Leaving a laptop on to stream to YouTube around the clock adds electricity use, but there is no single reliable monthly cost or temperature figure for every setup. Measure the laptop’s average power draw while it is actually streaming, multiply by its hours of use and your electricity rate, and keep its vents clear. Continuous streaming can make a laptop warm or hot; that alone does not show that it is overheating or being damaged.
How much electricity does 24/7 laptop streaming use?
It depends on the laptop, the broadcast workload, connected equipment and your electricity tariff. The sources available do not establish a typical wattage for a laptop continuously encoding a YouTube stream, so a charger’s maximum rating or a figure for video playback is not a dependable substitute for measuring your setup.
For a steady average draw, calculate:
- Monthly energy (kWh) = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × hours streamed.
- Monthly electricity cost = monthly kWh × your applicable price per kWh.
A 24/7 stream running for exactly 30 days runs for 720 hours. Use the variable or marginal rate that applies to extra consumption; if your tariff changes by time of day, account for those rates rather than treating one rate as universal. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that electricity use is power multiplied by time and that kWh is the unit commonly used on electricity bills: DOE: Electricity and fuel.
Measure the stream, not an idle estimate
- Connect a plug-in electricity meter between the wall outlet and the laptop’s power supply. If you want the laptop alone, do not include other devices on the meter. If an external monitor or other equipment will remain on for the stream, measure it too—or measure it separately and add its use.
- Run the actual stream workload: same resolution and frame rate, brightness, power mode, peripherals and network conditions.
- Record energy use over a representative period, then divide by the measurement duration to estimate average power. DOE’s measurement guidance recommends measuring over time and averaging when consumption fluctuates: DOE: Estimating appliance and home electronic energy use.
- Use that average in the formula above, extending the calculation to your expected number of streaming hours and your own electricity rate.
A wall meter captures the power supply’s draw and anything else connected through it. That makes the result useful for estimating the whole measured setup, but not necessarily the laptop by itself.

Will a laptop overheat if it streams all day?
Sustained streaming can make a laptop warm or hot, especially under a demanding workload or when airflow is restricted. Dell says warmth after 10–15 minutes of continuous use can be normal and identifies streaming and blocked vents as contributors to heat: Dell Support: overheating guidance. Huawei also notes that demanding workloads and background activity can raise heat and fan noise: Huawei Support: device heating.
Those manufacturer support pages do not establish one safe temperature for every laptop, or prove that every machine is suitable for unattended 24/7 operation. No universal temperature threshold or directly applicable published wattage for continuous laptop YouTube broadcasting is established by the sources here. Check the temperature guidance and troubleshooting advice for your specific model.

Reduce heat risk and spot trouble
- Use a firm, stable surface and leave the air intakes and exhausts unobstructed. Avoid bedding, cushions and closed cabinets.
- Keep the surrounding environment within the operating guidance for the laptop.
- Monitor the machine during initial long runs. A warm case or audible fan is not by itself proof of a fault.
- Investigate repeated thermal warnings, unexpected shutdowns, persistent unusual fan behavior or performance loss. Consult the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance rather than relying on a temperature number intended for another machine.
What else affects whether a 24/7 stream stays live?
A laptop staying powered on does not guarantee a stable stream. YouTube’s computer live-streaming guide covers webcam and encoder workflows, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events while noting that expensive equipment is not necessary to get started: YouTube Help: Create a live stream via webcam.
For an encoder stream, YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, checking the preview, using a reliable network and monitoring stream quality: YouTube Help: Live streaming tips. Its encoder guidance also advises preparing ahead and checking stream integrity. These are streaming-reliability recommendations, not laptop power or thermal specifications.

Keep the stream on your laptop or move it to the cloud?
A laptop can suit a camera-based, interactive or higher-production stream that needs local control. Questions to weigh before choosing
- Power use: compare measured average wall watts under the same workload, not a generic laptop estimate.
- Cost: apply your own electricity rate and streaming schedule; compare the result with any cloud fee.
- Heat and noise: observe sustained behavior and use your laptop maker’s guidance, not a temperature anecdote from another model.
- Stream format: distinguish a prerecorded loop from a camera-based or interactive broadcast.
- Reliability: consider network stability, monitoring needs and the consequences of an interrupted stream.
