlist should advance and return to the beginning as intended, and any browser, overlay or audio sources should not obscure or interrupt it.

- Enable YouTube live streaming early. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Complete this before the planned broadcast; see YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Run a private or unlisted test event. Use the same playlist, audio, resolution, frame rate and network that you intend to use for the public stream.
- Check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview. Verify the image, sound, stream health and event accessibility before starting the public broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend setting up in advance and checking the preview.
- Check local recording if you rely on it. If recording locally, verify that the file exists and its size is growing. Calculate disk needs from the actual recording bitrate and intended duration; there is no universal capacity figure.
- Plan human or technical monitoring. Arrange a way to notice encoder stoppage, playback errors, network failure and low storage. A UPS may help through a brief power interruption to the PC or router, but it is an optional practical safeguard, not a YouTube or OBS requirement.
24/7 streams have archive and DVR limits
A continuous broadcast and a continuous replay archive are not the same thing. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Its archive guidance therefore does not guarantee a saved VOD for a stream that runs beyond 12 hours. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; see its live DVR guidance.
If replay or rewind matters, plan to end and restart sessions before they pass 12 hours and make a local recording as a backup. A 24-hour broadcast should not be treated as a promise of a complete 24-hour YouTube archive.
Copyright and reused playlist material
Only include material your channel is entitled to broadcast live. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; if it detects protected material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it temporarily or terminate it if the material remains. YouTube’s Terms of Service require the provider to have the necessary rights for use on Google services worldwide, including music rights.

Being able to play a video on YouTube, owning a copy, or having permission to upload it does not automatically mean you have rights to rebroadcast it continuously as a live stream. For licensed third-party content, YouTube’s copyright guidance says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist.

Dropped frames keep rising
OBS says dropped frames occur when the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Lower the bitrate or output target, stop competing uploads, test a wired connection, and try another YouTube ingest server. Check whether a VPN, firewall/security product or bundled network software is interfering. OBS documents network troubleshooting for dropped frames; the guide was dated 2024-09-30.
OBS also offers dynamic bitrate adjustment, which can lower the bitrate during congestion and reduce frame drops, at the cost of picture quality. It does not fix the underlying connection. Some advanced network controls are Windows-only, so available controls depend on your operating system.

Stream starts but YouTube shows poor health or no preview
- Confirm the stream key and destination in OBS match the active YouTube event; reset the key in YouTube Studio if you suspect it was exposed.
- Check that the selected encoder is H.264, rate control is CBR, and the keyframe interval is 2 seconds (never over 4 seconds).
- Compare the configured bitrate with the chosen resolution/frame-rate recommendation and your measured sustained upload capacity.
- Inspect YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room messages and preview; use those signals to distinguish an encoder issue from an ingest or network issue.
Playlist stops, repeats incorrectly or loses sound
- Test each media file and verify that the playlist or loop setting is enabled on the source that controls playback.
- Check whether a file path, removable drive or storage location became unavailable; keep media on storage that remains mounted for the whole session.
- Confirm the intended audio source is active and audible in OBS’s mixer, then check the YouTube preview rather than relying only on local monitoring.
The stream ends after a power or internet interruption
Check the PC, router and ISP connection first, then restart the encoder and confirm the event is live again in YouTube Studio. For extended unattended operation, monitoring matters because a local OBS setup depends on the computer and its connection continuing to work. A brief outage may also affect home power; a UPS is an optional mitigation, not a guarantee against longer failures.
