To run recorded tuition videos as a continuous YouTube Live stream from a laptop, use OBS Studio: add a local lesson as a looping media source, connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, and keep the laptop, power and internet connection running. For a sequence of lessons, use OBS’s VLC Video source as a playlist. This setup loops prerecorded video; it does not make the broadcast independent of the laptop.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel that meets YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility rules. You must be at least 16, and the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- OBS Studio installed on the laptop, plus the lesson video files stored locally or otherwise available to it. OBS documents looping for its Media Source; its VLC Video source supports playlists and requires VLC to be installed. See OBS Media Sources.
- A stable power supply and an internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream. YouTube recommends at least 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; assess upload, not download, speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Permission to broadcast the lesson and every included element, including slides, images, clips and music. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights, including music licensing rights.
Set up the YouTube Live broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. In OBS, enter them in the stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, public chat or a recording. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the workflow.
- Keep the Live Control Room available for the preview and stream status. You will use it to confirm the incoming signal before viewers rely on the broadcast.
Configure OBS to loop a lesson or playlist
Loop one recorded class
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the local lesson video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop option so playback restarts when the file ends. Check that the source is visible in the canvas and that its audio is not muted.
- If you want learners to see a lesson title or schedule, add a simple text or image element to the scene. Keep text large enough to read on a phone and make sure it does not cover important parts of the lesson.
Play several lessons in sequence
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it.
- Add a VLC Video source, create a playlist and add the lesson files in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist to restart the sequence when the last lesson finishes. Confirm the playlist order and test transitions before going live.
OBS’s documentation establishes these media-loop controls, but it does not prescribe one universal resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval or laptop specification for every file and connection. Choose output settings your laptop can sustain and your upload link can carry, then verify the actual result in a test broadcast rather than assuming one preset suits all Indian connections.
Test the stream and keep it running
- Start the encoder feed from OBS and wait for the stream preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Open the watch page as a viewer, ideally on another device, and confirm picture, audio level and synchronization. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring both audio and video; see its live-streaming tips.
- Check the laptop’s measured upload speed and leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends above the stream’s total bitrate. Other devices using the same connection can reduce available upload capacity.
- Keep OBS running, prevent the laptop from sleeping or hibernating, and ensure it remains powered and online. A power interruption, sleep, software crash or internet outage can stop this laptop-based broadcast; YouTube specifically warns that network disruption can break a stream.
Plan for replays and copyright
A 24/7 broadcast may not produce a complete replay
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Very long streams may also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. If a complete replay matters, use sessions shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Make sure every part of the lesson is cleared
Having permission to teach a subject does not automatically grant rights to every asset in a recording. Confirm you can broadcast the teaching, slides, third-party clips, images and any background music. YouTube’s terms assign responsibility for the rights needed to use live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music rights.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not show an incoming signal: confirm OBS is using the current stream URL and key for the intended broadcast, and that OBS has actually started streaming. Check the Live Control Room status before changing unrelated scene settings.
- The video stops instead of restarting: check that the Media Source’s Loop option is enabled. For a playlist, use the VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist.
- The playlist source is unavailable: install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and add the VLC Video source.
- Viewers see buffering or the stream disconnects: compare the stream’s total bitrate with measured upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the output load if the connection cannot sustain it, and check whether other devices are consuming upload bandwidth.
- The stream goes offline while unattended: check whether the laptop slept, lost power, OBS stopped, or the internet connection dropped. This method depends on the laptop and its connection remaining active.
- The archive is incomplete or missing: a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay. Keep sessions below that duration if a complete archive is important, and make a local recording backup.
- Audio or picture is wrong: inspect the OBS preview and the viewer-facing watch page, check source visibility and mute state, and run another test before relying on the stream for a class.
