To promote channel memberships in YouTube Live chat, post a brief invitation, open the message’s More menu, and select Pin. Only the creator can pin a message, and only one chat message can be pinned at a time.
How to pin your membership message
- Open a live chat. Start or open your YouTube live stream or Premiere and locate its live-chat window.
- Post a short invitation. For example: “Want member-only perks? Visit my channel and tap Join to see the membership options.” YouTube’s live-chat guidance limits messages to 200 characters and does not allow URLs in Live Chat, so keep the message concise and direct viewers to your channel rather than typing a link.
- Pin the message. Find your posted message, open its More menu, and choose Pin. The desktop instructions use the chat window; the YouTube mobile app’s live-chat flow also offers More and Pin.
- Replace or remove it when needed. Pinning another message replaces the current pinned message. To remove the pin, open the pinned message’s More menu and select Unpin.
YouTube’s instructions allow creators to pin their own message or a viewer’s message, but only the creator can pin. Moderators and viewers cannot pin messages.
What to say—and where to put the membership link
Use a clear call to action that tells viewers where to find membership details. For example: “Visit my channel and tap Join to see the membership options.” Avoid suggesting that every viewer will see the Join button: availability depends on factors including whether channel memberships are enabled, viewer location, whether the video is Made for Kids, and the page or platform the viewer is using.
YouTube recommends adding /join to the end of your channel URL to create a membership link. Its listed places to share that link include video descriptions, cards, end screens, community posts, and other social channels. Live Chat is different: YouTube says URLs are not allowed there, so use a verbal prompt in the pinned message instead.

If a viewer cannot find Join on a watch page, YouTube suggests trying the channel homepage or the channel’s /join link. The button may still be unavailable to that viewer or on that surface.
Do not confuse a pinned promotion with members-only chat
Creator-pinned promotion
This is a message you manually pin to promote memberships. It remains the chat’s pinned message until you unpin it or pin a different one.

Automatic new-member recognition
When someone joins during a stream, YouTube automatically posts a bright green new-member message and pins that member’s profile picture at the top of chat for five minutes. This automatic recognition is separate from your manually pinned promotional message.
Members-only live chat
This is a separate Studio setting that limits who can send messages in chat to channel members, even though the stream itself can remain public. You do not need to enable it to promote memberships; turning it on changes who may participate in chat.
