First check which OBS source is playing the videos. For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source and verify VLC is installed, matches OBS’s architecture, and has the intended playlist order, shuffle, and loop settings. Then test playback in OBS preview or a local recording before investigating YouTube Live. The documented troubleshooting is application- and protocol-based; the available official guidance does not identify an India-specific cause.
Identify which OBS source is playing the videos
OBS has two relevant source types that behave differently. VLC Video can play a playlist. Media Source is for an individual media file. Start by selecting the source in the OBS Sources panel and checking its properties; do not assume that a source called “playlist” is a VLC playlist.
- VLC Video: use this when one source should play a list of files.
- Media Source: use this when each video is a separate source. Its playback, looping, and activation behavior applies to that file, not to a shared VLC playlist.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation (January 11, 2022) describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support. It also notes that VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear, and that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Fix a VLC Video playlist that skips or plays in the wrong order
- Confirm VLC is installed and compatible. If VLC Video is unavailable, install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; in particular, pair 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- Open the VLC Video source properties. Inspect the playlist entries and their order. Check that each intended file is present and that its path points to the correct local file.
- Turn off Shuffle Playlist for sequential playback. Shuffle randomizes the playlist; it does not preserve the listed order.
- Set Loop Playlist according to the intended ending. With looping enabled, playback restarts after the list runs out. Without it, the playlist does not restart at the end.
- Check source visibility and scene changes. If the source becomes hidden or the active scene changes, note whether playback stops, restarts, or shows a blank interval. Test the source in the scene where it is meant to play.
Shuffle and loop solve different problems: use shuffle to choose random order, and loop to control what happens after the last item. If a file is omitted entirely, inspect the playlist entry and path rather than treating looping as the fix.

Test locally before changing YouTube settings
- Play the playlist in the OBS preview and note the exact file that is skipped, the order of files, and whether a scene or visibility change occurs at that moment.
- If possible, make a local recording of the same playback and inspect it. This helps distinguish a source/playback problem from an issue delivering the stream to YouTube.
- If the preview or recording already skips, continue investigating the OBS source, playlist entry, local file playback, and source visibility.
- If local playback is correct but the YouTube stream appears to skip, inspect YouTube Live stream health and identify the ingest protocol in use before changing encoder settings.
Comparing local output with the public stream is a diagnostic method, not proof of a particular cause. The precise cause cannot be identified without details such as the OBS and VLC versions, operating system, source properties, skipped-file example, local test result, and stream-health information.
Check HLS only if your stream uses HLS ingest
HLS is a separate encoder-to-YouTube delivery path; its media playlist is not the same thing as an OBS VLC Video playlist. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because HLS sends video in segments rather than continuously. Do not change HLS settings to fix a local playlist order or shuffle problem.

If you have confirmed that the stream uses HLS, compare the encoder’s output with YouTube’s documented requirements. YouTube Help specifies 1–4 second segments in TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Google’s developer guide also documents media-playlist ordering, segment naming, and accepted segment uploads:

- Google for Developers: Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS (accessed October 3, 2026; no publication date shown).
These requirements concern the encoder’s HLS delivery to YouTube. They do not control which files OBS’s local VLC Video source selects or plays.

Common symptoms and what to check

OBS documents Media Source activation behavior, but that behavior alone does not establish why a particular stream has a blank interval or skip. Use the local test and stream-health evidence to narrow the cause rather than assuming a setting, network condition, codec, or hardware fault.
